Damien Jurado ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth The Neptune Theater with its many green-eyed sea gods looming over the great room and ghosts lurking in backstage corners was probably Seattle's most appropriate setting to introduce Damien Jurado's most ambitious, and so far widely appreciated release to date, Maraqopa. Though releasing his own cassettes led to a [...]

Damien Jurado - "Life Away From the Garden" . I did not collect sports cards except in my early teens, when I lugged around a binder of Pro Set hockey cards. I didn't collect them because I was interested in hockey: I collected them because they were little treasures, cheap enough to collect. Glossy hologrammed treasures, that came in packets of eight. I'm older now, but sometimes I think that buying records - those shiny CDs, beautiful black 12"s - is motivated by the same thing. Hoarded treasures, lined up on a shelf. Unlike hockey cards, records [...]

Damien Jurado: Maraqopa - Damien Jurado is a singer/songwriter from Seattle, Washington. I've followed Jurado's work since his debut on Sub Pop all those years ago. There are very few singer/songwriters who evoke the same imagery and tell a story like he can. In many ways, he's in a class by himself. This is what has kept people like me coming back every 2 years or so for as long as we have. The emotion in his voice drips from every lyric and creates a landscape in the listener's mind that's hard to shake. [...]

With the recent release of Maraqopa , Damien Jurado's 12th studio album Seattle Times music writer Andrew Matson received four cover songs from Damien's wife Sarah featuring musicians and bands from the Seattle area. The four part series started with Jon Russell of The Head and The Heart (who just recently did a fantastic show for Austin City Limits ) covering "Beacon Hill" from 20102s Saint Bertlett followed by Pickwick with "I Am The Greatest of All Liar" from Jurado's lesser known Holding His Breath EP from way back in [...]
Well, this is pretty sweet. Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk was the party responsible for bringing singer-songwriter Damien Jurado to Sub Pop way the hell back in the late '90s. And now Enigk has recorded a smoothly pretty version of Jurado's quite-nice 2008 song " Last Rights ," a propos of absolutely nothing. Stream Enigk's cover below. Read More...

While a number of notable singer-songwriters, such as Bill Callahan , recently paid their debt to Leonard Cohen in the run-up to his latest release, Damien Jurado has been similarly honored as a new record hits shelves by a few fellow Pacific Northwest musicians influenced by his work. Dolerean's Al James, The Head and the Heart's Jon Russell, and Pickwick have all turned in reverent cover tunes from the Jurado oeuvre to the Seattle Times newspaper. This take, however, is a favorite: "Last Rights," Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk's [...]
In 2010, Seattle folk troubadour Damien Jurado teamed up with producer Richard Swift to craft one of the most immersive, and best, records in his 15-year career: Saint Bartlett . With Swift's bleak, dream-folk production breathing new life into already robust anatomy, the record was atmospheric, anthemic, evocative, and, because it was a Jurado album, it got only a fraction of the acclaim it deserved. But Jurado has gotten used to his relative obscurity, and it hasn't stopped him from joining forces with Swift for round two, in what the duo [...]

Skip to Yahoo! WebPlayer Damien Jurado - Museum Of Flight Seattle has always been known for the music. And recently, the successes of a variety of indie-folk bands and a rise in soulful acts from the Emerald City have solidified what many people have always known: Seattle's got it when it comes to great music. But in an off year for Fleet Foxes, and as new acts from Seattle are growing and [...]

Damien Jurado - Working Titles

Since Maraqopa came out yesterday, I thought this would be a good opportunity to plug the interviews I did with Damien Jurado and Richard Swift for my "day job." (That's in quotes because it's actually a nighttime gig...irony, right?) During the FPK After Dark conversations , a number of topics were discussed. We talked about everything from Swift's time in Starflyer 59 to Jurado's love for the Grateful Dead . And [...]
Album of the year is coming early this 2012.

Happy Presidents Day week, everybody. A commanding list of new releases awaits you in stores today. Among them is the latest by our recent guest and longtime friend of KEXP, Damien Jurado , whose Maraqopa would be good enough to get him elected President of Seattle if there were such a thing. Our Music Director, Don Yates, says the new album "sounds like nothing else in Jurado's illustrious catalog. It's a dynamic and expansive set of adventurous psych-folk with a variety of haunting, well-crafted songs featuring trippy guitar work, atmospheric keyboards, swelling strings and various [...]
