Editor's Note: In the interest of preserving the environment this holiday season, we are going to recycle and reuse some old blog posts. Oh, there may be a new one here and there but we want to reduce our footprint on the blogosphere (whatever that means). In other words, we're just lazy. Don't worry, we have made sure all our links are working for the most part. So let the holiday season begin! With Thanksgiving coming up and all, we are sure you have a lot of things to do and to think about. [...]
Live in New York finds Dan Bern once again taking his delightfully offbeat bag of songs and comical cultural commentary to the stage in a fitting follow-up to 2010's extraordinary Live in Los Angeles . This time, however, friends and tourmates Common Rotation assume the role of full-time backing band, lending richer, fuller folk textures to Bern's songs. It's a change that distinguishes this record from its live predecessor but also leaves the listener yearning a bit for those rougher, more abrasive moments usually interspersed in Bern's performances. A mellowed [...]

After just flying into Denver from SXSW, Dan Bern was at the top of his game last night at the Soiled Dove Underground . In 1998, Dan Bern had a premonition of sorts. He would write a song called "Tiger Woods", a tongue-in-cheek tale of Bern's aspirations to stand in Tiger's shoes and strut proudly with "big ole' balls" along the way. "Sometimes I wish I was Tiger Woods," sings Bern. Not known for hit songs or massive media attention, Bern's tune would clear nearly 100,000 Youtube hits post-Woods fiasco. "Sometimes I wish I was Tiger Woods. Granted, sometimes more than other times," added Bern after the prodigy golfer brought sex-rehab back into the mainstream. But Bern is more than a man [...]

The show at Mexicali featured local artist Darrin Bradbury along with the band Common Rotation and 90's folk singer/ songwriter Dan Bern . This concert was a reunion show for Darrin Bradbury and April Acerno, who are the founders of a band called Big Wilson River. Their act set the warm hearted folky scene and was enjoyed by various age groups in the crowd. Common Rotation spiced up the show with their variety of instruments used in their act such as xylophones and trumpets. The main act, Dan Bern, snuck onto the stage with a welcoming [...]

Dan Bern will return to Denver on March 19th for a show at the Soiled Dove Underground . Here's one of the more bizarre sets I've seen him play, also from the aforementioned Lowry venue. Photo by Judd Irish Bradley Dan Bern is one of those guys that was recommended by a friend but one who I never really got around to listening to. I mean, to me at least, he was just another one of those self-important singer/songwriters along the same lines as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie. Not that I think those four performers feel self-important, well, except for Dylan on occasion but then he just sounds earnest rather than smug, it's just they have very strong opinions and aren't afraid to share [...]

With Thanksgiving coming up and all, we are sure you have a lot of things to do and to think about. Like: wouldn't it be great if my turkey made the in-laws sick? So sick they couldn't come back for Christmas? Or: Are the Houston Texans (substitute your team name here) going to win any more games? And: Is somebody gonna give me that Springsteen box set for Christmas (so I don't have to drop 100 bucks on it)? Ah, we know you have a lot on your mind. So don't worry - you take care of the [...]

Dan Bern: Too Late To Die Young Purchase: You can be late for a bus, late for a party, or late for an appointment. Although it may be a slight perversion of the intent of this theme, you can also be too late to die in your youth. Iowa native Dan Bern laments the slow death of Elvis and envies those who crashed and burned.

I'll tell y'all what, when you do a monthly podcast you really begin to appreciate how short a month is. It's like you just finished the last podcast when you realize you only have 5 days left before the next one is due. This is also the first podcast I ever made without the use of any beer or whiskey. Outside of there being no slurring by the end of it, I don't really notice much of a difference. Lemme know if you do. This month's show features a pretty good [...]

Coming from the anti-folk scene of the '90's, Dan Bern has been crafting acoustic (mostly) folk music, with lyrics that shine a light on his dry wit and biting social commentary, for over 10 years now. Over those 10+ years, Bernstein has managed to prove that this lyric off his debut cd, Dog Boy Van, "and if you're gonna put me in a box, make sure it's a big box, with lots of windows and a door for me to walk through" was more a mission statement than a mere lyric. [...]
On "Jerusalem", the opening song of Dan Bern 's 1996 debut, Dog Boy Van , the prolific Iowa-born songwriter sang, "And if you must put me in a box/Make sure it's a big box." Some 14 years, 17 records, and several hundred songs later, these words seem remarkably predictive, because nobody has quite found a box big enough to fit Dan Bern in. As a songwriter, he's equal parts Woody Guthrie, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., sex therapist, cultural correspondent, preschool teacher, messiah (self-proclaimed), and baseball fan, and that's only scratching the surface. His live shows—an entertaining and offbeat amalgamation [...]

High Sierra just finalized their lineup for this year's festival. We're excited to announce the final batch of artists to join the 20th Annual High Sierra lineup in what is shaping up to be a celebration for the ages. Joining the bill is Jackie Greene, an authentic, bluesy troubadour and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band - the preeminent artists perpetuating authentic New Orleans Dixieland music. The Carolina Chocolate Drops infuse a contemporary spirit into their traditional Black String Band music. We're excited to welcome back prolific and irreverent singer/songwriter Dan Bern. In addition, joining [...]

Dan Bern: Cure For AIDS [ purchase ] Highly political folk rocker Dan Bern presents a typically bitter-yet-hilarious condemnation of the sexually uptight fear society through portrayal of an alternate universe of orgies and acceptance that follows the invention of a simple little pill that cures AIDS. The song, first published in 1998, still rings true; it may not be front page news any longer, but AIDS remains a gigantic killer, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where it has a significant impact on economic growth, [...]

Jesus fucking Christ. I think I may actually have a badger living in my mouth. Or a muskrat. Or one of those little yappy dog bastard things which always make me want to feed them to our bloody cat. Gin is raping my brain. Fucking bastard. To make matters worse, that insufferable weasel Mrs. Toad is malingering at home, lolling around in bed, watching movies on iTunes and generally just doing bugger all. I WANT TO GET SICK! I never get fucking sick. If I ever have time off work it's either because my back is crippling me, [...]
