[Welcome to Mettā Mind Journal, the new MetalSucks column by Cynic guitarist/vocalist Paul Masvidal. Expect a new entry every Wednesday from Paul about life, art, music and the world at large. -Ed.] One question that comes up a lot during interviews is, "So, how did the band start?" Sean Reinert and I met in elementary school [...]
Actually, there is no doubt that a preview of another new Levi/Werstler track has been posted. I just wanted to see how many times in a row we could phrase a headline as a question. Sorry. ANYWAY, as I said, Levi/Werstler HAVE posted another preview of another new track, this one called "Casting The Molten Sea." [...]
Photos by Adam Haussman My bosses at MetalSucks love me for my looks, but by now Vince (pictured here) and Axl (here) know that my dazzling physical gifts are accompanied by a lot of blown deadlines and indecipherable twaddle about the band Junkyard and drugs. To compensate, I help out with dropped assignments and try to [...]

Yesterday we posted a preview of over 180 bands that we feel are worth checking out at South by Southwest. Today we focus on 25 artists that are among the best of the 2000+ participating bands at SXSW. The futures of these bands are bright, and we certainly recommend seeing them play at least once during the festival in Austin this weekend. Allo, Darlin' (Myspace) Hometown: London, England Label: WeePop, Fortuna Pop Allo, Darlin' - Dear Stephen Hawking [...]

Rollo & Grady is heading to Austin later this week. Almost 2000 bands are participating this year at South By Southwest, and deciding which shows to attend can be overwhelming. After sampling roughly 1200 bands, we selected 200 bands to check out. Many of these artists we've covered in the past, but we've also discovered several new groups that we're excited to share with you. Tomorrow we're highlighting 23 artists that we feel will generate the biggest buzz at (and after) the festival. Adam Green (Myspace) [...]
It's that time of the year Vacayers!!! That's right it's SPRING BREAK which means every guys 3 favorite B's (Beaches, Booze, and Boobies) and every girls 3 favorite D's (Dancing, Drinking, and D*CK). If you don't have any plans for this years festivities then I highly suggest getting off your ass and figuring something out. Now anybody who's ANYBODY will most likely be in beautiful Miami, Fl in the coming weeks for WMC and ULTRA 2010. I'm sure there will be those of you who are scattered all over Florida in the many party spots such as Panama City, Myrtle [...]
We're a little late on reporting this, but there's a sample of another new Levi/Werstler track, "Obsidian Fissures," now streaming on their merch page. It's maybe twenty seconds of the song, which is to say it'll pretty much give you sonic blue balls. But that's only because it's so awesome. Levi/Werstler's debut album, Avalanche of Worms, [...]
I dunno if this old news and I'm just somehow learning about it now, but: Cynic have released the cover art for their new EP, Re-Traced, and as it turns out, it will be made up predominantly of "reinterpretations" of songs from 2008's orgasm-inducing Traced in Air. Of course, this isn't a total shock - [...]
I'm not generally a fan of covers unless it's something kinda outside the box and the band puts their own spin on it, but I am a fan of Gorod and a fan of Cynic, so it's hard for me to pass harsh judgment on the French prog-metallers cover of Cynic's "Textures." It's hubris of [...]
One progressive band covering their idols? Sign me up! Gorod is obviously heavily influenced by Cynic, so they decided to pay tribute to the band by posting a cover of the track "Textures" off Cynic's Focus LP. Sounds pretty awesome! Stream it on their MySpace page. Speaking of progressive bands, PERIPHERY's album release is just around ...
I know that there are lots of reasons why the Levi/Werstler project may never get to do a live show (or, better yet, a tour, even): there's the usual considerations about the costs (financial or otherwise) of being on the road, and the Daath boys are hitting the studio in the not-too-distant future to record [...]
:: Exile on Main Street has a lot of killer stuff on it already, but UMG has decided to ratchet up the classic Rolling Stones album (or more likely, ruin it) with a reissue that will include 10 extra tracks. :: Thom Yorke keeps finding ways to underwhelm me . Thanks, Thom. :: New Cynic ? Yes, please. :: How in the world are subscription-based music sites still getting millions in VC funding ? :: Head over to MetalSucks, write [...]
Major props to the anonymous reader who just sent us a link to the below preview of Cynic's new EP, Re-Traced, which comes out May 17 on Season of Mist. It includes a snippet of the studio version of "Wheels Within Wheels," a new song that the band debuted live last month. More, please. -AR RELATED POSTS:WERSTLER WASTES [...]
If you're like me and you love watching great guitarists play because you yourself are a terrible guitarist but you just love the grace it takes to be a good guitarist, than you will enjoy this clip of Emil Werstler playing some of "Dura Mater." The song is the first taste of Avalanche of Worms, [...]
When it comes to music (and other things really), I tend to play devil's advocate. If everyone is shitting on a certain band, for some reason, I become more attracted to that band and seek them out. I don't know what it is about my personality, but I think it stems from the same perspective [...]
While we were at NAMM, Eyal Levi, guitarist of DAATH gave me and Frank a sneak peak and his upcoming instrumental album with fellow DAATH guitarist Emil Werstler, with Sean Reinert of CYNIC on drums. To say we were impressed is an understatement. The 20 or so minutes we heard were fucking incredible. (It also ...
If you're a regular reader of Eyal Levi's blogs for this very site, than you're already aware that he and his fellow Daath guitarist, Emil Werstler, have been working on a new, non-Daath record with Cynic drummer Sean Reinert. Well, hey, guess what? The album has a name now, Avalanche of Worms, and an oh-so-appropriate [...]
What's going on my metal friends! After two months I have returned to let you in on what I've been up to. Some of you may have been worried that I died of alcohol poisoning, maybe I should have three or four times, but I'm here! Luckily I could spend more on alcohol recently, since [...]

cynicism is the new irony. fuck u conan.
If you loved Daath's The Concealers as much as we did - and both Vince and myself included the album fairly highly on our 2009 year-end lists - than you'll be as excited as we are to learn that there's a buttload of activity going on in the Daath camp right now. For one thing, [...]
