I never considered self-indulgence a bad thing. Many critics always keep their high-strung arguments ever so close to their heart on the subject, but the fuss over this quality feels much too superfluous. Why must we strive to be better than our primal instincts? If artists have a romantic relationship with a style of music, let them be, dammit. There's not much satisfaction to come out of sticking our noses up high because a musician indulges in a common sonic quality, they want us to indulge too. Lets keep in touch with those emotions, beloved indie rockers. [...]
This is a very packed picture post. But it's SXSW...what did you expect? So here's a fraction of a fraction of all the musicians, madness, and maniacs from SXSW 2012.

Generally, Wednesday is when the music things get going in Austin, and Tuesday is the changeover between the SXSW festival's Interactive portion, and the full-force band fare. And yet there were bands a plenty last night. "Tuesday is the new Wednesday," is something we heard someone say. Tragically, that person was taken out to an alley shortly thereafter and beaten senselessly. RIP, guy! We had our fleet of photographers - Pooneh Ghana , Linda Flores , and Trent Maxwell amongst them - taking in sets, and we hit some ourselves. In the gallery above you'll find [...]
After three days spent toiling along the Bible Belt -- from Dallas to Oklahoma and back again; don't ask -- I finally arrived in Austin around dusk last night. And let me tell you, after six... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .

The big news here, at least according to Johnston's website , is about Daniel Johnston's new graphic novel, Space Ducks . If graphic novels by musical cult figures about ducks in space aren't your thing, there's also the minor news a new Daniel Johnston album on the way. Space Ducks: An Infinite Comic Book Of Musical Greatness is Johnston's debut graphic novel. Johnston, a long-time and dedicated fan of comic books, realizes his life-long dream of being a comic book artist with this release.

Simple, directo, [...]

Having wasted a few hours half-watching the Oscars, I can't think of a better corrective to the movie industry's desperate self-promotional ploys than the sweet intonations of Daniel Johnston. I'll take his sad madness over the sorry entertainers of the red carpet any day. Daniel Johnston - Sorry Entertainer

It's been a long haul these last couple of weeks, with new projects and courses to teach at work, and budget season fast approaching at the local school committee table. School vacation was cancelled, and the skies and ground remain dry as a bone despite the calendrical claim of New England February, leaving us grey and wan in the pale light of almost-winter above the equatorial line. And here at home, the stress is sky-high, thanks to an unfortunate incident at the beginning of the month that turned us into a single-car family struggling to make ends and [...]

Taking in a show at the Masonic Lodge located within the famed Hollywood Forever Cemetery is always a treat. It's a small room seating roughly 200, with tall ceilings, two hanging chandeliers and seated cushioned benches to the side. To keep it a little more hip, the walls feature film posters like A Clockwork Orange, [...]

Daniel Johnston has announced that he'll be heading to Brighton this Spring for a special show at St. Bartholomew's Church. The show, which takes place on April 16th, is hosted by those folks over at One Inch Badge, who've promised that the legendary figure will be supported by some 'very special guests'. We assume the show will form part of a European tour, though no details have been announced yet.

Tweet Victor Florence 's " Winter " showcases everything that's right, and everything I love, about music. There is no tracking, no over-processed "Traditional" sounding vocals, just a song that's delivered with amazing clarity and purpose without anything being sold... You get a valid image of Victor Florence while listening to this song, each line passive and clear and perfect. This whole "no monsters, no magic" style carries a lot of weight with me.
