"tourist" - art print by Sarah Jurado - sarahjurado.com (click to purchase) Thinking of putting together a Damien Jurado covers collection (similar to our J. Tillman Cover Song Project ) because we all want more Jurado in our lives, right? Do a full week of covers here on the site...yeah, that sounds reaaaaally good. Now....to collect the contributors...if you think you could be one of them - email us [...]
I have what's considered a good view. Here's the last song of our house show with Damien Jurado last night in Colorado Springs. A lot of wanting and waiting led up to this fairly exquisite moment. Damien is on tour right now, a combination of house and venue shows. You should get on that.

The first performance of our Hood to Hood 2013 broadcast is a special collaborative performance by Jon Russell , Damien Jurado , and Tomo Nakayama , all Seattle based singer-songrwriters. So far Jon Russell has played just one show as a solo musician, an acoustic show at Neumos, though he has been playing with the indie pop rock outfit The Head and the Heart since its inception. Damien Jurado is the most seasoned of the three; since the 90s he's been known as a steadily producing talented folk lo-fi musician. Rounding out the trio is yet another [...]

Weary Engine Blues - a new covers collection for the late Jason Molina - arrived with William Schaff's excellent Molina Map illustration last week via Graveface Records. The screenprint has since sold out, but physical copies of the double album remain available , 19 tracks of which can now be bought digitally with all proceeds from either purchase going to Molina's family. Above, hear a beautiful, heartbreaking standout from the set by Molina's former tourmate: Damien Jurado performing "I've Been Riding with the Ghost" off Songs: Ohia's Steve Albini-produced Magnolia Electric [...]

Damien Jurado put out his most recent LP last year via Secretly Canadian and it was called Maraqopa . Damien Jurado has been releasing music steadily since 1995 but his last two LPs (with production from Richard Swift) have seemingly ushered in a new era in his already prolific career. Below we've got a 13 song (candlelit) performance that was taped in Tacoma, WA. The setting is ideal for Jurado's rainy day folk songs. The performance also includes standouts "Working Titles" and "Museum Of Flight", from Jurado's broader sounding Maraqopa [...]

Tickets for the house shows will be limited to 30-50 and can be purchased at Undertow Tickets . Full list of of shows is below. And as a nice little bonus, the good peeps at Secretly Canadian have provided a little preview of what to expect on this tour. Damien recently played a candlelit show at Urban Grace Church in Tacoma, [...]
One of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

Each year, KEXP descends upon the winning neighborhood of our annual Hood to Hood Challenge during our Spring Fundraising Drive, and this year, Seattle's University District won decisively. To celebrate their victory, we are broadcasting live on Friday, April 19th, from the University of Washington’s Red Square as part of Husky Fest. Join us between 6:00am and 6:00pm as DJs John Richards, Cheryl Waters and Kevin Cole spin live and local bands perform all day long. Plus, you can enjoy discounts at local businesses and KEXP’s Community Partnerships Benefit show at Cafe Racer and much more! [...]
This was an amazing singer/songwriter's night at Neumos! Tomo Nakayama (of Grand Hallway) kicked off the night with his unique sound and powerful blasts of energy! Usually people will skip the first artist and come for the headliners...what a huge mistake that would be when Tomo is playing! Some may have come for Damien Jurado and Jon Russell but quickly fell in love. Tomo will also be in an up and coming movie with Ellen Page called Touchy Feely . Damien [...]
Lord Huron - Strangers (The Kinks) I went through my 'Kinks stage' when I was 17 after watching Wes Anderson's Life Aquatic, and Strangers was (and still is) my favorite of all their tracks. Lord Huron who recently released his first album, Lonesome Dreams (2012) often covers ... Continue reading
With hardcore Northwesterner's now back from a cold but successful weekend at Treefort Music Fest in Boise, we have a whole week of great new shows to warm you back in Seattle. On Monday night, we welcome Iris DeMent at The Triple Door, and then on Tuesday we have an exciting night out with Duff McKagan's It's So Easy and Other Lies, A Punk's Revue at the Moore Theatre, Major Lazer, Angel Haze, and Lunice are at Showbox SoDo, and Doldrums and Sean Nicholas Savage are downstairs at Barboza. More surprises on Wednesday [...]
Some incredible folk artists have been emerging from Sweden during the last few years. Idiot Wind is the pseudonym of singer-songwriter Amanda Bergman. She's married to Kristian Matsson aka Tallest Man On Earth, and without drawing too many comparisons to their styles; they most definitely share a skill in writing original songs that ... With all of the hullabaloo surrounding Foxygen—who, yes, released what's sure to be one of the very best records of 2013, if not the next five years or so—I've been digging into the back catalogue of Richard Swift—the man responsible for discovering the act and producing their debut full-length, We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic . Foxygen principles Sam France and Jonathan Rado are not only indebted to Swift's ear for talent and the analog recording techniques he's mastered at his fabled National Freedom studio in Cottage Grove, Oregon, but also Swift's own outsider-pop music—a [...]

Noise Pop 2013: Damien Jurado @ The Chapel 3/1/13 - photo by Debra Zeller Friday night's Noise Pop Festival offered a chance to see a clash of styles within a couple blocks of each other, both in terms of the music played and the venues. First, I caught The Bay Bridged's Noise Pop Happy Hour at Bender's featuring Golden Void , Wild Moth , and DSTVV , and then hitched over to another Noise Pop performance from Damien Jurado down the [...]

No official videos today folks, we have live videos across the board. The songs are not so new (Jurado), not really all that new (Cold Specks) and fairly new (Hayden) and bonus video from people I know (Elephant Micah). Hayden - Motel - Live At The Rivoli from NOW Magazine on Vimeo . Cold Specks - When The City Lights Dim from Mute on Vimeo . Bonus video today is [...]
Kristian Matsson and Amanda Bergman play Damien Jurado's "Working Titles" in a stellar fashion. It's simple and amazingly beautiful, it certainly captured me. Bonus below is the Idiot Wind 73 on bandcamp. Tallest Man on Earth: Site // Facebook Idiot Wind: Site // Bandcamp
I toss around the words “haunting,” vulnerable,” and “raw” often when reflecting on music, probably too often. I think this ends up being the case because I choose to write about music that strikes me, that I’m passionate about, and these are the qualities that at the end of the day I'm most drawn to. It should come as no surprise then that these are the exact adjectives that I am overwhelmed with as I have been listening to Night Bed’s recent debut Country Sleep . Winston Yellen’s voice is as rough and ornately [...]
