Previously on St. Patrick's Day, we've covered Sinead O'Connor, U2, and Celtic Punk; there's an autumnal feature from the 2008 ICONS Irish Music festival lurking in the archives, too, with coverfolk offerings from Solas, Luka Bloom, The Tannahill Weavers, and Alison Brown. In honor of the holiday, on Wednesday, March 17th, we will be reviving long-dead download links on all four of those older posts, so don't forget to return on St. Pat's Day itself for a full Irish breakfast of fine acoustic music. But there's certainly more to be found in the [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours With his gravelly vocals and a raft of classic singer-songwriter influences, Jon Allen is the natural heir to Damien Rice 's much coveted throne. The SXSW -- bound, London-based singer and guitarist sounds like a young, off-kilter Rod Stewart steering away from the middle of the road to knock out blues-tinged anthems with big hooks and even bigger choruses. Describe your sound. Folky, bluesy, melodic, retro and rootsy. Sometimes [...]

Reader's Wives are:
Niall James Holohan on guitars, vocals, Chris Morrin [aka Robotnik] on guitars, keyboards, vocals, Disko on bass and Doug Farrell on drums. I've known about Reader's Wives for a long time but I admit I dismissed their sound very quickly. I was totally wrong to do this. Reader's Wives are releasing a five track EP on March 15th which for me is the best music produced in Ireland so far this year. Niall is a superb songwriter. The lyrics are rich in texture in the same style as [...]

At the Choice awards show on Wednesday night Glen Hansard confirmed in an interview that The Frames are playing Electric Picnic as part of their 20th Anniversary. I wonder if Glen will be given his own stage in the same vein as Damien Rice did a few years back? Taken from 'Headlong' an Austrailian Tour EP is one of the best live songs from The Frames. The Stars Are Underground The Swell Season Tour: [...]

A Weather is a quiet indie-folk band from Portland. Their album, Everyday Balloons was just released a few days ago on Conor Oberst 's Team Love Records and its really lovely. Such a gorgeous band, perfect for a Sunday afternoon stroll with your lover, holding hands watching the trees prepare for spring. Kinda like a pretty Damien Rice album without the grating self-victimisation. Definitely for fans of Bright Eyes , Rilo Kiley , Wilco , etc. [ A Weather - Giant Stairs ] [...]

Dublin band are in fact not forgotten as they are playing the Olympia tonight as part of the Inspirations gig but I thought it was fitting to feature one of our best bands on the blog today. Lir only released two full albums; Magico Magico in 1994 and Nest in 1995. They also released an acoustic sessions mini album and in 2008 released a Lir live album recorded in Vicar Street and Whelans on various nights. Lir were a progressive rock band who performed many legendary gigs around the country during their [...]

The internet's essential tool Google really pissed people off in two ways this week. Firstly if you use the brilliant user-friendly gmail you've been automatically signed up to 'Buzz' [Deadly Buzz?]. Then they go to the extremes by deleting six of the best mp3 music blogs out there. An example of flexing their muscles? Yes! They are not making friends and influencing people at the minute! My first attempt at a music blog was www.mixtape4melfi.blogspot.com which didn't work due to lack of an objective and because it had a stupid name! I [...]

Ok, so its Valentines day. For some of you that means you have to get all dressed up and what not and do your best to be romantic, for others it means that you have to do your best to not seem lonely, for me on the other hand its a day where I enjoy calling all my friends in a relationship around 10 pm and ask them what they are doing just to fuck up their game. Well, Valentines day is a day for lovers so what better to write about than the best love songs, old [...]

I have a not-so-secret admirer at work. He's a patient of ours and he's got a thing for me. It's flattering, creepy and sad all at the same time. Flattering because, honestly, who wouldn't like to be told that you're a "beautiful specimen of a woman" or that someone wants to "wrap his arms around you and squeeze you"? Even if it's coming from someone old enough to be your father who uses a walker and doesn't bathe regularly--it's kind of an ego boost. On the [...]

