I may have mentioned it here before, but making mix tapes is one of my favorite hobbies. At some point during high school, which I mostly found unbearable, I distinctly remember thinking that I had all these great sad songs, but they were spread out over too many different albums. Why not combine them into one powerful tape of self-loathing? Seemed a great idea at the time. I don't know about anyone else, but when I'm feeling down, I just can't stand upbeat music. I'd rather play something that echoes my mood; it's always done a much better job of [...]

So what are you doing tonight in Calgary? I am looking to see 3 artists (at least) today at the Calgary Folk Fest. The festival was once again nice enough to outfit yours truly with a media pass, so I will be taking photos, listening to great music and overall just being folky. The 2012 festival artist line up is once again stellar with a full selection of up and coming local acts (newly formed Reuben and the Dark anyone?) to the soon to be Canadian Folk icons (Dan Mangan anyone?) to Festival alumni like Iron & Wine [...]

Liam Maloney And then there were ten. Yesterday, atop the roof of the Drake Hotel amidst record-breaking heat, the short 2012 Polaris Music Prize short list was announced, dashing the hopes of thirty artists and allowing ten others to begin imagining just what they might do with the $30,000 prize that awaits one of them (the correct answer being: gold plate all of the things). And it's an interesting group, to be sure. Some will complain about the lack of a francophone artist - which also surprises me considering the number [...]

I'm not sure why I'm bothering with this exercise in futility, save for the fact that I'll be away on vacation by the time you read this, and won't be returning to write new posts until well after the dust has settled on the Polaris Music Prize Short List for 2012. It's been a polarizing Polaris year for me, probably one of the hardest I've participated in yet. There's been a wealth of "good" records from the 2011-2012 nomination year, but for my personal taste, there's been little in the way of "great" records [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Ethan Miller, Getty | Mark Davis, Getty Although they've yet to lure the Phoenix Coyotes to their crumbling Colisee, the otherwise beautiful Quebec City seems to have no trouble bringing in grade-A American music heavyweights to play their annual Festival d'été de Québec , happening this year from July 5 to 15 at the Plains of Abraham and other spots around town. [...]

Yes, more indie folk sounds! :/ To be fair, Dan Managan 's take on this apparently most favorite genre with Polaris jurors isn't strictly the same ole'. Many of the tracks have a layered, orchestral feel with horns and instrumentation that lend some of them an anthemic feel. Breaking up what is rapidly becoming a monotonous listening experience for me in this way is appreciated, but it doesn't quite add to me being excited enough about this album to consider it a real short list contender on my ballot. 2012 Polaris Music Prize Big ups to bumpershine favorites Dan Mangan, Rich Aucoin , and Great Lake Swimmers who are just a few of the fine artists on the 2012 Polaris Music Prize long list. For those of you not in the know, The Polaris Prize is a $30,000 cash prize awarded annually to the Best Canadian Album judged solely on artist merit, without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation, or sales history. The Short List, comprised of 10 albums, will be announced in Toronto on [...]
Filed under: News , Awards , Music Appreciation Upper Class | A&C | Secret City The fight to determine the best Canadian album of 2012 based on artistic merit has officially begun. With most of the Canadian music industry setting their sights on Toronto's NXNE , organizers of the now seventh annual Polaris Music Prize instead announced its 40 Long List nominees today at the Waldorf Hotel in Vancouver, BC. And [...]
Lane Meyers Have I been waiting for this for a while? You might say that. Ever since Evening Hymns' debut album of gorgeous folk-pop Spirit Guides made my 2009 year-end list , I've been eagerly anticipating its follow-up, following along on their Tumblr as it was recorded in early 2011 and keeping an eye for its expected release date of that Fall. I even had a spot on this year's Polaris Prize ballot reserved for the record, dubbed Spectral Dusk as early as last [...]

With the festival season beckoning, the seasonal weather up north has brightened up as some of the brightest upcoming stars look to start their summer crawl on Saturday the 5th of May at Live at Leeds , the same weekend as Camden Crawl and ahead of other upcoming major city festivals. With this 1-day line-up arguably looking stronger than the London weekend this year, it’s difficult to see why you wouldn't drop up for the day, especially with so many bustling venues in the Leeds city centre within a short walking distance. Beginning [...]

Words: Simon Opie I know next to nothing about Dan Mangan except he’s from Vancouver, which I’m told is a great place to live, and his 2011 album 'Oh Fortune' is amazingly well put together. This song was one of my top tunes of 2011 and hey – there’s a new video release for it and that’s a great excuse to introduce it all over again. Mangan is aided [...]
Vancouver's Dan Mangan latest record, Oh Fortune , may have been released late last year, but still makes a regular appearance round these parts. So when we heard Mangan and his bandmates were in town we tracked them down, requesting a track in a serene setting - they gracefully obliged, check this special performance.

Trying to determine "the best" album of the year is always going to be an exercise in subjectivity, and well it should be. You can assign points for technical proficiency, and set all kinds of arbitrary criteria as if this was a figure skating competition, but even at the Olympics, they're looking at artistic impression. In my year-end columns, I always stress that I'm very uncomfortable saying my choices are "the best" records of the year, deferring to the old stand-by "favourite albums" tag to define my choices. Being a Polaris Music Prize [...]

Jim Anderson My first encounter with Cold Specks wasn't a terrific one. Though opening up a sold-out show for St. Vincent in one's hometown as Al Spx did last December would seem as ideal a scenario as one could hope for, the reality was decidedly less so. Despite having already accumulated some overseas buzz with a couple singles, Cold Specks as a seated, two-guitar duo had trouble holding the attention of the audience with her low-key, self-described "doom soul" though those of use close enough to the stage to feel [...]

John Londono I didn't study a whole lot of history in school - to my regret - and the topics I did cover didn't include the War Of 1812. I did, however, take a lot of math courses so I am able to calculate that this is the 200th anniversary of said conflict between the then-British territory that would become known as Canada and the newly-independent United States of America. The precise causes of the war aren't entirely clear to me but based on the musical events being scheduled at Toronto's Historic Fort [...]
by teepoo This video by Dan Mangan is rather weird and confusing, but it's one of my favourite songs off Oh Fortune .

Tweet Despite winning the 2011 Juno Award (Canada's version of the Choice Music Prize) for his 3rd LP 'Oh Fortune' word of Dan Mangan's near infinite talent hasn't spread as far and widely as expected on this side of the Atlantic. Probably a minor delay on his road to superstardom though because the kid is able to produce gold from base ingredients. You think there isn’t much happening but his subtle jigsaws are adept at coming together at the least expected moment. [...]
Dan Mangan - Post-War Blues

Frank Yang It's basically a given that the songwriters who pen the saddest songs also have the wickedest senses of humour, right? I have no quantitative proof to support this - only anecdotal - but if I were to start assembling some scientific proofs in support of this hypothesis, I'd certainly include Rose Cousins' show at The Rivoli on Thursday night in the lab report. It was a record release show for her third album We Have Made A Spark - the gorgeousness of which was saluted hereabouts [...]
