Whether referring to fusions or collaborations, co-creations are often best digested with familiarity of the two or more components at hand. For instance, the food grapple looks like an apple, but its skin tastes like a grape and the insides taste like an apple. Perfectly enjoyable, but those attempting to eat it without prior familiarity [...]

Dandy Livingstone may not be as widely known as popular reggae icons like Jimmy Cliff and the Wailers, but he wrote plenty of the genre's quintessential tracks including the simple and enduring "Suzanne Beware of the Devil." He also helped propel the popularity of ska music with his song "Rudy, A Message To You," which reached near the top of the UK charts thanks to an updated version by The Specials. Here's Dandy's original with its undeniably catchy trumpet motif. Dandy Livingstone - "Rudy, A Message To You"

Leonard Howell known as "The First Rasta" , bequeathed the Rastafarians six fundamental principles: Hatred for the white race. The complete superiority of the black race. Revenge on whites for their wickedness. The negation, persecution, and humiliation of the government and legal bodies of Jamaica. Preparation to go back to Africa, and [...]

Monsieur Cyclopède strikes back. Aujourd'hui, il découvre comment l'absence d'un musicien (sûrement atteint de la grippe porcine) a fait progresser le ska vers le rocksteady, chaînon manquant vers le reggae. :: Justin Hinds & The Dominoes : My Mama Told Me :: [ MP3 ] [ [...]

Rudettes and dansette penned by the mahvellous Bishakh Som © 2009 It's been a lovely Friday, what with it being the end of the week and a glorious, late afternoon burst of sunshine apologizing for the rest of the day's rain & gloom. When it's lovely outside, I feel lovely inside - call me shallow, and I will plead guilty. And so it is I find myself in the mood for some old time ska. Come along, Dearest Friends, the rude girls have cranked up [...]

Regular readers will notice the appearance of ads in the past few days. I had hoped to avoid shilling out our space here, but though my expenses are small, they do add up. As you navigate the new look, I'd love some feedback in the comments. Are these ads a necessary evil, or are they annoying enough that you will visit the blog less? If you find them annoying though, you'll note in the sidebar that if you sponsor the blog for a month, the ads go bye-bye. [...]

I discovered Rudy, A Message to You like most people my age — through Two-Tone band The Specials, who covered the song (renamed A Message to You Rudy) on their self-titled, 1979 debut. In those pre-Google days (hard to believe they ever existed), it took more than a couple seconds to find out not-quite- household-name Dandy Livingstone originally recorded this rock steady classic 12 years prior. Rudy, as it turns out, is only a small part of a fascinating career. Livingstone was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in December 1943 or 1944 (accounts vary) and moved to [...]
