Last seen on 2006's Ships , its been some five years since Daniel Christopher Smith (AKA Brother Danielson or just plain Danielson ) graced the world with his off-beat and innovative music. All that, among other things, changes when Danielson readies his eighth LP, Best of Gloucester County , for a February 2011 release. Welcome back, famile. Despite its name, Best of Gloucester County is not a best-of album; the 11-track effort features all new material and an all new lineup. While a huge chunk of the Smith family still [...]

Iggy Pop ^ Photography credits: ^ = Leah Pritchard * = Ama Chana Friday Having left Glasgow at a ridiculously early hour to ensure prompt arrival at ‘My First ATP’ (Early Learning Centre™), it is more than slightly disappointing to encounter traffic issues on the M5 and miss Broadcast entirely and only just catch the closing chords of Built to Spill . Cold Cave ’s is the first full set we see, in the dark, mid-sized [...]

When The Line Of Best Fit asked me to write a blog from ATP I agreed instantly. All Tomorrow’s Parties is one of the highlights of my year. It’s basically just a chance to get really drunk, go on some waterslides and watch loads of amazing bands with your friends, maybe not in that order. So when my editor told me this blog didn’t need to be done until after the festival I was even happier. Who wants to be running around looking for wifi when bands like Boredoms, Iggy, and Ponytail are playing? Exactly. The only problem [...]

I've been trying to see Danielson for so long it isn't funny. Whether it was because of conflicting schedules, lack of funds, mini-emergencies popping up or failed booking attempts on my part, a Danielson show has never materialized for me. Until SXSW, that is. And let me tell you, it was worth the wait. Daniel Smith and company - but not famile - blazed through a set of "clap-alongs" and "snap-alongs" (or at least that's what he kept telling the crowd), making noises I assumed were reserved for the studio. Smith was [...]

Shifting sets from The Morning Benders to Danielson was like lounging in a comfortable hot tub and then jumping into the swimming pool, quite the dramatic change. I could compare the two sets apples to oranges, but that wouldn't do either one of us any good. Instead, I'll preface this review by saying I enjoy Danielson but he's like a batch of raw cookie dough: deliciously awesome after the first few bites, then taking too much makes one sick to their stomach. Danielson and his band [...]
Thanks to extenuating job circumstances the last few years, I was never able to make it down to Austin for South by Southwest. This year, things were a bit different. So instead of sitting at home, I decided to not only make the trek, but to organize, curate and run (not just put my name on) a two-day party at SXSW. Probably an unwise decision for my first trip down, but oh well. The week-long trip taught me a few things, which I'll lay out right now: 10. Bill Murray is a good actor, but not [...]
Last time we caught a Danielson show in town, the band got upstaged by a little Grapevine outfit called Mount Righteous--so much so that the writer of that review even got inspired to try out for ... Continue reading "Giveaway: A Pair of Ticket to Tomorrow Night's Danielson Show at Hailey's" >

Araba Films If there's one thing Austin, Texas needs during Spring Break, it's some live music. Particularly in the form of a day party. The past few years Chromewaves has been very lucky to have helped put on some fantastic parties with some of my favourite blogger buds.I'm very happy to announce that You Ain't No Picasso , My Old Kentucky Blog , Ultra 8201 , Yours Truly and, uh, yours truly, will be presenting Eastbound & Found , a one-day, two-stage to-do that [...]

The past few years I've been very lucky to have been able to help put on some fantastic parties with some of my favourite blogger buds. I had been vaguely aware of Danielson for some time, but didn't start listening to the band until I began my radio show on BreakThru about New Weird America. Putting together an hour on the genre every two weeks has necessitated that Danielson become a staple of my listening, where otherwise they might have gone largely unnoticed by me. Luckily, I've enjoyed playing their quirky brand of folk rock on my show for the past year and a half, mostly because they are so strange and quirky. I'd read up on Daniel Smith's somewhat eccentric Christian background, but didn't think [...]

Last year I did a list of twenty five albums, and I began to think that the rank ordering no longer meant anything once I hit a certain number. This year I thought I was going to do a top ten with a not so short list of other albums, but then I decided that would be the same thing as a top twenty five. I feel like I settled in the middle. I was able to narrow 2009 down to fifteen albums, and no short list. These are my favorites. If you haven't heard [...]

As promised, here's a recap of all the songs that were featured in the 'Your Indie Music Lyric of the Day' section since I started it a few weeks ago. If everything works out right next week, I'll have this out every Sunday. If not, it would have been because I got caught up watching my husband's ' The Middleman ' marathon ( why oh, why did they cancel that show? ) back to back with Chris O' Dowd in Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel (which was a really great film [...]
The second annual Harvest of Hope Music Festival will return to St. Augustine, FL this March 12-14, and one thing is becoming quite clear: music's most underrated music festival is quickly becoming one of music's most stellar music festivals. This year’s lineup once again again showcases a diverse roster of national and international acts, including alt-rock legend Billy Bragg, acclaimed folk-rock outfit The Mountain Goats, psychedelic rockers Dr. Dog, indie sensations Rogue Wave, UK punk band Leatherface, and the hardcore group Senses Fail. And that's just getting started. Man Man, Delta Spirit, Anti-Flag, The [...]

Those of you who already have problems with the alleged "child-like" nature of Daniel Smith's voice are really gonna hate this one. Not only does Smith sing, there are actual children on this track. If that sounds like some creepy record hipster parents would buy their toddlers for Christmas, don't worry, it isn't that. Rather, it is kind of like some wacko experimental song that Smith recorded at a family get-together the night before Christmas. Given the nature of Danielson as a band and Smith's recording style, that just might be how this went down. [...]
