Here is the second half of our festival playlist. I can't decide which day I'm more excited for. This will be my first time seeing Spoon, so I'm leaning towards Sunday. I don't know much about Os Mutantes, but I've only heard good things. Lets be honest, I'm basically excited for every second of this event. One week and counting... Did I Step On Your Trumpet með Danielson er eitt af skemmtilegastu lögum ársins. [...]

Although I wouldn't currently classify myself as a geek or nerd (I did deserve both of those titles in high school though), I have to admit that lately I've been hooked on Sudoku puzzles. For those of you not familiar with them, check out the Sudoku website . Basicallly, they're number puzzles that don't require addition, subtraction, or even calculus to solve. Instead you must use logic and reasoning to fill in a grid with the numbers 1 through 9. The puzzle is a square that is divided into 9 larger boxes, with nine smaller boxes in each larger [...]

Alright. I'm done guest blogging over on extrawack . Time to get on with VT business. The best show of the summer at Higher Ground will be next Friday night - July 21st . Three good bands for $10 ($8 in advance). With the exception of the creme stand , that's the best deal you find. The first band at 8:00 will be Portland's (ME; not OR) Phantom Buffalo . It took a little while for these guys to grow on [...]

Danielson. Listening to a soulful, peaceful, sometimes motherly, sometimes fatherly Nina Simone on the way to The Conservatory provided a high contrast compared to the Danielson set. It was an energetic night. The opening band was It's Hysterical , who were enjoyable, but sounded too similar to the next band, a much better Student Film . Check out their music. I liked their being picked as opener's for Danielson. I missed Seth(y) playing in Student Film. And then, after an enjoyable nap between the first two [...]
So, all the other blogs are posting their Best of 2006 So Far lists. Well, I did put up my 20ish favorite songs of the year, and the albums I've been jamming (*cough* Pipettes *cough*) shouldn't be that hard to guess, but it has been a while since we looked back at the month (or two) that was. As always, I suggest you buy these direct from the labels, though you can purchase them from an online retailer or your local record store . May [...]

Once again MS.com seeks to mine tracks from the best albums, and rescue tracks from questionable ones, in service of creating an unstoppable time capsule of a season's worth of music. Spring time had its hits and its misses, but there was good to be had, friends. Let's take a second, as rainclouds and crippling humidity ruin our lives to remember the beautiful days we once loved and the soundtrack filling our ear buds as we loved them. We're taking a few days off to enjoy the extended weekend, celebrate our break up [...]

Play it: Danielson Ships Play it: Charalambides A Vintage Burden Play it: Vetiver To Find Me Gone (now find it gone in Rhapsody) There has been a recent flood of great freak folk (re: psych folk ) in the past few weeks making their way into the Rhapsody catalogue. Here's three that have caught my ear's attention. The [...]

Photo by Christiaan Palladino In all the hubbub about Sufjesus and his Incredible Leaking Record, there's a folk-pop disc out this week that might actually better The Avalanche - though Suffy does play on a few songs. Danielson's Ships is weird and beautiful, carried by near-orchestral arrangements and Daniel Smith's scratchy, almost-annoying voice. You'll learn to love it. The songs certainly deserve it, even though you'll probably catch yourself expecting to hear the voice of one Sufyawn Stevens every [...]
