Date 5/26/12 Location Mohawk Doors 8pm Tickets $12 @ Frontgate Mr. J Tillman has spent many years making a name for himself with his various projects with Fleet Foxes, as a solo musician, and now with his project going by Father John Misty . The veteran and his new band will be in town this Saturday for [...]

I honestly thought by this time I would be physically and mentally exhausted from the past two days of non-stop music, walking, and BBQ pork. But I guess it was the sheer excitement from what this specific day had in store that kept me going. My feet were already starting to hurt though, despite bringing comfortable shoes. That's my major problem with this festival; people will tell you to wear comfortable shoes but you could be wearing those ugly Bare Foot Sports Shoes and by Thursday I can guarantee you'll be wishing you had a Segway to get you around [...]

Date Tuesday, April 10th Location Mohawk Doors 900p Tickets $10 from Frontgate In a busy week for our rock n' roll community, this seems like a great place to start off with previews, unless you catch ATDI . Megafaun has quietly been making a name for themselves with their gentle [...]

Thoroughly charming set from Austin-based singer-songwriter. Native to the great state of Michigan, Dana Falconberry now makes her home in Austin, Texas, where she recorded these four folk-inflected tracks. Predicting a full-length that will follow later this year Though I Didn't Call It Came overflows with thoughtful lyrics, equally thoughtful vocal layers, and an undeniable charm. As lovely as the opening "Petoskey Stone" proves, it's the gentle backward glance of "Possum Song", a track that is as much 2012 as it...
There is a definite, appealing southern sound in Dana Falconberry 's inflections and aesthetics. She wears the sensitive side of Texas proudly on her sleeve throughout her Though I Didn't Call It Came EP, a prelude of what's to come later in the year. Opener "Petoskey Stone" builds on a dreamy layer of fractured, folksy arrangements and chamber pop harmonies, in large part due to Falconberry's collaboration with Christopher Cox, who provides keys and production. It's an incredibly fragile song, despite the unflinching sense of rhythm, broken into parts by a gorgeously sparse and atmospheric [...]
There have been so many notable new releases that dropped in the past week that music lovers have plenty of great, new music to keep them busy, and which explains partly why we're late with this post (this week's releases will be posted soon, but first the really good stuff). While January is usually a [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

If 2012 is really the apocalypse, we'll at least be serenaded by lots of great music as our world goes up in flames. Yes, it's another great week of new releases filled with KEXP favorites, new and old. In fact, we've long been fans of Nada Surf , who return with their sixth album this week, which according to our Music Director, Don Yates, "finds them injecting some welcome additional energy and aggression into their melodic pop-rock sound via quicker tempos and some bristling electric guitar lines." Fans needn't fear that the New York band is trying to recapture [...]
Songwriter Dana Falconberry 's Though I Didn't Call It Came (January 24, Crossbill) is a digital four-tracker that serves as something of a preview of a full length project due later this year. Like the upcoming album, most of the EP's songs were recorded in a church sanctuary near her home in Austin, TX but unlike her more recent stripped down acoustic and mostly solo affairs, Didn't Call heralds a more orchestrated and dreamy sound for Falconberry. With string arrangements by keyboardist and co-producer Christopher Cox, the revealing centerpiece track "Petoskey [...]
It's not everyday that you get to post a video. I guess you still are not posting a video... I am. And I also guess I could post one everyday, I just choose to do other stuff with my time. For example Justified isn't going to watch itself for example.
Dana Falconberry's new EP Though I Didn't Call It Came is quietly epic and ripe with wonder. This Austin based indie darling has been called on of the city's "most promising singer-songwriters" and has starred in the documentary Echotone, a film focusing on the Austin music scene that has been awarded the a New York Times Critics' Pick. The purity of her vocals and engaging presence make her live shows as captivating as a summer...

Though I Didn't Call It Came doesn't exactly roll off the tongue as an album title, but the music contained within isn't hard on the ears at all. That's the forthcoming EP, out January 24th, from Michigan-native Dana Falconberry . The album was recorded in a church in Austin, TX, and that intimate, introspective environment is definitely conveyed in the sound. Most of the songs are minimal in arrangement, letting that quiet feeling flourish. Vocal harmonies round out the program. The record's standout track is the opener "Petoskey [...]
Tuesday, January 10, 2012 Today's Quick Mention: In case you missed it, my Top 50 Films of 2011 list is up over in the film section. Do me a favor and check it out. Noah, my film-writing cohort, will have his list up later this week. And now, the end of what we missed while we were away. Enjoy. : Sleigh Bells - Born To Lose : I have to admit I thought [...]

Lots of exciting things have been happening on the home front these past couple of months whilst we've been gallivanting around New Zealand(thus the lack of daily posts). Perhaps the most exciting event on the local music scene in 2011 was the Valentiger Front Man Show - which took place in our home studio Stone House Recording . The ever-so talented Michael Knorr has started to put together videos from the show - with the always impressive Peter Fox providing the audio. [...]

MP3: Dana Falconberry - "Petoskey Stone" from Though I Didn't Call It Came , out January 24 on Crossbill Records . Anybody who's spent any time in Northern Michigan should immediately be able to relate to this song. "When I was a kid I would spend hours searching for them along the shores of the Lake, dipping rocks in the water to see if they would light up with magic shapes," Falconberry says. "That area of Michigan is so majestic and peaceful and it's been really important to me and my family. [...]

This is a great song off the new album from Austin based singer-songwriter Graham Weber . Graham is a favorite of much more well know Austin singer-songwriters (including Slaid Cleaves who took him under his wing and also recorded one of his songs). In his short time in Austin he's gone from being the opener to being a headliner (I saw him MC a show at the cactus cafe at SXSW one year). His new record is called Women . I guess it's in part a celebration and also a condemnation of that word. [...]
Though I Didn't Call It Came will be the new EP release from Austin, Texas songbird Dana Falconberry . The new EP will be released January 24th, 2012 on Crossbill Records. I vacation in Michigan each year, and one of my favorite childhood memories is searching for petosky stones at Torch Lake. My inner adolescent was touched by an artist I already love having a similarly moving experience. MP3 : Dana Falconberry - Petoskey Stone [...]

Photo by Andy McLeod. Noting that Matt Bauer (Brooklyn) and Dana Falconberry (Austin) were opening for Frontier Ruckus @ the Pyramid Scheme earlier this summer - we jumped @ the chance to get Matt and Dana over to the Stone House. They kindly obliged - even if it was last minute. And they couldn't have been more gracious and kind. The two recorded Two Songs For Sadie - a two song EP from which the first song of the session comes from. Matt Bauer's [...]
