Twice a week, instead of grading papers or putting my children to bed, I hunker down in front of the computer for a 3-4 hour writing session. Sometimes I start from notes, written on scraps of paper up against the steering wheel; other times, I start with the music, perusing artist catalogs, skimming songs collated by theme and subject over the years, willing inspiration to fall out of the sky. And once in a while, it's just me in the dark, with a song to start with, trying to figure out what sort of framing device [...]

I had planned to post a huge survey of new and upcoming tribute albums from the folkworld here in this space today, but after a week of bedside Zen , Sunday's late-night sociopolitical rant , and a full-bore reentry into teaching and town business meetings, exhaustion seems to have caught up with me. I'll be working on that tribute post throughout the week, and hope to have it up on Sunday at the latest. But in the interest of deadlines, and because the ol' brain is really not up to much [...]
Allow us to be the 72nd website to remind you to VOTE! And for all you non-Americans, thanks for putting up with the entire internet's insanity over one wacky and hopefully historic election. ANYWAYS regardless of who you're rooting for (cough*OBAMA*cough), enjoy this song titled after what you probably be tonight... Drunk on Election Night - Dan Kelly and the Alpha Males
Drunk On Election Night – Dan Kelly and the Alpha Males I had always liked Dank Kelly's music, but when I saw him live it was great. His friendly personality really brings out the hilarity in his music. If you get a chance to see him, I'd highly recommend it. 7/4 (Shoreline) - Broken Social Scene I never really embraced Broken Social Scene like many, but that's not to say I don't enjoy them. When I heard this song recently I knew it was time to put [...]
I'm sad to say that the time has come for me to finish the particular series....For now. It seems you'll have to get high on your own supply of music for a while. But fear not, I'm not plunging you completely into darkness for there is a faint light at the end of tunnel and that light is my next series. So until then....er....hold me now? Anyway back to normal speak, I'm taking a break for a while in order to build up some new songs. Basically the musical world doesn't pump out good music at a rate fast enough [...]
I had not realised that Gareth Liddiard, leader of The Drones , was once part of The Alpha Males (bassist). Just another interesting bit of information that adds to the charm of Dan Kelly and his band. By now you would know that Triple J have been pimping the new record, "Drowning In The Fountain Of Youth", with an album of the week status, and a nomination for the J Award . Comparisons to Steve Miller aside, what attracts me to the songs is the clever lyrics and the exquisite harmonies. [...]
