Take the line-up of your typical European multi day event, cut out the filler and the acts that everyone has seen once too many times and pack all the greatness into one incredible day for discerning music lovers. TV on The Radio, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Mogwai are just a few bands added to an already impressive lineup of local and international acts. While it might not challenge 'Fire Fire Fire' in the greatest songs ever written by Sydney band Dappled Cities 'The Price' is nonetheless a taste of grandeur. It is taken from their 3rd album 'Zounds' which confusingly just dented the charts back home in Oz. Now the antipodeans as a whole have been succeeding in upping the ante on the quality of their indie rock output but if one of their leading lights fails to register then it could result in a mere blip of activity. 'The Price' is a tangled glory, in your face epic that does its best [...]

Austin is just getting warmed up. I covered seven bands Thursday while on assignment for SPIN.com: ☛ Band of Horses played a resplendent set to a full house at Stubb's outdoor theater. ☛ L.A.'s Radar Bros. [that's Jim Putnam, pictured] playing to a packed Merge Records showcase at the Cedar Street Courtyard, previewed their sixth album (out this week), "The Illustrated Garden." ☛ She & Him continued to underwhelm me in their Merge Records performance. ☛ Long Beach quartet Avi Buffalo's star continued to rise. ☛ [...]

Dappled Cities The Echo Los Angeles, CA 3/14/10 When I was making my best of 2009 lists one thing I mentioned was that I didn't get to see a live performance from a single band that made my Top 10 releases last year. Topping the list of "wanting to see live bands" was Dappled Cities . I was thrilled when their label Dangerbird let me know that they would be playing a set here in LA on their way to their shows at SXSW. They played a very short [...]

Something of an eclectic collection for you today, which I guess is inevitable when you press that little shuffle button! I've included the location of each artist, as well as myspace linkage for further listening. Make sure you check out Hello Saferide ('Anna' is a gorgeous song), Malcolm Middleton and Sam Baker in particular. I find that Matt Pond PA track is best played nice and loud as well. Hail Mary - Young Lords | myspace (USA) [...]

I made a mistake. I told the door bitch that 25 euros was too much to see a band I'd never heard of. My first mistake was not knowing who the Local Natives were and obviously my second mistake was not taking a risk and opening my wallet. These LA dudes have been frequently likened to Fleet Foxes , and whilst I get this comparison, I can't shake the feeling that they sound like a less kooky Dappled Cities with their fast drum beat and falsetto "ooh's". So [...]
Filed under: The Hit List , Free MP3 Download of the Day With South by Southwest rapidly approaching, it's time to start brushing up on your buzz bands. Not the best sound quality but great visual of the band down under in Western Australia last month. Check out their recent Brothersport video here. The band also performed at the Meredith Music Festival Down Under with one of our newest favorites The Middle East from Queensland. Dappled Cities - My Girls (Animal_Collective_cover)
Album #16: Zounds by Dappled Cities In all the excitement surrounding the release of Zounds I never got around to writing about the actual record. So here we go. While I do feel the band can (and probably should) take some more chances with their albums, Zounds is another step forward for the band. Opener Hold Your Back uses more electronics than the band has employed in the past and has about a million things going on while [...]

Have I gone on about this track enough? I don't think so. It's got so many elements to it, one second a great bit of bass and then next second I think I hear a bit of Suede. A track like this is just the reason I got in to writing this blog, a song that without reading blogs I wouldn't have discovered and that, because of the way the music industry works, is not being played in the mainstream. My aim has always been to share tracks I like that aren't getting the attention they deserve. Sit up and [...]
Album #21: A Woman A Man Walked By by PJ Harvey & John Parish After the relative quiet and calm of White Chalk , the schizophrenic nature of PJ Harvey's collaboration with John Parish was most welcome. While there are moments of beauty on the record, it's Harvey's vicious vocal on the title track that remain seared in my memory: "I want his fucking ass." She frightens me. However, Black Hearted Love was one of my favourite videos of the year. Watch: Black Hearted Love [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive On Thursday morning, Australian indie-rockers Dappled Cities took their craft to the streets to raise money for charity. Singers Tim Derricourt and Dave Rennick of the Sydney-based band headed downtown to help give a big sendoff to the departing morning DJs of legendary Australian radio station Triple J and help out Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy in the process. Derricourt tells Spinner that his bandmate came armed with street performing experience. "I'm not a busker. [...]
