Hello, all. What's shakin'? I've been burning the midnight oil to get through the last of the summer releases. This is the best of the lot. A little something here for almost everyone. I'll be back soon with a few surprises. As always, thanks for reading. Out... AMH Film School, Fission (Hi-Speed Soul) On this album the atmospherics of San Francisco's Film School (Greg Bertens/Lorelei Ployczyk/Jason Ruck/Dave Dupuis/James Smith) p...

It feels as if I've been writing and rewriting this review in my head for weeks now, as I was fortunate enough to get an advance copy of Oh Fortune last month. Now, sitting down to figuratively put pen to paper ("fingers to keys" just doesn't have that same ring about it), my thoughts are disjointed, incomplete, hazy and fuzzy with bursts of clarity, which, by the way, is the complete opposite of what Dan Mangan has done on his third-and best-album. Oh Fortune finds Mangan's heart [...]

This week we have another always enjoyable selection of the finest indie music being released all over the world. I'll go out on a limb and say that Dan Mangan's new album Oh Fortune is one of the most anticipated Canadian indie releases of 2011. The buzz around the BC-native has been constantly growing over the past couple of years, to the point of almost hysteria. So the question is whether the album, out September 27th, lives up to the expectations. Fans will be happy with the structure of these songs

Rachel Lee Tentcher It was just a couple nights ago that the cream of the Canadian music crop was honoured (one twenty-eight thousand times more than the others) at the Polaris Music Prize gala, but with those (mostly) veteran acts having gotten their moment in the spotlight, what say we take a look at some local talent that's a little closer to the grassroots level? In particular, the roots of the grass up in Newmarket, 'round the north end of Toronto around where the 905 begins to give way to the 705. [...]
Dan Mangan 's Oh Fortune comes out next week via Arts & Crafts but for now, it's currently streaming on Exclaim.ca. This is a follow up to his 2009 Nice, Nice Very Nice album. After listening to it all morning I realized that Dan Mangan is Canada's answer to Mumford and Sons. His voice is strikingly similar to Marcus Mumford- not only that but with tracks like Post-war Blues, you get that eager rhythm [...]
The sunshine liked Friday at End of the Road so much it showed up for the Saturday too. Geordie songstress Beth Jeans Houghton doesn't really need the sun, having instead an impressively large band, but at least it helps remind everyone that they're not back in rainy Newcastle. Superb recent release 'Dodecahedrons' makes a welcome appearance with its glockenspiel and airy, Kate Bush-inspired vocal present and correct. Epic Danes Treefight for Sunlight take their '70s soft rock influences to [...]

I know I haven't had a New Music Tuesday in forever, but (a) the blog has been on hiatus due to vacations and a lack of power at my house from a hurricane (in inland New Jersey!), (b) I've had an ongoing foot problem that has otherwised occupied my time and (c) I haven't actually listened to much new music in a while because I haven't had time to due to (a) & (b). I'd say the only new album I've listened to the last month is Beirut 's brilliant The Rip Tide , for which I share [...]

From September 7th to 11th, music obsessives in Portland, OR trekked between 21 venues to see nearly 200 bands, fighting dehydration, worn heels, and sticky wristbands, all for the glory of Musicfest NW (MFNW). What were the highlights? Every person will give you a different answer. Was it Seattle radio station KEXP's free day shows at the Doug Fir including the Horrors, Sebadoh and the Antlers? Watching the sun set with Band of Horses, Iron & Wine, or Explosions in the Sky outdoors at Pioneer Square? The Thermals stagediving and blowing out their amp at the EMP Backstage? Legendary [...]
Dan Mangan - Follow up to 2009's exceptionally fine Nice, Nice Very Nice continues the Vancouver songwriter's steady shift from acoustic-wielding folk singer to burgeoning indie alt-pop-with-an-edge artisan...the tales are as witty and sharply etched as when he started out but the colorful creative palette in the studio has grown significantly...Mangan calls the experiences of the past few years as "life changing stuff" // Release : Oh Fortune (September 27, Arts and Crafts) // Sounds like : the ambitious new project picks up Nice -ly where the last [...]
Folk crooner Dan Mangan has gained a following in his native Canada for his catchy melodies and clever lyrics...
Today Barry-Sean and I head off, pop up tents in tow, to the marvellous End of the Road festival in lovely Dorset. Once again sold out, last year's inaugural trip turned into the best festival visit we've ever had, and we're looking forward to more of the same over the next few days. Even the weather forecast is good! Once again we have a huge number of superb bands scheduled to play and to follow our free Truck Festival Mix (RiP) and our Wilderness Festival Mix , here's the third and final instalment - [...]
Lana Del Rey - "Video Games" (Not keen on the video, or her in the video rather, but the number of times I played this song this month is embarrassing) Gem Club - "Twins" Lemolo - "On Again, Off Again" and "Fort Warden" Dolorean - "Don't Leave Town" Boyfriends - s/t 7" Keaton Henson - Metaphors 7" Cumulus - s/t [...]

Blind Pilot Photo : Ben Moon Hey folks, exciting news! Blind Pilot 's new album, We Are The Tide , is currently streaming at NPR.org/firstlisten in advance of its September 13 release date. Their debut record, 3 Rounds And A Sound , was undoubtedly one of my favorite albums of 2008, so I could not be more excited for this new LP. In addition, to the pre-release NPR stream, the band is currently offering the [...]

Brass Banda Moss have one or two extremely catchy songs, and now and again their music moves away from its normal feel of polite, ordered restraint into an infectious, beat-laden roar. That's when they're good. There's no doubt they have something that could make them really big (namely a great way with melody); maybe they need to inject that little bit of bravery to truly throw down something wild and disordered. [...]
Dan Mangan - Oh Fortune Vancouver based singer songwriter Dan Mangan is set to release his new album Oh Fortune , as well as a US tour in support of the album. Mangan's sound is that of sincerity, and on this album a sense of increased maturity. The current offering is his title track "Oh Fortune," which shines with his gravelly voice and some understated musical arrangements that grow in complexity as the song goes on. Its beautiful, emotionally driven, and if its any indication of the whole album, I think it will be a [...]