Now that we've finally heard Damien Rice's new title song to forthcoming Tibet documentary When the Dragon Swallowed the Sun , I'm even more anxious to hear those Maverick Movie Award-winning new compositions from Thom Yorke and Philip Glass as well. Just as we predicted , Rice performed at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival last night, opening for the documentary's official screening. The song is every bit as stunning as director Dirk Simon told us it would be and Rice sounds better than ever, despite having been out of [...]

LOST: The Final Season is finally here and to pay tribute to my all-time favorite show I've made what I consider to be the definitive mix of music featured on LOST. You can download the entire mix in a zip here , and read how each song is used in the show (plus which episode it appeared first) below. Feel free to use this to soundtrack your LOST premiere party tonight. I'll most likely be posting some thoughts on here as the season progresses. See you in another life, brutha. Download LOST Mix [...]
I admit it. I'm one of those geeks who can't wait for the start of LOST Season 6 tonight. Its really the only TV show that I watch, and I fully blame my buddy Gorrck's wife Sa-Rock for getting me addicted at the start of Season 2 (when the castaways were trying to find out what was in "The Hatch"). Last year I started a project where I was going to re-watch all of the previous LOST episodes, take detailed notes, and start a LOST reading and song list. The LOST writers, editors, producers, whoever [...]

We opened this year with an exclusive post about Radiohead's Thom Yorke writing three new songs for upcoming Tibet documentary When The Dragon Swallowed The Sun , which will also include original music by Damien Rice and Philip Glass. Director Dirk Simon graciously allowed us to share that Yorke bit, but we were sworn to secrecy regarding the fact that Rice is set to unveil his first new song in years: the "title" track to the documentary, "What If I'm Wrong?" Until tonight, that is. I'm still not entirely [...]
The first video of Sunday's charity sing-song hit YouTube today and it is special. Here we have Glen Hansard, Natalie Merchant, Paddy Casey, Mundy, Paul Brady and Damien Rice doing their best singing The Auld Triangle! An excellent review and some wonderful pictures can be found on State.com here: http://www.state.ie/2010/01/li ve-reviews/glen-hansard-haiti- fundraiser-whelan%e2%80%99s-du blin/

Isn't it great when you get more then you bargained for? Judging by the line of shivering punters clambering for the Whelan's door at 8pm sharp on a Sunday night (and equally, the number of assorted late-comers groveling for tickets), Glen Hansard alone was more than enough to keep the crowd happy, and to send a nice big stash of Euros on their way over to Port Au Prince. Glen Hansard, though, doesn't do things by halves. When the assembled masses first lift themselves from the beer-swilling collectives that have gathered stage front it's to greet Mundy, the [...]
Just before their big NYC gig in the amazing venue that is Radio City, the band with Josh Ritter and what looks like a random saxaphone busker played You Ain't Going Nowhere and Into The Mystic! Thankfully YouTube enables us to check it out! Here's the Setlist! Swell Season Radio City Music Hall - 1/19/2010 - Setlist: Fallen From the Sky Lies Low Rising Feeling the Pull In These Arms The Rain The Moon If You Want Me Fantasy Man Say It [...]
I've never been a huge White Stripes fan. I have all the respect in the world for Jack White and his music, but have simply never fallen head-over-heels for the band. However, Under Great White Northern Lights , a documentary following the Stripes' 2007 tour, might be the moment where die-hard fans, Johnny-come-lately's and ambivalent folks like myself can all come together to enjoy the Detroit rocker's celebrated fuzzed-out blues. The film is directed by Emmet Malloy, who along with his brother Chris, artfully directed the Jack Johnson surf film Thicker Than Water as well as the [...]

Filed under: News , Holy Hell Damien Rice does interviews only slightly more frequently than Axl Rose or Sly Stone . But apparently when the Irish troubadour does open up, he decides to make it count. OhNoTheyDidn't reports that the singer, in an interview with Hot Press, explained his split with frequent collaborator Lisa Hannigan for the first time. "I was a complete a--hole on many occasions," he said, blaming the difficulty of the music business and touring. [...]
