Damon & Naomi were interviewed at length on WBEZ show/podcast Sound Opinions . The duo talked at length about their career including discussing the prospects of a Galaxie 500 reunion. Naomi: "I can't imagine ever doing that... the idea now of playing those songs, and even more of playing them with Dean... it just doesn't seem like it would be a very artistically gratifying experience" Songs performed live were How Do I Say Goodbye, Turn of the Century, Helsinki and A Second Life. You can [...]
[ download ] [tweetmeme] It's hard to believe, but dream-pop progenitors Damon & Naomi have been making music together for a quarter of a century-first over the course of three albums as two-thirds of seminal indie act Galaxie 500 and for the past two decades as their current eponymous act. Over the span of this tenure the pair has given shape to entire musical movements across the indie spectrum, influencing a swath of acts including Death Cab for Cutie, Low , Mazzy Star , and Mojave 3. Any band whose [...]

Damon & Naomi have made four of their studio albums and the Sub Pop Years compilation available on Bandcamp . You can stream the full albums for free and download them (in almost any format you could dream of) for a very reasonable $8.88 (apparently "those 82s are good luck in China"). There's an interview with Naomi Yang on the design website Imprint . Of the Galaxie 500 covers, if I had to choose a favorite I think it would be On Fire—I took that photo myself—I made a crazy contraption with my camera so that I could press the shutter and be in the photo and I really wanted it to look like a 602s Elektra records cover (Love, the Stooges, Tim Buckley). It was a moment when Bruce Mau was doing all those beautiful Zone Book covers—the colors of those covers were [...]

I just caught D&N in San Diego, the last stop of the band's tour with Amor de Dias . Was bummed to learn that guitarist extraordinaire Michio Kurihara wasn't able to get into the country. D&N still managed to unfurl a lovely tapestry with the help of Bhob Rainey on soprano sax and Heather MacIntosh on cello. Amor de Dias's Alasdair MacLean and Lupe Nunez-Fernandez filled out a couple of songs. Kurihara's mood-enhancing strokes provide some of the peaks on False Beats and True Hearts . His subtle embellishment of [...]

It has been a bonanza month at MM - our in-box overflows daily and here is another quick round-up of new stuff we've discovered. Once again we're entirely failing to do the artists justice, but listen to the songs and if you like what you hear please do investigate them a bit more! Hotel & Highways album Lost River is an easy-going folk-tinged meditation on the complexities of life that echoes the halycon days of Fleetwood Mac and CSNY . Try the effortlessly melodic Train Whistle and Heaven [...]

Damon and Naomi: False Beats and True Hearts This is a surprisingly upbeat way of marking 25 years of Mr Kruskowski and Ms Yang performing together. Their new record doesn't focus as much on the introspective, melancholic sound that we've grown slowly to love, like a relationship that starts in friendship and admiration and evolves into something deeper and more soulful. Instead it opens with the definitive statement of 'Walking Backwards', with Michio Kurihawa's [...]

Frank Yang So yes, I am currently abroad - huzzah - but this little dispatch isn't meant to rub it in to those who are still back in Toronto (or wherever you might be that is not Barcelona). Instead, it's to gently remind you that there's still plenty of stuff of the live music variety to see right there in Hogtown this week; more than is typical, I'd go so far as to say. So here's a quick run-down of stuff that, were I not elsewhere, I'd either be at or consider being at, starting [...]

FRIDAY, MAY 20 Merrill Garbus, who performs as tUnE-yArDs , sees things in a million shades of gray. Her lyrics and interviews are filled with more questions than answers. Is she borrowing—or stealing—her beats and yelps from African music? Should she sing about the political views that are inherently a part of her personality, or will she come across as preachy? Should she make her music more confrontational to avoid having it played in Urban Outfitters? And if her music is even more confrontational, will it alienate the listener? That kind of ambivalence could bog a [...]
Damon & Naomi are no strangers to fans of dreamy soundscapes. Whether in Galaxie 500 or as a tandem, they've made some of the most beautiful music of the last quarter century. The pair recently released a gorgeous new album, False Beats and True Hearts, and pull into the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto on May 25th. I was delighted to have the opportunity to ask Naomi a few questions before they
After a blockbuster week of new releases last week (so many that we had a part one and two), this week's lot of new releases is also impressive, just not as jam-packed as last week. But, don't fret - there is plenty to listen to, including new music from: Danger Mouse Bahamas Chad VanGaalen Zachary [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Shoko Ishikawa If you've been reading this site for a little while, you may have noted that as of this Saturday - rapture notwithstanding - I'll be en route to (hopefully) sunny Barcelona for a week and then on to London for a few days as a chaser. And if you've been reading this site for a while longer, you may recall that no other band more vividly conjures memories of my last visit to the England than The Clientele . Which is why the existence of Amor de Días , which [...]
Songcraft nourishes their efforts, which sink in, compacted as earthier, evocative tunes. These are wind-attenuated tendrils to their more barbed roots. After Galaxie 500, guitarist Dean Wareham led Luna towards increasingly lower volume, channeling the Velvet Underground's tension into lounge-tinged and club-inflected indie-rock. Similarly, drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang have taken, the past 20 years, a direction into pastoral, nostalgic, literate tunes. On this, their seventh record together, they carry the softer sound of Galaxie 500's heirs that has dominated their interpretations. Joined as on their recordings the past decade by Ghost's guitarist Michio...

This week Damon & Naomi played twice in London. On Tuesday the duo, accompanied on this tour again by Kurihara, took to the stage at Rough Trade East for a short in-store performance... shorter for me as I got the start time wrong and was carrying out my family's demands that I bring home bagels from the wonderful 24 hour Beigel Bake . I missed the first song but caught the remaining four or five songs (I really should keep notes) that included Ueno Station, The Well, a couple of songs from the new album and a cover of [...]
Damon has written a piece on Leonard Cohen's Various Positions for the excellent Delusion of Adequacy 's Artists-on-Albums series. The production is hair-raisingly mid-'80s, with live drums mic'd to sound like a drum machine, and synthesizer parts that sound like presets being put through their paces at a Guitar Center. The arrangements and mix only really sound good on my equally dated car stereo. And yet lately I can't stop listening to this record.

Damon and Naomi , the duo formed from the ashes of Galaxie 500 , is heading back out on the road in May. Though the early part of the month finds the band kicking things off in the UK at first, it won't be long until they're back state-side. The schedule for the band includes a performance at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on May 22 (though they also have a pre-tour in-store on April 16 at Sound Fix in Brooklyn). The full list of shows is below. Damon and Naomi [...]
