The girls back home have (admittedly a bit late) been hit by the Mamma Mia craze and are watching the movie over and over as well as constantly spinning Abba on the stereo. So yesterday when driving down to visit the mother of the commander-in-chief, we (as always) listened to Arrival in the car. And when we reach track 5 my thoughts (as always) begin to wander back to the days of vinyl, staying up late in the weekends listening [...]
What disco hit should this bouncy Ottawa band cover? You tell them!

I've happened across the movie Caddyshack a number of times lately. It's been popping up on the Golf Channel, some "movie night" concept that has the feel of a regular program with nowhere to go. Seriously, aside from Caddyshack , what other golf movies have there been? There's Tin Cup , and I think there was a bio-pic on Bobby Jones earlier last decade, and The Legend Of Bagger Vance (which I really liked). But Caddyshack was quite the iconic flick with my junior high [...]
#4. Just like the MLB and the NFL, any artist caught using Autotune should be fined and suspended by the RIAA. | Performance enhancing drugs or performance enhancing (or correcting) software, like dog fighting, should be outlawed. "Britney, meet Lil Wayne - Wayne meet Britney..." I mean, why give someone an unfair advantage, riiiight? Spoon - The Beast And The Dragon, Adored (Mp3) Marc Bolan - [...]

Wanna know what the earliest tip-off was that something was amiss in my Mom's home upon first inspection last week? There was a vinyl record out of its sleeve among a stack of books and paperwork on the kitchen table that doubled as my mom's desk in a way. There it was, just slid into the pile of stuff. A naked LP. I went on yesterday about my mom's musical inclinations, but my dad who wasn't a musician was a bit of an audiophile in the era of reel to reel tapes and LPs. And man, [...]
So, I have a bit of a confession in regard to our 'break' last week—it really wasn't a vacation at all as was insinuated by the vacation graphic that was posted, all tall frosty one and teal ocean water. In fact, Business Week Magazine framed an article (no joke) on why we were absent from TVD HQ last week: "On a Tuesday night in late July, Jon Meyers, 42, got the call every child with an elderly parent dreads. His 84-year-old mother, Ruth, who suffers from dementia, had fallen in her kitchen and was [...]

Image From Here Well, here is the final installment of this series. I am not as familiar with some of these artists than the others posted. And, I was quite surprised to see how low Billy Idol charted for the song Flesh For Fantasy . I'd have thought that track would have charted a lot higher. The first three posts in the series are below. The 80's (as I said before) was such a vital time for music. It clearly helped define the music that we listen to today. And [...]

I'm off to Killarney tomorrow in advance of a flight to Germany from Kerry Airport the following morning. It's my second time flying from Kerry, although it's a bit of an exaggeration to call it an airport; I've seen taxi ranks that are bigger! It's the only airport I know that's beside the road and where there's more danger of stepping on cow shit than there is of terrorism. On Wednesday, I'll be flying into Frankfurt Hahn where I'll be collected by my friend Pia who has promised to take me on a tour of the beer gardens where I'll [...]

Owing a heavy stylistic debt to yesterday's duo, Danny Wilson followed up the stellar "Meet Danny Wilson" with the wonderfully flawed release, "Be Bop Moptop". Wonderful because the song writing is top-notch, as are the arrangements, Gary Clark's vocals, and the subtle atmospherics and sonic touches. (Love those rainstorms.) Flawed because of the timing...not in a career sense but in a production-value sense. These songs SCREAM full band to me...not tinny keys and often abused drum machines. (Hell, it WAS '89 after all.) But strip those away (as Danny Wilson did in a live setting--which is how I [...]
