(Below, via his home in Athens, GA, Daniel Hutchens shares his thoughts on the life and work of Jim Carroll...) A while back I wrote a Diversions feature for Aquarium Drunkard about my "ten most influential albums." I found out ten wasn't nearly enough. I had to leave off so many albums essential to my musical [...]
(Diversions, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.) This second installment of Diversions finds us with Daniel Hutchens of Athens, GA's Bloodkin - one of my favorite songwriters, wordsmiths and rock & rollers since I first discovered his music over a [...]
Athens, Georgia's perennial rock & roll torch-bearers, Bloodkin, have a new album in the can - It's entitled Baby They Told Us We Would Rise Again. Fuck yes; further proof you can never count these guys out. Stay tuned for details regarding a label and release date (looking like late '08) as they leak out. In [...]
It's no mystery I am a longtime fan of the music of Daniel Hutchens and his band Bloodkin, with Eric Carter. I put their catalog right up there with the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Alejandro Escovedo and Steve Earle in terms of truly capturing the nuances of humanity, both the light and the [...]
The alt-country highway is marked by horseshoes and heavy boots. Add those of Daniel Hutchens to the road. Lovesongs for Losers is the man's latest, a stripped-down collection of acoustic jams that reference The Shining and Steve Earle alike. Hutchens has the whiskey-throated singer thing down pat, and his guitar work is equally gritty. It's no surprise that the record is out on Autumn Tone Records, the label side of the always excellent blog An Aquarium Drunkard (the proprietor of which, full disclosure, is a friend of mine and sent me this [...]

Part Two of our Year In Review... Part One can be found HERE. The following list is comprised of my favorite 12 albums released in 2006. Take note that this list is in flux, and could be very different a month from now. For example, last year I declared Sufjan Steven's Illinois as my top [...]

Well, collusion can be called here, but once you're past that, you should give it a listen. Great friend of and to MOKB, and hopefully you too, Justin Gage aka Aquarium Drunkard , started a record label last year called Autumn Tone . His first signing was Daniel Hutchens and the newest release is Love Songs For Losers . I was snagged when I saw Hutchens had a song called Red Velvet Cake . [...]

It seems to me there are only a couple of ways to spin an mp3 blog into something bigger and better. Whether your goal is greater profitability or simply greater relevance there are 3 avenues available to your average blogger . One way is to splash garish ads all over your page, get a few contributors and try to make your site into "Pitchfork lite" (thus losing all cred among your more serious readers), you could also go to work for the major labels as an A&R guy and maybe do some writing on the side (thus compromising your [...]

Sleepless greetings from somewhere in limbo between California leaving and Colorado arriving. True story: I am supposed to be catching a few slim hours of shut-eye before my superbly early flight in the wee hours of Monday morning, but the couple in the hotel/motel room next to me are going at it so loudly that I (and surely several neighbors in either direction up and down the hall) can't sleep. Gotta love priceline.com motel finds for the best buck. On the bright side, I now have the gift of knowing that my neighbor is a "bad girl" as [...]
Certain artists deliver material that regardless of whether or not you like the songs, you can sense the sincerity. While these artists are good, artists that maintain that sincerity when delivering great songs are few and far between. Daniel Hutchens is one of those artists. Fans will remember his work with Bloodkin, but his solo work is much more personal and relies on the subtleties that can only exist when you record for yourself. The subtle creak of strings, or small breathes you let escape when you are immersed [...]

Daniel Hutchens' Lovesongs For Losers drops today at Autumn Tone -- it's our first proper release. When Hutchens and I first began batting around the idea of working together on his next project, the initial idea was to knock out another acoustic-based "singer-songwriter" driven recording in the vein of his solo debut, 2003's LESSER . What came out of the recording sessions at Barbe's studio in Athens is an entirely different animal altogether -- and I couldn't be happier. The record plays like the bastard child [...]
I’ve been flipping through old records lately, trying to see what to save and what to ditch. It’s a funny process and some of the records I stumble upon are down right embarrassing. Some however, are hidden treasures. One of those hidden treasures is the joint effort by The Marquis de Tren (aka â€" Mick Turner of the Dirty Three) and Bonnie Prince Billy (aka â€" Will Oldham ), Get on Jolly . This EP came out in the year twooooo thowwwwsand and despite [...]

October 1oth sees the release of my Autumn Tone label's first release -- Daniel Hutchens second solo album recorded at Dave Barbe's Athens, GA studio this past Spring. You'll here more about that next week though. Right now I want to turn you on to an demoed outtake from the pre-sessions in Denver that did not make the final album. This track sums up everything I have loved about Hutchens music going on 10 years now. It's visceral, immediate, [...]

As many of you know, Justin over at Aquarium Drunkard is making his American dream reality by starting a record label, called Autumn Tone . The label's first release was a re-issue of Daniel Hutchens ' (formerly of Bloodkin ) album Lesser . Its second release will be Hutchens' new album Lovesongs For Losers , recorded in Athens with David Barbe earlier this summer and due out in October. This tune didn't make the cut for the album; if that speaks to the quality of the songs that did, then holy [...]
