Music DVD Roundup: Some fine rock music DVDs have been released in the last few months. Included here are three of the best.

mp3: Dale Hawkins - Cross-Ties mp3: Dale Hawkins - La-Do-Dada Here's a couple of late 1950s rock'n'roll tunes from Louisiana native, Dale Hawkins. He released these just a year after his standout hit, Susie Q. Cross-Ties is an instrumental sax filled surf rock type tune, so you know it's a fave of mine. For some reason, I think it might have been the originally intended a-side, but it was the more poppy rock-a-billy La-Do-Dada that charted. They were both recorded at a KWKH Radio Shereveport session in June of 1958 [...]

Dale Hawkins, cousin of the legendary rockabilly raver Ronnie Hawkins, is most commonly remembered for writing and recording the original version of the swamp-rock standard "Suzie Q" in 1957. Born and raised in Louisiana, Hawkins had reached a milestone at the beginning of his career by bringing the sound of the swamp to the masses. However, Hawkins was much more than just a writer or a singer, and he spent the next ten years recording more singles for Chess Records and working behind the scenes as a producer and A&R man. By 1967 Hawkins was itchin' to cut [...]

mp3: Dale Hawkins - Susie Q Five years ago I had the privilege to visit New Orleans. It was about six months before the levees broke and my purpose there was to see live music; and that I surely did. My long term memory's a bit rubbish but thankfully, in a blog post , I recorded a list of some of the artists I saw during my eight day stay -- Link Wray, Betty Harris, BB King, Ike Turner, Robert Lockwood Jr, Isaac Hayes, Barbara Lynn, Archie Bell, Eddie Bo, Dr John, [...]
After a hyperactive beginning of the year, the Grim Reaper took it mercifully easy on the world of music in February. So featured this month are some musicians who left us during the month past (and one of them died on the last day of January). As always, I don't claim that this list is complete. * * * Herman Dunham , 73, doo wop singer with The Solitaires, the Vocaleers and The Blenders, on January 31 The Solitaires [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Rockabilly singer and guitarist Dale Hawkins died in Little Rock, Ark. on Feb. 13 after a three-year battle with colon cancer. He was 73. Hawkins made his mark with the 1957 hit, 'Susie Q,' which featured guitarist and future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer James Burton, who also played in Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley 's bands. Recording and performing well into his 70s, Hawkins has also played with Roy Buchanan and Scotty Moore . [...]

I've been getting a little static lately from the readers of this blog about the lack of posting frequency here. This is a blog. It's not my job, but it feels like it. A few months ago and I had to explain this to my son. He's kind of impressed at how many people actually read this (and I am too) but confused at how much time his Dad spends doing it. Today, on the phone he asked me how to download the songs here. So, rather than compose another one of my long winded and angular diatribes [...]

Dale Hawkins: LA-Memphis-Tyler [ purchase ] Dale Hawkins hit it big in '59 with Suzie Q, but created his roots rock masterpiece 10 years later. Recorded in three cities, the album title pays them tribute: "LA, Memphis & Tyler, Texas." It was finally put out on CD two years ago and it's a real cooker, featuring two tracks penned by fellow swamp rocker Bobby Charles . A few cuts have killer horn charts, the instrumental Back Street, Little Rain Cloud, and the title track above. I [...]
Abigail Mathilda "Ma" Hunkle -- mother, shopkeeper, and the original Red Tornado -- takes the good fight straight to the Reichsfurher's mustachioed kisser: (from All-American Comics #40, July 1942; by Sheldon Mayer) Power rings, gravity rods, and magic lassos? Bah! I'd take a soup pot, a strong right hook, and a mismatched set of longjohns over such frivolities any day. Bless ya, Ma Hunkle. If the high muckety-mucks at DC are as [...]
Been traveling around the Mississippi Delta (presently in Greenwood, MS) for over a week now, doing juke joint research and eating all manner of fried food, soul food, crawfish, et al (speaking of, might I recommend Lusco's restaurant in Greenwood, MS). Look for the next installment of Car Jamming soon-ish. Right now though, we're [...]

In case you haven't noticed, guitar players have a special place here in Fluvile. James Burton holds an esteemed distinction among guitarists. Not only is he the quintessential sideman, but he has played with both Elvis'. Hum Susie-Q for a bit. It's the riff you're humming, right? James Burton wrote that. He was aleady a veteran of the Louisiana Hayride when he recorded it with Dale Hawkins at the tender age of 15, before migrating to Bob Luman's band and then being snatched up by Ricky Nelson who was recording next door. Burton [...]
