I've got a few pairs of tickets to give away for next week's Danielson show at Spaceland. Opening the show will be Marvelous Toy and Soul Junk . It's been a couple of years since Danielson's Ships topped many critics best of lists. He's preparing to go back into the studio with this itsy-bitsy, mini-tour (just New York, LA and Philly). To win these tickets, email me [dukeufo at gmail] with the name of your favorite Mexican restaurant. The contest closes Tuesday at 6:00 [...]

So the shoe you see to the left is not necessarily new news; Danielson musicians were wearing them during last November's tour. The real news now is that these limited-edition shoes will be available in Fluevog stores soon and you know what that means, don't you? That means you can go to one of a handful of Danielson performances taking place in May in your fancy Danielson shoes. 05/01: Audubon, NJ @ The Auction House w/ Dan Zimmerman, Ben + Vesper, Ortolan, Leopulde and Lenny Smith 05/06: Los Angeles, CA @ Spaceland [...]

If you were to say Norwegian music scene was one of the biggest black-metal toting cultures around, we wouldn't argue with you, but we have to give the Nordic country some credit beyond the likes of vikings, metal mayhem, good beer, and a name for a catchy Beatles' song. No matter how much you may love to hate their intensely brash metal, Norway has managed to produce the likes of Sondre Lerche and Kings of Convenience , who in their stolid attempts at song writing, have managed to brand a new sound of Norwegian indie-rock. Taking some [...]
:: If you didn't get to see Jimmy Eat World play Clarity on the 10th anniversary tour for the album, then take heart. JEW will be releasing Clarity Live April 7 . :: Bob Mould played Minneapolis recently , and the Culture Bully folks were there. Won't lie, I'm jealous. :: Mates of State will be releasing Re-Arranged: Remixes Volume 1 April 14 on 12-inch vinyl. :: So Many Dynamos just added a track to MySpace [...]
"Good News For The Pus Pickers" by Danielson [Official Site, Myspace] from the Secretly Canadian release, Fetch The Compass Kids, which is an oldie, but a damn goodie. Just wanted to share something while I was fritzing out here at the office! [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
by kevin diamond Hype Filter is back, second week in a row. Maybe this is gonna be on the regular tip. This weeks selection of songs are slightly more schizophrenic, which is probably a reflection of my mind set. It's strange the changes you experience as you slowly morph from a pot head to a drunk. I'm squarely a drunk now, and my musical tastes have begun reflecting that. Less spaced out jams, more bone crushing loudness. Life's all about phases, right? Let's delve into what's been popping [...]

When an email shows up to your doorstep telling you that a Norwegian band has an album coming out that features help from Sufjan Stevens , Serena Maneesh and Danielson (also Ladybug Transistor , but they're kind of normal comparatively), you expect it to sound like middle-aged eunuchs doing Tuvan renditions of Buddy Holly and Liberace tunes backed by and accordion and harpsichord choir. Not that there's anything wrong with that. However, [...]
"Let's do it for Santa Claus. I'm doin' this one for Santa Claus." -- Tom, sending the tentpole up to the North Pole "Why do all those guys have that meathead helmet ? He looks like Tim Blake Nelson if you dropped like eight pounds of hair on his head." -- Tom, performing a transplant from the Illinois thug to the less-endowed character actor [More to come.] "And then Bryan Adams came on doin' 'Reggae Christmas' and all H-ell would break l-oose." -- PBR, setting the wild scene inside [...]

Not so hot on the heels of their breakout Ships , Danielson has released this compilation of the best of their pre- Ships output. If Ships piqued your curiosity but you never went back and sifted through their 10 years of back catalog, then this might be the place to start. There is no way around it, Danielson will not appeal to everyone. They're just too eccentric. Daniel Smith 's nasal falsetto alternates between a screech and a chant as quickly as the music changes directions, abandoning one hook [...]
Like ( ) Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours A lot of people seemed to go batkite crazy for these guys and I have to say I never really got what was so stellar about them. The album is good, but it's not the best thing ever. I liked it. Cut Copy - Lights & Music Danielson - Trying Hartz I never know [...]

Danielson released a double-disc retrospective this year called Trying Hartz . The discs feature highlights from the band's first ten years along with lots of rarities and unreleased material. Daniel Smith's squeaky vocals have always been a little hit and miss for me, but he actually explains why he uses these different voices in the podcast, which was nice to learn. What I have always enjoyed though, is the gospel choir-indie pop aspect. Throughout the podcast, Daniel is interviewed by his two daughters Lily and Ida. The girls [...]
Danielson are true artists, crafting infectious pop riddled with Jesus lyrics and an undeniable urge to smile. read more

I've had several requests to post this - Danielson from earlier this month at the Hi-Dive. The set relies heavily on older tunes, which have appeared on their recently-released retrospective, " Trying Hartz ". (Xandy did an excellent job on sound for this show, and the audience tapes will attest to!) See my "Last Night"review for the Mount Righteous/Danielson show in the DC9 . =w=

Daniel Smith has a singing voice that would make even uninteresting lyrics sound good. And a brain that makes that point irrelevant. How would you like to hear Danielson sing a song about feet? Sure Danielson are the headliner's tonight at the Granada, but it's opening act (and Grapevine's own) Mount Righteous that I am most stoked to see. This will be my first time to see the hendectet (that's 11 players for you non-Latin speakers) live -and I can't wait, as I anticipate their infectious joy will be just what the doctor ordered after last nights Q-Tip show. And because you know their disc When the Music Starts will be a must-have after you see their live show, you may as well do yourself a favor and get [...]
