Nocturnal and intimate album from the Austin based singer-songwriter. Man of Many Moons is Danny Schmidt's seventh album in eleven years. His career began with Live at the Prism Coffeehouse in 2000, which was recorded in one night at The Prism Coffeehouse in Charlottesville, VA. A singer-songwriter in the classical mold -- drawing on influences from giants such as Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen -- he's had his fair share of drama through the years, something you can well sense in...

Our next house concert is scheduled and it is with Austin singer-songwriter Danny Schmidt on Sunday, September 11. Danny has played our series once before and he is one of the few artists I would consider for a return engagement. I honestly can't name any other artist on tour who combines his literate/poetic songwriting with his amazingly subtle guitar playing and wonderful voice (plus he's a big UT football/basketball fan - a rare trait in a folkie!). The house concert is located at _________________ in Oak Park. Since it's a Sunday night doors will open [...]
Well well well, coming up on our two year anniversary here at Bob Dylan Friday and I'm still not done celebrating Bob's birthday quite honestly. 70 years old! After living the way he did, and that pesky little heroin addiction in 1966, that came out right before his birthday - this is a fucking miracle. [...]

Danny Schmidt is touring England and Wales through June and July in support of his seventh album Man of Many Moons , the album is bare-bones affair with limited instrumentation giving centre stage to Schmidt's clean vocal and sweet guitar, there are ten Schmidt originals on the album and an excellent cover of Bob Dylan's Buckets of Rain , the Austin singer songwriter is an artistic all-rounder who not only writes and records wonderful folk music but is an excellent photographer , he designs all of his own artwork for his albums and has produced albums for [...]

Right outta the woods, The Pines' live rendition of What Good Am I? brings the peculiar comfort of Dylan's words 'n' vocals. John Gorka coaxes every melodic nuance from Just Like A Woman . Meg Hutchinson's gorgeous arrangement of Born In Time improves on the original. Mama, Let Me Lay It On You (Baby, Let Me Follow You Down) transmitter Hot Tuna gives everything the Hot Tuna treatment. It's Dylan in a parallel universe: The artfully placed tracks of A Nod to Bob 2 don't impersonate the [...]

A Tree Falls Productions , our little house concert series here in rural Massachusetts, has grown since we first presented Danny Schmidt in our living room, and so has its reputation: both of the headline performers for our upcoming Spring/Summer season concerts came to us, making booking as easy as checking the calendar and saying "yes, please!" Our newest performing space, a restored hundred year old carriage house just up the road, has ample room for 50+, and for our increasingly infamous potluck meals, and we're eager to fill the house, the better to support [...]

I have a tendency to want to write about music early. Preferably weeks before it is available. Honestly it's a trait I'm not that proud of but coming from the music industry this is something that was encouraged and facilitated. However in all honesty I do like being the first to write about a band. Sometimes though a record stews and gets replayed and absorbed over time. Danny Schmidt's record Man Of Many Moons is one such record. I've had it for awhile and knew I wanted to share it [...]

No time for a full SXSW update but I did want to share these amateurish video's I took of Sam Baker, Danny Schmidt, Storyhill, Matt The Electrician, and Slaid Cleaves from various showcases. Although the quality may be lacking the songwriting and emotion behind the songs does come through. Danny Schmidt - " Serpentine Cycle of Money " Untitled from craig bonnell on Vimeo . photo: Rodney Bursiel Danny Schmidt is still growing as a lyricist. He was already damn good, but he reaches new heights on his latest album Man of Many Moons . The title track refers to his being on the road, and driving in the dark of night with the moon as a companion. He has found a kindred soul in Carrie Elkin , a fellow folk singer, but.he sidesteps the pitfall of sappy love songs. Ragtime Ragtime Blues is about [...]

There's a long tradition of singer-songwriter couples in folk music, especially in those pockets of history where you find movements and schools forming. From June Carter and Johnny Cash in the second-generation countryfolk days, Buddy and Julie Miller at the forefront of the modern Americana movement, and Jeffrey Foucault and Kris Delmhorst's marriage in the wake of their work with folk supergroup Redbird, to the doomed-but-productive pairings of James Taylor and Carly Simon in the singer-songwriter seventies and Maria and Geoff Muldaur in the Greenwich Village and Woodstock jugband era, not to mention the quirky songs of the [...]

Drawn by British acoustic goddess Laura Marling, Chris, Claire and I arrived at Club Passim a few nights ago anticipating a great show. We were not the only ones excited. The place was packed and pretty rowdy for Club Passim. Chris is going to talk about Laura Marling tomorrow, but we were are impressed by the opening act: Danny Schmidt. Schmidt, a folky singer-songwriter from Austin, TX is a storyteller. With a voice straight out of a faded black and white photograph, Schmidt spun dusty tales of loss, revelation and time mesmerizing the crowd along with his deft guitar work. [...]
The video for the lead track off of Danny Schmidt's latest album Instead the Forest Rose to Sing , which is also Danny's first on Red House Records . This album never seems to spend much time on the shelves, but instead has lived much of its life in "The Wooden Tent" never too far from the stereo (and for the uninformed "The Wooden Tent" is the recently acquired official name for my cabin home in the woods). "... you're better off broke with soup [...]

Texas singer-songwriter Danny Schmidt played a concert at my house on Sunday, fresh from his Red House Records showcase at SXSW, and the whole thing was so incredible, I'm having trouble putting words to the experience. I'm especially glad it was Danny who came to help us christen our home-as-venue. In person, he's a gentle soul, easygoing and easy to chat with, perceptive and playful, with a fine sense of humor and a clear affection for kids and the natural world around him. He made [...]

It is true, I am delving into the fray (not the band, cuz that's weird) and putting out a Sunday Mixlist. It is almost a blogger tradition to put out playlists/mixtapes/themed musical collections. I tend to try and theme some (see ladies night/men's night), but sometimes I find it a bit of a chore to "theme" a list - then you get music that you might not have ever put on a list together, but because the title matches some theme - it all of a sudden is good enough to post? But maybe that is the idea behind it, [...]
