It's not to say that the Album Of The Week selection for this second week of September has always been a foregone conclusion. This slate on September 18th is actually full of great efforts by a broad set of worthy artists, all situated in the upper echelon of their respective niches - see the laptop-enabled R&B redux of How To Dress Well's Total Loss , the tenth set from evergreen fuzzbox titans Dinosaur Jr and their I Bet On Sky , and the Killers' bold and artful widescreen mainstream American rock record Battle Born . But [...]
Yesterday, Grizzly Bear kicked off their new album cycle with " Sleeping Ute ," a tempestuous Rossen-penned gem that the comment section wanted to marry. ("I do!" - You guys.) The band's still-untitled record comes 9/18 via Warp, and it is something we will probably talk about a fair bit around here, because it's been three solid years since Veckatimest was our #2 record of 2009 . That's awhile in blogyears. But if it feels like Grizzly Bear never left, it's because they never really did. Jointly they've been [...]

Dan Rossen has always been Grizzly Bear's Earth element, a perfectly polar foil to Ed Droste's more honey-dipped ethereality, and in this video he indulges that grounded, dusty, salt-of-the-earth vibe with a cover of folk standard "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me." It's a one-camera affair against a black backdrop and the levels are imperfect, and yet Rossen comes through perfectly. It's a frame that suits him. Watch it at Vulture .
Daniel Rossen, the man behind many of Grizzly Bear and Department Of Eagles ' finest moments, and the child prodigy behind this insanely delightful Elvis impression , is releasing his proper solo debut this spring. (For this post's intents and purposes we are side-stepping his covers of Judee Sill , and of JoJo , though you really should get on that cover of JoJo.) Dan's offering an EP via Warp Records, the same label that releases his Grizzly Bear songs, with the name Silent Hour/Golden Mile . We've posted its " Saint Nothing ," and [...]

Grizzly Bear's Dan Rossen produces this MP3 from Family Band, recorded for the Shaking Through series of one-day song-recording documentaries. (Previously: Twin Sister , Reading Rainbow .) In the clip below you see primary Family members (in both the "music" and "they're-married" senses) Kim Krans and Jonny Ollsin get a little tense and confused while arranging "Again" with lapsteel player Scott Hirsch and Rossen. They found their way (like a family), and we're left with a fine example of the band's core strengths - a "heavy mellow" or ("goth prom") vibe that pits striking and clear [...]
After watching the recently unearthed footage of Arcade Fire playing a house party in 1992 and a 17-year-old Robin Pecknold covering Radiohead and Simon & Garfunkel, I thought it would be fun to collect more early videos of our favorite bands from before we ever heard them. Well, fun for us, maybe not so much for them... Read More...

Dan Rossen of Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles has an incredibly peaceful cover of Paul Simon’s “Graceland.” This is how I like my Saturdays. Start off slow, and build up to a fun night. And for those of you recovering from a crazy Friday night, this might be a nice little soothing track that will take your mind off of your headache. “Graceland” - Dan Rossen
The next single from Jamie Lidell's upcoming album finds him looking up to funk kings Parliament compared to the previously released "Compass." Spaced out and wacked out, Jamie let's us know that he hasn't toned down his soul and explodes in this new video. Definitely displaying a bit of his dual-personality in a fuzzed [...]
Many people when discussing Grizzly band, hit on the topic of which singer they favor more. Ed Droste or Dan Rossen. Personally I love Ed's haunting lyrics more. But, Dan Rossens vocals are equally as strong. Dan really shows off his talent with this stunning cover of Judee Sill's "Waterfall". It is a cover done for a tribute album for Judee Sill : Crayon Angel: A Tribute to the Music of Judee Sill . This was my introduction to anything Judee Sill. She was a talented singer/songwriter who tragically died in [...]

Yesterday afternoon found me sitting in an upper level of Coors Field with my dad and sister, celebrating Father's Day with him in the sunshine as we watched the Rockies beat the Pirates. That's what it looked like: I was reflecting on how impossible it is to feel like anything is seriously amiss in the world when I get to have an afternoon like that - yelling at the players with my pops, tossing about my feeble knowledge of stats this season (I know just enough to be dangerous), and remembering all the Giants games at Candlestick Park [...]
Singer-songwriter Daniel Rossen who has been known for great covers, Jojo's 'Too Little, Too Late' and known for writing some good songs on the side contributed a cover of Judee Sill's 'Waterfall' for her new tribute album. His cover features his signature croon and... Click the link to read more

Modest Mouse - "Autumn Beds" ; This Saturday the folks that brought us Record Store Day are bringing us a smaller Vinyl Saturday and one of the prized pieces is a 7" from Modest Mouse featuring this tune. I have to tell you folks I don't think it's worth getting up early and waiting on line to score this single. It's a weak, country tinged tune that really shows a reduced Modest Mouse. This is not the same band that brought us The Moon & Antarctica . Grade : [...]

California folk singer (and the first person signed to David Geffen's Asylum label) Judee Sill died of a drug overdose in 1979 at the age of 35. Before that, she released two beautiful, highly worth-checking-out collections, Judee Sill in 1971 and Heart Food in 1973. Grizzly Bear/Department Of Eagle Dan Rossen, though, chose a track from disc two of the 2005 Jim O'Rourke-produced demo and rarities collection Dreams Come True as his contribution to the forthcoming American Dust will release Crayon Angel: A Tribute to the Music of Judee Sill . [...]

So I think it must be the relatively cool, gloomy weather or the fact that it's been a pretty chill day (meaning I've basically been lazing around at home all day) or the fact that it's about 2 weeks from the release of Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest ; but it's been a very Grizzly Bear-centric day music wise. Watching live videos, staring at the wall while listening to Horn of Plenty , imagining myself at a Grizzly Bear gig... for about 6 hours. Gotta love the days when you are just [...]
