Local stuff first, then the other stuff: ► Nice surprise in store at the Californian's residency at the Satellite - She Wants Revenge will play the opening slot, setting the table for the One AM Radio and the residents. And leading the late dance party will be San Francisco's the Hundred Days — whose video for "Sex U" seems almost too much for a Monday night. Then again, we like Monday nights. ► Sweet collection of songwriters at the Bootleg, where resident Henry Wolfe will [...]

Hard to believe that "Yes, I'm Stalking You" — the undeniable single by L.A.'s Dante Vs Zombies — was actually released digitally in 2009. The tune (eventually available as a 7-inch on Albino Crow ) staked its claim to song of the summer last year, and it's still cropping up in playlists in 2011. Owing that song and an exuberant live show, the wacky collective headed by ex-Starlite Desperation frontman Dante Adrian White has gained momentum and followers ever since with what they call their "spaghetti Western jungle pop anthems" — which translates [...]

Starting their reign of terror in the Indie music scene in September 2009, in that sliver of time, Dante vs Zombies have become surreal outlaws of the live "Sing-n-Dance-along" show by their own admission. Their first release, "Yes I'm Stalking You/Branded By Nuns" 7" now out on Albino Crow, sounds like a trippy, psychotic journey into a Roger Corman romp fest. Fun? Indeed. Groovy? For sure! These cats know how to live it up and surely their residency on Monday nights at the Echo [...]

Yes, I'm stalking you. After a long week at work and a kidney infection, I started getting back on track with the usual routine. I began by asking myself," How is the music scene back home?"(Since I'm stationed in New Mexico) The answer came from a good friend of mine; That answer was Dante Vs. Zombies . I know it can't really define all the bands out there but they certainly have set a mark in my book. Based out of Echo Park, Dante Vs. Zombies was formed in 2009 after a year their previous band Starlite' s last [...]

No need to fear, weirdo rap's been here since forever and Dante gives an interpretative breakdown for the last installment of Hip-Hop History 101. According to Ross, "Ghostface Killah gets a all-time 'Weirdo Rap' plaque...He might have been on the only weirdo rapper in a triple X shirt."

In terms of a musical genre, the label 'experimental' is a pretty safe one. Safe in the sense that it lets a band get away with anything, and offers them a chance to hone their style in front of an audience, not just in their rehearsal space. Sometimes this can go disastrously wrong onstage, but the band is always left secure in their experimental bubble. That bubble only saved two of the three bands boasting that label Friday night at Dante’s . Headliners Dengue Fever were free from questioning of their genre, however, [...]

Looking to make your Friday evening a little more exotic? Feeling like you'd want to mix your psychedelic rock with feminine Cambodian vocals? Then check out Dante's Live on April 22 to see Dengue Fever : a Los Angeles sextet that combines their native flair with the rock 'n' roll of the 60s and 70s. After stunning SXSW 2011 with a groovy, garage rock sound tinged with lyrics performed partially in Khmer, Dengue Fever are ready to spice up your (more than likely rainy) Friday evening with some of that California warmth carried [...]

What's not to love? ZEDS DEAD - RUDE BWOI (DANTE LEON REMIX)

Back in 2007, when I was still a newbie to Portland, I found myself at Musicfest NW, impatiently waiting for Spoon to take the Crystal Ballroom stage. It was the first show of the weekend, and I was so excited, I couldn't have cared less about Spoon’s openers. It was some band they’d brought with them from Austin, and while I liked their name, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears , I just wanted them to hurry up so Britt Daniel could start his band’s show. Everything changed the second Lewis shrieked, “Bitch! [...]

www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgB9yI j0c-Q It wasn't that hard to convince a friend to accompany me Monday night and catch the second round of Spirit Vine’s residency at the Echo. After he answered my call with his usual warm welcome of, “What. What do you want?” I asked if he wanted to grab a drink and see a very Jonestown-ish, droney, down and out rock band. He replied, “Sounds promising...Plus, you owe me a drink.” We arrived after the stupendous and always entertaining Dante vs. Zombies had finished their set. If you have never seen them before, [...]
