If I haven't bombarded all of you enough with how much I love OFFICE , than you'll be happy to know that the Chicago quintet have put up a brand new cover of Daniel Johnston's "Walking the Cow" off his 2006 album Welcome To My World . It's such a great cover and shits all over the original in my honest opinion. You'll never hear indie-pop so good and sharp like this, so I suggest everyone get on the bandwagon now before it's too late. Check out the track below, [...]

So many shows, so little time, and never enough money it seems. You won't want to miss any of these if at all possible though. All of these guys are coming through Nashville, for the local readers, but they also happen to all be on national tours, so don;t feel left out. Daniel Johnston tour Dates Ted Leo tour dates The Mooney Suzuki tour dates Peter Bjorn and John tour dates Gillian Welch tour dates Rufus [...]

There's something distinctly surreal about oldage recording techniques of the past decades. What came before the 90s was production that relied solely on (physical) tape recording and systems wired entirely in analog fashion. This is now a mainstay to what is most often seen as the 'indie' sound. While that's not to say that indie artists should strive to be lo-fi, rather this quality is still present as a result of low-budget sound engineering (or, even because some producers/studios insist on it, ala Montreal's very own Hotel 2 Tango ). Like Sam Beam [...]

"I'm walking down that empty road/ But it ain't empty now/Because I'm on it" Daniel Johnston is the type of artist who needs covers. He has a bizarre, grating, child-like voice that takes a while to warm to and a short time to grow tired of. He can barely play guitar, and his best music was recorded in his garage using tape decks. Despite this, Johnston is unquestionably one of the most talented and influential songwriters to ever live. Ex-girlfriend (sort of) Kathy McCarty explains her [...]

DOWNLOAD: Daniel Johnston - Impossible Love (MP3) Sorry for the last minute notice on this one. Daniel Johnston is playing a private acoustic performance tonight in SOHO in NYC (May 23). The event, which will also have some of Daniel's artwork on display, runs from 7-9 pm. It's invite-only, but I have two pairs of tickets to give away to two people who email BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM right now ( subject: Daniel) and tell me what famous rocker wore a Daniel Johnston [...]

I was fortunate enough to see the legendary songwriter Daniel Johnston perform a week or so ago, and now I feel my life is complete. I had heard of him many times but it has been only within the past year or so that I have listened to his music and subsequently seen the documentary film about his life, The Devil and Daniel Johnston . The more I've listened to his songs the more I have grown to love them. I wasn't quite sure what to expect going to see him live other than this could quite possibly be [...]

DOWNLOAD: Daniel Johnston - Funeral Girl (MP3) Daniel Johnston played his second of two NYC shows last night (May 16, 2007) at the Highline Ballroom ( part of the High Line Festival ). I wasn't there, but I did go to the first show at Warsaw the night before (May 15). Apparently I picked the right show. We were treated to a beautiful performance by Daniel at Warsaw - two sets (one acoustic, one with a [...]
Daniel Johnston is, well, an artist. He's got a story to tell - usually about unrequited love, life, and occasionally Satan. His lyrics are very moving - they are filled with honesty and a sense of pureness. Dan told his...

There are many shows that I tell myself "this is a once in a lifetime", a rare performance of a reclusive or mostly retired artist. What usually happens is that artist will tour again and part of the uniqueness of catching her/him the first time is lost. I feel that I can say with confidence that seeing Daniel Johnston in the spectacular confines of Lake Shore Theater will always be special to me, even if he tours again. Sharks and Seals did the double duty of playing an opening set [...]

Authors Note: I am getting out of Florida for a few days to do some mountain biking up in North Georgia. Regular posting will resume on May 22nd assuming I get through the weekend with no major injuries. Last month I posted the rejected songs to this comp. To paraphrase: I am a member of the International Mix Tape Project a global community of music-oriented souls that exchange monthly compilation tapes and CD-Rs. DOWNLOAD: Daniel Johnston - Walking the Cow (MP3) To be continued....

Daniel Johnston has been called many things during his time in the spotlight, some call him crazy, untalented and even worse. Others tag him as the "Indie Brian Wilson" due to his mental issues, but amazing songwriting ability. For those that have seen the documentary on the man, "The Devil And Daniel Johnston" know that simply dismissing Johnston as crazy, is a monumental mistake. Daniel played here in the Cincinnati area this weekend, on Friday night at The Southgate House. The show was part of a big tour for Daniel, who usually does not [...]

poster done by Brian Methe Don't forget Cincy folks, tonight at The Southgate House in Newport, singer songwriter Daniel Johnston will be performing. This will be my first time catching Daniel live so I'm excited to take in a set from him. Daniel has written so many great songs that have been covered by so many artists that have a deep respect for his music. This was probably best represented on the 2004 double disc, The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered. The [...]

Daniel Johnston is finishing up a tour and I didn't get to see him. You have no idea what this is doing to me. If you haven't seen the amazing documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston I would encourage you to download these songs and hold them until you can do so. THEN listen to them, you'll appreciate them on a whole new level once you know the eerie backstory of one of the most respected and one of the most disturbed artists to ever release a record. If you'd like to see the handful of remaining [...]

While perusing Mini-Obs , I noticed that Dearest Natsthename had a chain interview going. You know, someone sends you a few questions, then you answer them on your blog or else you and your descendants will have four millennia of bad luck, your dog will get scrofula , and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will move into your living room. Anyway, I felt game for a bit of an inquisition, so I asked Nats craft five questions for me. Thanks Nats! And here they are: [...]

The final show on the road before we head back to NYC...what would Pittsburgh have in store for Goes Cube? We started out the day in Columbus and went for lunch with Emily from Necropolis. I got a hummus and vegetable sandwich with a side salad and it was delicious. Boy I really needed some veggies after a month of bar and gas station food. Despite what you might think, shopping at a gas station each day is not a glamorous lifestyle. Chex mix, trail mix, water...repeat. That's my secret for surviving consistent [...]
Yesterday I watched the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston." Prior to then I was completely unfamiliar with the guy, but had frequently heard references to his name. It's interesting being introduced to an artist through a documentary. That format is optimum for Daniel Johnston as his music is so instantly unaccessible that from one listen you might be tempted to dismiss it forever. To get into a little background history, Daniel is severely bi-polar. Throughout his life he has been in an out of mental institutions, often thinking that many of the people around him were possessed by satan. [...]
