MUSIC NEWS - Word from Ireland is the unfortunate confirmation that we should not expect the new U2 cd this year! It was rumored for a release this fall or January 09. Apparently, the group is still writing and recording material. "I thought a while back we might have the album wrapped by now, but why come up above ground now if there's more priceless stuff to be found?," Bono wrote recently on U2.com . No word on whether the recently "leaked" tracks had any part of this release change. (see recent story [...]
Decca Records has invited you to check out the great, new cd from singer, songwriter, and guitarist Sonya Kitchell . You can give THIS STORM a listen in it's entirety thru the link below. Her new cd will be released on September 2 and was recorded with Grammy Award-winning producer Malcolm Burn (Daniel Lanois, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris) at the end of her recent tour with Herbie Hancock . Her new release is the follow up to her debut album, 2006's [...]

This is perhaps the final installment in a series of Time Travel Tuesday s that continue on the cover article of Issue 1054 (June 12) of Rolling Stone , 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time compiled by writers David Fricke, Brian Hiatt, Evan Serpick, and Douglas Wolk. Today I'm listing a few of my own favorite guitar songs that were not on the RS list. As someone who likes almost any sound a guitar can make, I have some definite opinions. Way back before the CD became the main [...]

Way back in February I made this list of albums to look forward to. Now that I have heard them all, I figured a little recap was in order. Speaking of order, I have placed them in order of least disappointing to most . The Felice Brothers: The Felice Brothers Plain and simple, the front runner for The Duke's favorite album of 2008. The Felice Brothers ∞ Wonderful Life [...]

Lots of truly great albums to be had this week, with releases from the likes of Destroyer and DeVotchka - both of whom we've covered here extensively. One album in particular that I would really like to highlight is Volume One from She & Him - the very high-profile collaboration between M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel. I wasn't too keen on listening to this early on, until recently hearing a track on NPR one afternoon and becoming instantly hooked. I'm currently listening to the album right now, and it sounds surprisingly refreshing, as Zooey is more [...]
Sera Cahoone and band today, live on KEXP 3/18 photo by Kyle Johnson Sera Cahoone rushed back from SXSW for an early appearance on the Morning Show with John in order to celebrate the release of her self-titled label debut. Like Sera, many other bands with new releases this week were showcasing their talent down in Austin, and many of them have used the festival to spring out onto the road. We at KEXP can personally vouch for several of the bands who have played before on the station - Joseph Arthur, [...]

Yes folks, it's almost that time of year again; one marked by BBQ, tex mex, margaritas, ice cold, Lone Star tall boys, and oh yes, music. SXSW. With thousands of bands descending upon Austin, March 12th through the 16th, it's helpful that the festival's official website offers up, along with the artist's bio, an [...]
There are 8 albums on the horizon that have me completely psyched . Arranged in order of soonest to oldest . Take a look and a listen: Erykah Badu: New Amerykah February 26 If you ask me, there isn't a more important female singer in the world of music. It's a double album. Plus, look at that hair. Watch her outstanding video for the first single: [...]

Man, I had a heck of a time at the gym yesterday. I was about 10 minutes into my run, feeling pretty good, too, when I went to take a swig of water from my water bottle. Well, the dang mouthpiece came off in my teeth and the bottle went flying, spilling on the treadmill and onto the floor behind me. I had to hit the stop button and get off, sop up the mess and wipe down the treadmill and the one next to me--thank god there wasn't anyone on it at the time. It really disrupted my flow. [...]
...and some folks, when called upon, cannot name you the titles of their favorite films. I am not one of those people; as for me, when it comes to the last ten years, or so, the answer is unequivocally Billy Bob Thornton's Sling Blade, followed closely by David Gordon Green's All The Real Girls; [...]

For the record, let it be known that this is my first post using my brrrrrrand new, custom-built desktop computadora . I forget just how long it has been since I got my old one, which I once thought was as great as a computer could be, but it has certainly been at least six years, maybe seven. How things change. Hopefully 2 Gigs of memory and a dual-core processor will be able to keep up with the growing size of programs and resource requirements of virus protection for a while. Dang, does it ever [...]

Continuing our volume-themed soundtrack quest, we got the music from one of my all-time favorite TV shows. Hope this brings back some nice memories for you (as it does for The Duke). We miss you Chris in the morning... I finally picked up my first Daniel Lanois solo album. Every time I've heard his solo stuff I've been drawn to it: spare, atmospheric, and rich. Lanois, of course, is the producer extraordinaire behind U2, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, and scores of other artists. From 1988 to 2001, he set up shop in Kingsway Studios on Esplanade Avenue in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Here's a taste from Shine , his 2003 release. Bono joins him on this one. It was written during the All You Can't Leave Behind sessions. [...]
Welcome to the 100th post of Quick Before It Melts . To celebrate this special occasion, and mark the first joint contribution between us, we thought we would look at the unsung heroes of the recording world, the folks behind the studio control panel responsible for making some of our favourite artists sound as good as they do. Who are they? What have they done? Who would we like to see them work with in the future? You're about to find the answers to those questions and more. Without further ado, we introduce... [...]
