Damien Jurado first appeared in the Christian hardcore group Coolidge, a band also featuring future Pedro the Lion member David Bazan on drums. In 1996 they were featured on the Tooth & Nail compilation I'm Your Biggest Fan Vol. 1 with the track "Trapped". The group later went on to release a 4 song EP that was released on Radio Recordings. Jurado's solo career began during the mid-1990s, with him releasing lo-fi folk based recordings on his own cassette-only label, Casa Recordings. Gaining a local cult following in Seattle, he was brought to the attention of Sub [...]

The ever wonderful Damien Jurado has announced that his new record Caught In The Trees will be released on October 27th via Secretly Canadian. The album, a collaborative project between Jurado and band his band members Eric Fischer and Jenna Conrad and judging by the track 'Gillian Was A Horse' the album will certainly be worth the four month wait. Download the song at the bottom of the post. In other Jurado news, he will be heading over to the UK in August to showcase material from the new album. He will [...]
Pennsylvania's Innerpartysystem has become the first band to release a chocolate 7" single. Only 100 copies of the edible "Don't Stop" are available, but this video shows the rock snack in action (um, make that 99 copies?). Tastes like Hot Fuss .
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): Lymbyc Systym - Astrology Days (mp3) ( [...]

I've been getting quite excited by the US presidential race, even if I'm not so excited by any of the candidates. This Hilary comeback is quite something - worthy of a song dedication, I think. And what better song than one called "Ohio". Sure, it's about an abduction, but then Neil Young's song was [...]

Photograph: Doylestown House - The Stove by Charles Sheeler It's storming outside. You're sitting by the stove getting warm while the sound of the howling wind and the rain clattering on the windows blends with the music. The phone rings. You just let it ring. Not tonight. There will be another day tomorrow. Tonight it's just you, the music and the sound of the storm outside. That's the scene I picture for this playlist. This is dark music for staying inside, alone, while hiding from the howling wind and the [...]
Abnormally large amounts of you wrote me to ask for a repost of this show, so here it is. Enjoy. Original Post: Few People write better folk songs than Damien Jurado. Sadder than you are, and armed with a voice soaked in disenfranchised down-and-outness and a guitar, Jurado is the guy in high school who was writing Nick Drake songs when your buddies were trying to figure out the melody to Lithium on their Japanese Strats. The wonderful people at KEXP are broadcasting shows from [...]

Both Howard and I are doing a fair whack of commuting these days. So there's a lot of time to listen to music, gaze out of the window and think deep thoughts. And I keep finding myself coming over all peculiar on the train. The joys of modern technology mean that I have a veritable treasure trove of sad songs for company and, my God, some of them show no mercy when it comes to plucking at the heartstrings. If you're reading this site, then you'll know what I mean. Still, nothing [...]

Who doesn't like the circus? OK, so besides all of you who are deathly afraid of clowns, who doesn't like the circus? Welcome to The Bigtop , a movie-musical written by Devon Reed. From what I know about it, the film, which is set to be released in early 2008, centers on the life of Vincent O'Malley, a young man who runs away with the circus only to become consumed by his desire for power and the love of a woman. Ahhh...who can't connect their own life with that storyline? [...]

Without getting too self-serving I'd like to point out that 10 days ago was this blog's first Birthday. The past year has been mind-blowingly awesome: meeting lots of cool people, interviewing people I admire, curating a compilation of 16 of my favorite artists, it's really been quite spectacular, and I'd like to thank you all for reading and making the effort worthwhile....so thank you! It's pretty odd for me to post about shows in Athens two days in a row. This season, though, has been really good for shows so far so when something exciting and cool is happening I'll probably concentrate on that rather than other stuff. Which is why all I want to talk about today is Damien Jurado . I was first turned on to Jurado several years ago when he was booking a tour with the also incredible Dave Fischoff . I was doing a lot of house [...]
