There are innumerable reasons to love Newark, NJ duo dälek : the skillful crossover appeal they engender with progressive metal fans, the lonely furrow they plow from the often generic mainstream of hip hop, the overwhelmingly dark layers of the sound, the fact that Mike Patton likes them enough to sign them to Ipecac...my fan boy cup runneth over. So it was with some degree of excitement - and, yes, incredulity - that I read an understated submission for Oktopus, the [...]

My original review for this dark, brooding slice of left field hip-hop was cruelly consigned to the digital dustbin in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Suffice it to say that my faith in the auto-save option is now to be replaced with obsessive-compulsive pasting into Notepad and back again once I've finished. Part of my spiel, however, was about cutting down the length of reviews (and subsequently getting more completed), so perhaps this was a (harsh, frustrating) way of modifying my scribblings. [...]
Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band contains Benjamin Verdoes and his 13 year old brother Marshall. A 13 year old? Now I feel old. The band's full length on Dead Oceans was co-produced by Scott Colburn (of Animal Collective and Arcade Fire fame). A recent news posting on Dead Oceans namechecks Wolf Parade , Modest Mouse , Pixies , Thin Lizzy , and Queen when talking about the band's sound. That's quite a list. A 13 year old? Get ready for some indiepoprock. Downloadable: "Anchors Dropped" (scjag mp3) [...]
FAUST: IN A CHAOTIC STATE OF MIND

Elisabeth Sladen (R.I.P.; 1948-2011)
There are various little moments that stick out from when I was a child. Accidentally smashing the front room television is one – my Dad was not best pleased; nearly getting hit by a car is another – my Mum chastised me for that one. I even remember my thrill as Sky broadcast the Transformers film at 6am one Christmas Day morning – neither parent displayed much pleasure at the early call. But
Daleks for Kids
The only thing that sucks about these battery-powered Daleks , which kids can ride in, and oh yeah, come with ten stock phrases, including "We are the superior beings!", "Seek, locate, annihilate!", and of course "Exterminate!", is that there isn't a comparable toy T.A.R.D.I.S. To date, the Power Wheel was always my, "Shit, I wish I had one of those as a kid" toys, but now it would have to be these ride-in Dalek. It can travel almost two mph and rotates 360 degrees. Sadly, it [...]

Dalek: No Question (Jacob 2-2 Remix)
Brooklyn-based producer, Jacob 2-2, just hit us with a remix for hip-hop outfit Dalek and there is No Question regarding it's delivery. Electrofunk and future-hop beats with playful melodies, 8-bit noises and slippery PBS synths. He recently completed a new (and the first) 4 song EP entitled Gifted Child that you can grab here. They're just kinda meandering through life, kinda bouncing from one thing to the next, like we all are. We start out empty and just kind of fill ourselves up along the way. Spit out shit, pick up new shit. - Dalek on his Space Monkey Character With influences ranging from early American animation to classic Expressionist painters, Dalek 's work is highly character-driven with a distinct design orientation. For this feature, Ricky Powell and Dalek discuss the development of his "iconic Space Monkey character" while getting an interior look at his [...]

Dalek Interview
BKRW Interviewed Dalek just before his show with Mike giant opened and got to talk to him about his new style, tattoos, sneakers and what inspires him. It's pretty dope and gives you a really good look into Dalek's style. In case you don't know, Dalek was an assistant to fame pop culture artist, Takashi Murakami for a number of years. During his apprenticeship, he developed his distinctive style of strong colors separated by geometrical shapes. He also created the iconic space monkey character that became a main staple of his art, which looks like [...]

Dälek, Gutter Tactics (Ipecac)
During Fennesz's paint-stripping set at the Mike Patton-curated ATP in Minehead last December, Oktopus from Dälek could be seen down front nodding his head with the rest of us. And why shouldn't he? Both Fennesz and Dälek have been fortifying their own walls of sound in live performance in recent years, using some [...]

Dälek - Gutter Tactics
This is what Sage Francis might sound like if he was black and didn't mind covering up his cocky, intelligent hip-hop poetry with more noise. These beats are dark, experimental static like something Gang Gang Dance or Teith might do (yeah, I'm name-dropping like a true hipster douchebag), except someone is rapping over them. It's not the first time someone has taken experimental electronics and turned it into hip-hop, and it won't be the last, but I like where this is going.
