If Florian Schneider (of Kraftwerk) sat down, closed his eyes, and attentively listened to Shout Out Out Out Out’s latest efforts in their third and flawlessly compressed LP, he would probably mistake their sound for his own.

(More here ) On the 19th of January 2012, a zillion innocent songs faced obliteration . They had been caught in the middle of a battle pitting a Mount Rushmore of severe lawyerly faces, pockmarked with threatening takedown tendrils, and the khaki lords of the cloud, bloated by the windfall of a thousand network effects. No-one cared for the songs. They had long lived miserable existences locked in the zip cells of a cybernetic prison, crammed between adverts for scantily dressed ladies and pills supposedly [...]

Been on a Detroit techno kick as of late and in the process stumbled upon a couple of great Versions -worthy covers. For those slaves to the six string who have a hard time separating the "T" word from images of pacifier chomping K-soaked rave zombies or worse, Lady Gaga, need I school you on the fact that real, pure, Motor City techno is the greatest (but most sorely overlooked) contribution to African-American music since jazz or perhaps Parliament. Arguably it's originator is today's tribute fodder, 'Magic' Juan Atkins (AKA Cybotron ), and [...]

The Dirtbombs will release an album of Detroit techno covers titled Party Store on February 1 via In the Red Records. The group takes a stab at songs from Cybotron, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig, who also contributes to the reproduction of his song, "Bug in the Bass Bin,” released under the Innerzone Orchestra moniker in 1992. Detroit is one of the originators of techno, so it's no surprise the throwback-loving Dirtbombs have shed some new light on their hometown history. We were lucky enough to sit down with the group, who hipped [...]

I recently recruited my good friend Jon Alexander to put together a mixtape for the site. His musical IQ is pretty high and I gave him free reign to pretty much do whatever he wanted. What I got back was a nice retrospective look into the world of electronic music and the experience of electronic music in Detroit. Here's what Jon had to say about the mix: When Chris asked me to curate a mixtape for Dailybeatz, there was not a moment of hesitation. I had to create an electronic and techno [...]

With electro I mean real electro. It still baffles me that people call new raving house music 'electro'. I mentioned last week that this week here at the blog will be a week dedicated to proper old school electro (booty bass included) so here we go, nothing but classic sounds in these posts. Electro meant and still does a lot to us. All hail 808's, pump that bass, the obligatory scratches and break! MP3 Cybotron - Clear (Ultimix Looking Back) (320K) (Mediafire) MP3 Warp 9 - Nunk [...]

First of all, this cover artwork is a tweak. But clearly it's recalling the Sir Mix-A-Lot era (booty, bombast and bass), right? Lazer Sword has dropped 20 high energy songs of their own, plus tracks from Machine Drum, Krystal Klear, and others for your listening pleasure. Throw this on if you're about to hit the streets and party and it will not only get you amped-but keep you there. Feels like a trip into the 80s. Even Missy Elliot sampling 'Clear' cant kill the classic cosmic groove. Everyone knows this one, unfortunately more than likely the sampled version nowadays. Big fans of Atkins and... Cybotron 's Juan Atkins and Richard Davis were pioneers of the early electro sound. These sounds are what eventually fueled the Detroit techno movement, but also laid much of the foundation for today's electro. Released on Fantasy Records in 1988, below is a rip for you from a 123 that I just picked up and it's grease in its purest form. Atkins is still crankin' today as Model 500 and Infinity. Cybotron - Cosmic Cars (Detroit Style Mix) @ 320

Aside from my enviable ability to ignore an artist's name, I'm especially feeling this track from Miss Kittin & The Hacker because about half the track is a straight up ode to Detroit techno...which pretty much sold me on taking electronic music seriously. The Vault: The classics of Electronic Music. The influential and the groundbreaking The pioneering and the music we grew up on… It’s 1986, this blogger is 11 years old. Up until this point my musical world has consisted of chart music and SynthPop (also chart music) inherited from my older brother. Then ma and my mates discovered Graffiti, Breakdancing and Electro. At the weekend we’d go down the underpass with a Hitachi boom box, a piece of old lino and a couple of spraycans for some poppin’, [...]
The New Year is here, and my holidays have been great. Let's celebrate old-school with these solid gold classics: Giorgio Moroder - The Chase New Order - Blue Monday Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue Newcleus - Jam On It Cybotron - Clear

The seminal electro group Cybotron provided the first home for the recordings of techno godfather Juan Atkins. With partner Rick Davis (aka 3070), Atkins recorded several of electro's best moments. Clearly influenced by Kraftwerk, this is a key step towards Detroit techno. Enter, Clear is a seminal techno classic. Juan Atkins and Rick "3070" Davis were two Detroit-area musicians who bonded over synth-electronics and sci-fi futurism. Davis was a Vietnam vet and a Hendrix freak. Atkins was a post-boomer generation DJ hooked on new wave and disco. In 1982, the single [...]

Who remembers simpler times, when "electro" was a brand of hip-hip infused electronic-funk (if I've lost you, think Kraftwerk meets Frankie Smith meets Melle Mel ). All that together produced a brilliant and cutting edge sound unique sound that helped define the late 1980s. Of course today's "electro" is a different animal. The nature of language is to be lazy and things get truncated—so most of what ends up on this blog tagged as "electro" is more accurately "electro house", hard "synthpop", so-called "electroclash" (a term that's always had a messy ambiguity [...]
