I sent some questions over to Daniel Land, the man at the helm of Daniel Land and the Modern Painters , the band you voted #9 on our 10 for 2011 poll. Have a read on how this band that makes 'serious music' can be quite silly collecting location names that sound funny, amongst other things... Congratulations on finishing #9 in our 10 of 2011 poll of bands to watch next year. Unfortunately, we don't have a trophy or anything to give you, but please know that it [...]
Last month, we asked you to vote for the top 10 artists you thought would be big in 2011. For the band you voted to the #9 position, we head up north... When profiling Daniel Land and the Modern Painters as a New Band of the Day in September 2008, the Guardian described their music as "slow and stately, soporific and somnolent, like a sonic cathedral moving majestically through the icy fjörds of the frozen north". Not exactly ringing praise, which is a shame because I [...]

We had quite a choice of gigs last Thursday and after planning to head down to the Night & Day for Broken Records we changed our minds, realising that we couldn't pass up the chance to see Neil Halstead at Sacred Trinity Church. For starters, he tours rarely, whereas Broken Records are currently plugging away and are bound to be back soon when they have an album to promote. Secondly, Sacred Trinity Chuch is a wonderful venue and we could imagine hearing Neil's beautiful folky, poppy ex-Shoegazer tunes echoing around the hall and we just knew [...]

Daniel Land & The Modern Painters' newest EP, Imagining October , sounds like it should have been released 15 years ago. It falls nicely into the "shoegazing" genre, but not the heavy bands like My Bloody Valentine or Ride; no, their sound is quite reminiscent of softer, more pop-oriented bands like Lush and Kitchens of Distinction, the quieter moments of Swervedriver and maybe a little Cocteau Twins. Land mixes grand, heady atmospheres with tender, delicate songwriting, and it's oh-so blissfully intoxicating. The EP is book-ended by two epic numbers; the first, "Off Your Face Again," leads [...]

Daniel Land & The Modern Painters are adept at endlessly pestering me with bulletins on Myspace. Well, I guess it finally paid off, and they're now giving away their first EP here . This link will be valid for 7 days (since yesterday) or 100 downloads. All they ask in return is that you share the music if you happen to like it. I, for one, do like it so here it is. The band will be supporting Neil Halstead, formerly of Slowdive, in September. And what do you get when you listen to their [...]

Every day of life should contain moments as exhilarating as the minutes that pass when Daniel Land & The Modern Painters play. The soul-melting harmonies and spaced-out interludes charmed us so much, they became one of our Bands You Must Know . The Manchester-based group, formed originally (georgiahomeboy) just out of Daniel Land, Graeme Meikle and Oisin Scarlett, added Marcus Mayes, Jason Magee and Andrew Galpin so they could take the show on the road. The final result of all of these musicians working seamlessly together is a mesmerizing electro-ambient experience. [...]
