A special edition of Monday Morning Blues today with BOS first guest post as our friend The Duke from The Late Greats takes the wheel. Enjoy. Talking Late Greats Blues Tom helped me out a few week's ago with a Songs That Got Me Thru High School post, so I thought I could return the favor by doing a Monday Morning Blues Bash for Bag of Songs. Truth be told, The Duke doesn't have much of a singing voice, which deepens my love [...]

Finally back in Hanover after a very long, stressful, occasionally exhilarating couple of weeks in Oklahoma and Texas. This was the end of the season for debate, with the two national tournaments. Dartmouth made it to the final round of the CEDA National tournament and to the octofinals of the National Debate Tournament, and was also ranked as the #4 team in the country going into the NDT. One of the people on the team who won that tournament was actually my friend Aimi, who has a very nice music blog of her own: the monsters [...]
Today was a bear at work with meetings and site inspections and all sorts of other misery that I plan on forgetting with the aid of whiskey the moment I finish this here post. Dan Bern recently posted an absolutely wonderful new "unreleased" song on his myspace site. Personally, I have not been able to listen to it enough. You can listen to it here or go get a higher quality version at his myspace site . Dan Bern - Witness In other news: The Lightning [...]

A: This is an actual screenshot of an actual ad I saw on an actual Web site: You'd think the "Get a bigger cock!" was enough of a selling point on its own — but the manufacturers of this fine, totally non-fraudulent product (or method, or surgery, or religion, or whatever the "Lomans way" is) take it one step further: Get your hands off of our sex symbol, you Commie bastard! They're going to make you or your man a new man [...]
When I compiled this top twenty list (for Bruce and Heather's 12 X 12 post), I did knocked it out in a hurry, at the end of November. If I could go back now, I would make some changes. The Format would crack the top ten. Damien Rice would move up in numbers. Regina would probably come in second. Greg and Amos would switch seats. Brett Dennen would be voted off the island and replaced by Sonya Kitchell. But it is what it is and hindsight is twenty twenty. No matter how [...]

I would like to say, that back in the summer when I started this series on Thursdays, it was because I knew come November, I could showcase Arlo and his epic masterpiece "Alice's Restaurant Massacree." But that would just be hogwash. Anyway you look at, it may be the only movie every made based on an 18 minute song. Listen to the Arlo Epic Bonus (unrelated to this weekly series but poignant to today) Epic ~ Dan Bern: Thanksgiving Day Parade By the [...]

An election-day special, while I fret all day about the Democrats winning a few Senate races hundreds of miles away, with a few songs I've talked about in the past, and one new one. Vote - The Submarines A fantastic song from my favorite band of the year, with a message ("this system's broken and I'll never vote again") that I'm not quite ready to believe in yet. Let's Not Talk About It - The Mendoza Line Who doesn't love The Mendoza Line? This is [...]

(this is a picture of someone taking a breath...) Dan Bern has a new album out. I have linked the title track for two reasons: a) it contains some great advice for someone who is stressed out over their archive space - or stressed about anything else; b) the mp3 comes from his record label and NOT EZarchive. “Stop whatcha doing and breathe…†Listen ~ Breathe Buy it PS ~ Go VIKINGS!!!

Around the blogs: I Am Fuel, You Are Friends has an update about Brandi Carlile. I Guess I'm Floating has an update (and a new song) from We Will Build. Idolator raises a ruckus about wiki-plagiarism on My Old Kentucky Blog. And a number of folks are talking about the new Lemonheads out today. I haven't had time to give it more than a cursory listen, but will probably post about it in the next week. Instead, today I want to discuss someone who has been criminally underrepresented [...]

(I almost feel like I should apoligize for posting so much great new music. Sorry no one else is covering this stuff. There's so much great music out that is not being written about. Eventually (like early November) it'll quiet down around here as the music industry goes on it's annual winter break.) I could be wrong but I think of Dan Bern as a politically motivated songwriter and singer

The French Kicks shouldn't leave you feeling blue after their show Sunday at Babylon Music in the city has taken an extended long weekend, but everything picks right up again come Wednesday. dial613's local pick o' the week is Wednesday night at Maverick's, where you can catch an all-local bill that includes plenty of experimentation : The Bridegroom work with indie-altrock, and Liar's Rosebush with some deep electronic beats. Also, Danny Michel will play two sets at The Black Sheep Inn, despite all of dial613's [...]

Is the Boss over the hill? Dan Bern thinks so. You know the story about Woody Guthrie on his death bed handing over the reigns of the folk movement to a young Bob Dylan? This song by Dan Bern (from the album Smartie Mine ) suggests that Bruce Springsteen ought to do the same with him. Talkin' Woody, Bob, Bruce & Dan Blues In fact, he goes so far as to imagine breaking into Springsteen's house in the middle of the night: [...]

I realized two things the today: I haven’t blogged about Dan Bern in a while nor have I done much digging. This resolves both issues. If you know Dan, you’ll love these live versions. If you don’t pick a few (*) and see whatcah think. Disc 1 1 Greatest Thing That Man Has Ever Done 2 The Torn Flag (based on poem by Pete Seeger) 3 One Thing Real * [...]
