When you first hear C.W. Stoneking you might mistake him as a lesser known singer from the 1930s blues era. The voice, the use of instrumentation and percussion, the subject matter sung about, even the stifled mono sound rasping through the speakers sooner reminds you of Benny Goodman, than an experimental shoe-tapper from Footscray, Melbourne. And yet I hear even on stage this man has the presence of someone torn straight out of the history books. Stoneking's first album King Hokum introduced his playful sound. There was even some banter between himself [...]
C.W. Stoneking - The Love Me Or Die There were some people who got real uneasy about C.W. Stoneking's last album, King Hokum . On the one hand, it was cool to hear some lo-er than lo-fi 1923 jams with the Primitive Horn Orchestra up back being undoubtedly awesome. On the other hand, wasn't it just a little bit too Al Jolson minus the actual blackface? Not that that's my opinion. I'm not super keen to get punched in the face . Anyway, that angle kind of fell apart when he turned [...]
Some new music today from C.W. Stoneking or maybe I should say new old music. The music could just as easily be from the deep south in the 20's or 30's but it's not, it's brand new music being made in the land down under in Melbourne, Australia. Stoneking has captured with such authenticity the gritty storytelling blues style of a time now long past that you'd swear Alan Lomax was there with his field recorder capturing it. Bio: Born to American parents in Katherine, Northern Territory, in 1974, CW was raised in the [...]

Have you picked up the latest Leadbelly CD? How about Big Mama Thorton? Robert Johnson, maybe? No? That's probably because they've been dead for decades. So what's a fan of that Delta Blues sound supposed to do? Well, fret no more. C.W. Stoneking has the goods for what ails ya'. Now, you're probably thinking, how much can a Melbourne, Australia-native, raised in the Aboriginal community of Papunya, no less, know about the songs of the Mississippi Delta? Seriously, is this guy just a poser? Well, as an aficionado of the blues myself, all I can say [...]
Nothing like an Australian who plays '20s and '30s blues that brings to mind riding the rails, picking cotton and eating cold baked beans out of a tin can. That's what CW Stoneking sounds like to me. My second bite into the compilation apple was inspired by a visit to my good buddy, Delta Desmond's seaside abode. Des had recently become Dad to a little tiger named Ollie. He showed me how he likes to put on an animal song and, using a soft toy of that creature, teach Ollie all about the animal kingdom. Too cute. So this one's dedicated to Desi and all the recent parents, animal and music lovers of this world. To complete the educational smorgasboard, it's ordered alaphabetically by animal. The zip file contains all the tunes and cover artwork with a [...]
