Introducing...Dan Black What happens when a DJ takes two hits and mashes 'em? That's what Dan Black did: fusing the ubiquitous beat from "Umbrella" with heavily chopped-up samples from the film soundtrack of John Carpenter's "Starman", Dan audaciously decided to cover one of the holiest scriptures of hip hop: "Hypnotize". By bending Biggie's brutal, braggadocio, mouth-twisting flow over his own aching, passionate melody, almost miraculously, he transformed the ultimate rap brag into a deeply heartfelt, bittersweet epic. "HYPNTZ" is the first offering from Dan Black. In a quest to meld [...]

Ever heard of a band called The Servant? Unless you`re from France, there`s a good chance the answer is no. I stumbled across their former frontman and creative force, Dan Black, the other day and was pleasantly surprised. Still in the early stages of a solo career, Black is emerging at a time when one man pop production houses bedrooms are becoming common (Primary 1, Calvin Harris, Esser, Samuel Dust, Jeremy Warmsley to name but a few on the tip of my tongue.) In this techno-savvy era where anybody can construct a studio [...]

"HYPNTZ" was my first upload from Dan Black. He re-interpreted The Notorious B.I.G. hit with a lost 80's sci-fi soundtrack - this Paris-based, English exile created something nothing short of brilliant. He will be debuting "HYPNTZ" next week August 25 as a white-label and below is a new track that I'm offering... just because :D "These Things Take Time" | download And for those of you who have no idea [...]

After the success of the single 'HYPNTZ' (which I posted here a month or so back, you can still download it), Dan Black is releasing an entire album of his excellent sampling. Dan was recently featured on the Zane Lowe radio show, so if that's not a sign of things to come, I don't know what is. This guy could be massive! The album HYPNTZ will be released on August 25th, so not long to go now. But to whet your appetite for it, here's another tune taken from it, 'These Things Take Time': [...]

Dan Black was born in London and now resides in Paris. He decided to cover Biggie Smalls' classic Hypnotize and was able to shed an entirely new light on the song. With musical melodies written for the hook and verses the song plays as an epic pop song rather than one of the most noted hard rap songs in history. Check it out: MP3: Dan Back - Hypntz (Biggie Cover)
Skinny, white Londoner covering his polar opposite The Notorious B.I.G? Blasphemy? No, an act of bravery and genius. Now I don't have much love for Biggie Smalls but 'Hypnotise' is pretty cool and the video (check the embed below) is a cinematic masterpiece compared to the typical performance video I see these days. But Dan Black utterly transforms the track - recycling the beat from 'Umbrella' and adding ethereal samples from John Carpenter's 'Starman' soundtrack. Dan's despairing vocals mean 'HYPNTZ' isn't just an homage to Biggie but instead a glowing tribute. A beautiful, timely reminder of [...]

I'm not going to go into much detail about any of these songs. Suffice it to say I like them. I've been working so much these past couple of weeks that I haven't had time to research and investigate the way I'd like to, but you know the story--if I wait to do it properly I'll never get around to it. So here you go. Dan Black -- "HYPNTZ" mp3 off his upcoming 7" HYPNTZ Single A mesmerizing remake of Notorious B.I.G.'s song "Hypnotize." [...]
Dan Black used to be the singer in The Servant who were big in Italy and France. He also sang vocals for the dance project Planet Funk. Now he has covered Hypnotize by Notorious BIG and it's a lot of fun. There are three other related tracks I want to post but right now I'm having troubles with mp3 so here's a link borrowed from the excellent Pinglewood blog which was first on this. Dan Black - HYPNTZ (not on iTunes yet)
"Jackson Leftfield" - Boxer the Horse Jaunty, nicely textured indie pop from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, of all (beautiful) places. Harmonica, acoustic guitar, synthesizer, and an intermittent electric guitar intermingle with uncanny merriment, while singer/guitarist Jeremy Gaudet exudes an amiable sort of lazy energy, sounding something like Ray Davies fronting a jam band (minus the jamming). This is music that makes you smile, as well as tap your toe. The harmonica brings you into the song and immediately makes me wonder: what happened to harmonicas? Outside of an [...]
I have no idea how to pronounce that if it's not actually "Hypnotize". Words with no vowels confuse me. Like the Welsh language. And the Welsh accent. And a lot of things about Wales. Although Oakwood is there, that's pretty cool. And a lot of us would have went to Pontins in Prestatyn when we were younger - I did anyway! Dan Black is a Londoner, not quite Phil Mitchell, but a Londoner nonetheless. You can hear it in his music. Black was a DJ originally, but has now decided to branch into making his own music. [...]

London-born and Paris-based. Funny and genius. Dan Black has a brand new white-label limited single featuring two songs you may recognize, 'HYPNTZ' / 'These Things Take Time' - the single is just a taster of where Dan's at before he starts releasing his own material... Dan's words: "I knew what kind of music I wanted make, but at first I found it hard to get these conflicting desires to blend well outside of my head. I'd been making these weird remix/mashups for my occasional Djing, so I thought, I'll take the method I've [...]
Dan Black is an unsigned hip hop/dance artist. Born in London, England but now based out of Paris, Black sites a set of influences as diverse as Jay-Z, Sigur Ros, and 80's soundtrack music. Black recently released his debut single, the infectious HYPNTZ. We are lucky enough to be able to bring you the MP3 of that track here DOWNLOAD Check out more from Dan Black before the masses do at: www.myspace.com/danblacksound

Back in August '05 I posted the original of this tune and I gotta say that Dan Black does a pretty interesting job on covering this classic. Born in London but based in Paris Dan Black is unsigned and has just released this as a white label. As said by Mr. Black himself: " I knew what kind of music I wanted make, but at first I found it hard to get these conflicting desires to blend well outside of my head. I???d been making these weird remix/mashups for my occasional Djing, [...]

Dan Black , le chanteur charismatique de The Servant ("Orchestra", "Cell"), se lance en solo. Il était à la fondation Cartier pour l'opération "How far would you go for Love?" de la même marque. [...]
"Escargot, my car go, one sixty, swiftly. Wreck it buy a new one, your crew run run run, your crew run run." It takes a brave man to tackle these words and Dan Black is that dude. Here he turns Poppa into pop-soul and piles on the bombast. This will soon be the sound of everywhere.
