Working in music the last few years, I've had the chance to collaborate with really incredible people behind the scenes: filmmakers, engineers, graphic designers, writers - those individual's whose art it is to facilitate art. I've often wondered how they got to where they were. I had the opportunity to sit down with La Blogotheque filmmaker Derrick Belcham before he sets off en route to make a La Blogotheque HQ in New York. We met in a Toronto diner to discuss how he got to be where he's at, what Jeff Tweedy smelled like up close [...]

Photo by Eric Ashleigh For this month's Key Studio Video Session, we profiled mewithoutYou , the Upper Darby-bred experimental five-piece that bridges the divide between raw, introspective punk rock and lush, Neutral Milk Hotel-esque indie symphonies. This year, they celebrated ten years as a band, and in the spring they plan to release their as-yet untitled fifth album, recorded over the summer with Daniel Smith of Danielson - it's their first since 20092s It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All A Dream! It's Allright . In our session, the bandmates reflect [...]

At Birds. Where I drink quite often these days. I sit down and order a drink. Thesy remarks, "Dude, you look really good. You're glowing!" Uh…really? Are you sure I'm not just greasy? I guess people have noticed a change. We have this regular customer at the store who likes to say the dirtiest, most-sexually [...]

Tonight at Johnny Brenda's is a meeting of some "old heads" (term used in the most respectful way) who have helped to lay the foundation for our burgeoning local indie music scene. The Strapping Fieldhands have been sporadically performing out again since their recent resurgence. Originally creating music simply for their own amusement with no real plans of ever releasing anything, it seems like their body of work has withstood the test of time, and feels more fitting on the landscape of music scene in this day and age than when they were first written and recorded. They'll [...]

Daniel Smith, the frontman and creative force behind indie rock project Danielson, likes to play dress up. This is no secret -- he and the band have sported everything from nurse costumes to pol... How to still like Danielson after 5 years: listen to Best of Gloucester County. Seems simple enough–it's more than obvious–but without a glowing critical endorsement, it just might be something you forget to do. There's a lot of music out there. And it's true, this isn't Ships. But it is Danielson. And Danielson is, without a doubt, one of the genius music-making machines of this, our times. Don't worry about Sufjan playing banjo across the album. It doesn't mean anything. Simply put, Danielson starts off in Danielson territory, then veers into DanielsON territory, which is something more free-floating, less jaunty-percussive. [...]

Death To Anders and One Trick Pony support. ► The Naked and Famous are back for a second night at the Echoplex, supported [...]
HOUSE OF SOUND FUNDRAISER: THEE HEADLINERS , THE NEEDFUL LONGINGS, WELCOME HOME WALKER, DJ HWY 7, DJ INSTANT ONION ( Fez Ballroom , 318 SW 11th) Let's face it: Portland radio sucks. One of the few bright lights is House of Sound, an online-only startup with 38 unregulated music shows a week. Party at the Fez tonight with the garage rock of Thee Headliners, WH Walker, and just-born supergroup the Needful Longing to raise money for the little station. SARAH MIRK [...]
March was a bit of a tease. Some days in the 70s, others in the 30s... we are clearly at the border of two seasons. As we prepare for the big spring/summer releases, it is no crime to look to the past for instances of greatness. After all, two artists this month - Nicolas Makelberge [...]

If Danielson's 2006 album Ships was the sound of an excitably tireless toddler who's just sneaked into the food cupboard and eaten a bag of sugar, then The Best of Gloucester County is the same child grown up, suitably admonished for past silliness and with a freshly garnered grip on reality. That's not to say that Daniel Smith and his myriad of backers have lost their sense of fun and playfulness, it's more that they've found a counterpoint to the mayhem and are as confident and comfortable in playing it straight and low key. [...]
