The Black and Blue Bowl at Webster Hall annually features a variety of hardcore bands. Considering my hardcore roots, I thought I would know more people at the show, but the bill was mostly mid-period bands. I did see some great metal shirts throughout, which made me immediatley comfy- Behemoth, Sodom, Gorguts..and at some point I did hear some Celtic Frost over the PA. The sold out crowd surfed, dove, piled-on and stared in awe at the slew of bands presented in this 9 hour day. There were no barriers in front of the [...]

City Gardens Riot on The Dance Floor film skate deck As hard as we may try to write about new music the past keep coming up again and again like unwanted overgrown hair and reminds me just how truly awesome things were way back when the slang "that was so 10 minutes ago..." never crossed our minds because the landscape of haircuts were so diverse from band to band and scene to scene. We were constantly consuming so much great music at such a rate that personally I think you'd be a fool to stay [...]

Words by Rick Moslen Growing up, many of us believed in punk rock but never considered ourselves "punk." We moshed at shows, bought $3 Epitaph compilations, and complained about Green Day not being a real punk band, but despite a few oddly colored hair manifestations, we never looked the part. Then high school arrived and we discovered Fugazi (cue Handel's Hallelujah Chorus). Not only did they look like regular dudes, but their aesthetic was as essential as the music. My high school punk band suddenly sported Fugazi -esque principles: [...]

DOWNLOAD: Dag Nasty - "I Wouldn't Cry" (from the 10-31-85 Session) (posted on Daghouse.com) Dischord has just released Dag Nasty's first recording sessions on a new disc entitled Dag With Shawn . This disc captures the band at Inner Ear Studios on Halloween in 1985 and includes pristine versions of nine of the ten tracks that were circulating on tape in DC around 20+ years ago. From Dischord's Website : Dag With Shawn was recorded on Halloween [...]

Saturday's Kids From: South Wales, United Kingdom Sion the lead singer with old school punkers Saturday's Kids took some time out from straining his vocal chords to answer a few questions from the Devil. Louisville's Coliseum has a new album, House With a Curse , out today. And in honor of the hellacious record's release, frontman Ryan Patterson will be taking the reigns of Buzzgrinder today. I'm currently reading the flawed, yet enjoyable Spray Paint the Walls: The Story of Black Flag , which has not only put me onto a serious Black Flag kick (I forgot how awesome the Slip It In and Loose Nut LPs are!), but has gotten me thinking about my [...]

DOWNLOAD: Pocket featuring Steve Kilbey - "Hear in Noiseville" Last year, Pocket (aka Richard Jankovich) started releasing a series of singles where he collaborated with a "dream list" of vocalists on the A-Side and introduced a breaking artist on the B-Side. Each of these singles also featured three remixes from a variety of electronic music producers. Pocket has compiled the A-Sides from the first five singles along with five of the remixes and three of the B-Sides and has released this compilation through iTunes as " 5 [...]
By now, you all should know that we at The Ripple Effect love music for a variety of different reasons. But one that seems to get forgotten in the midst of all of the sounds of the music is the words, and the affect that they can have on the listener. Recently, one of our long time readers, a Waverider, and influential being in his own right, came to us after a conversation we all had about the band Dag Nasty. He provided us with a moving piece that he had written about personal strength and eventual understanding based on [...]

Among my punk friends your credibility diminishes in direct correlation to each subsequent Dag Nasty album you profess to enjoy. Those punk friends then, according to their criteria, are much more punk than I. "Can I Say" (the beginning and end of Dag Nasty for my punk-er friends) and "Wig Out at Denko's" stand out as my favorites by far, but "Field Day" played hand in hand with those first two albums on my desert road trips to and from college over the years (Although to this day, I still haven't ripped it to my computer—that's changing today though. I [...]

Recession blues yall and I've been digging through the personal back catalog to see what I can hock for food. Apparently nobody buys CDs any more so I'm back to flipping vinyl. There in the back of the closet I came across a vintage '80s slab from Dag Nasty which has since gone out of print. Most are familiar with their Dischord releases - Can I Say and Wig Out and Denkos - but the subsequent release of Field Day had the misfortune of coming out on now defunct Giant Records and [...]

With the day of mass turkey consumption rapidly approaching and Christmas right around the corner, one has to arm him, or her, self with plenty of conversational ammunition to wage a successful battle in the holiday banter wars. And can you think of a better way to impress your friends and family this holiday season than with obscure Rock And Roll fun facts? Plus these little nuggets of joy can be dropped at just the right time to get you out of potentially painful discussions. For example, say you're sitting around the dinner table devouring your third helping [...]
By now a ton of people have already voted in the U.S. election. My state (oregon) is absentee vote only. No Polls. Nobody ever believes me. You can drop them off or mail em in but there is no designated area where people can show up to vote. All my life I have had radical political [...]

This coming weekend, pop-punk pioneers All will be second billed on the final night of Riot Fest in Chicago. The event is notable because it will feature former lead singer Scott Reynold's on the mic once again. Don't know All? Here's why you should. Most people are familiar with the Descendents - whose songs have been covered by Sublime, Face To Face, Blink-182 (the list goes on and on) but only a fraction of these listeners are acquainted with All. All formed when Descendents lead singer, famed nerd Milo Aukerman, left the band to pursue his doctorate in [...]
Don't worry, Dischord is still keeping its DIY aesthetic. But the legendary label is bringing things into the 90s by digitizing the entire Dischord collection. And they haven't put all the eggs in one basket, either, offering fans several purchasing options . This way, you can finally get all of Q and Not U 's catalog without leaving your couch. Not to mention those Dag Nasty albums. And the Rites of Spring stuff... and the list goes on.
Last night after Hailey was tucked into bed I sat down with a few beers and watched Murderball . We don't have anything specific planned for today, but I'm sure we'll find something productive to do. As for the songs below, welcome to a few songs to help Amy cope with sitting in an airport for a few hours today. MP3 | Fujiya & Miyagi - Collarbone MP3 | The Clash - Should [...]
I almost want to ban the ad, but Google never serves up album ads so I'll take that over an ad for a TV show. But I would rather sell some adspace to a few bands. I don't really want to get into why I don't like Anti-Flag because I don't want to sound like an a-hole, so instead...I bring you... Songs/Bands that are infinitely superior to Anti-Flag I tried to keep it " Punk Rock" but I got into a few subgenres. Against Me! [...]
Chicago musician James Eric has accomplished quite a bit in recent years. Self-releasing four albums, as well as producing, editing, and composing the score for Meet The Monkeys a documentary directed by Collin Souter which focuses on the importance of arts education in elementary schools, and the positive effect that a non-for-profit theater company has on the Chicago community. In October he released a greatest hits album entitled, Tonight The Moon , and the album is a great introduction to James' music for those who have not heard his previous albums. James also [...]
