Release Date: 06.05.07 For music fans waiting the arrival of the perfect album to usher in summertime, this is it. Granddance is the sophomore effort from Australia's Dappled Cities, although for those of us on this side of the planet, it is more like a debut. After spending quite some time with this album, I've yet to settle on an accurate description or comparison, although I wouldn't say that is necessarily a bad thing at all. What these Aussies have given us is a totally original and enjoyable pop album with influences ranging [...]
Weekend drinks get me down, not while they are happening mind, it's more when the onslaught ends that the worrying contemplation begins. Some day I'll learn or else I'll have to spend my mid-weeks discovering tunes that can make it all better. Like Dappled Cities almost Lightning Seedsesque 'Fire Fire Fire' for example. And boy is this a chiming melody fest to gorge on. Dappled Cities come from
Dangerbird Records may have in fact found six smurfs, as most of the records they are boiling up are turning to gold. With the success of Silversun Pickups, the label has become a gateway for indie outfits. Despite what you might think, I'm actually ok with this, as a label you can depend on for good releases is something you should never take for granted. The latest band to stumble into the fold and reap the benefits is the Aussie quintet Dappled Cities . With the opening slot for Modest Mouse and the MTV [...]
I bumped into Dappled Tim at an Andrew Bird gig back in January. We chatted between sets and he filled Amanda and I in on Dappled Cities Fly's plans for the rest of 2007...which of course, as we all know now, includes moving overseas in the not too distant future and taking over the world one gig at a time. The following day the band hit a studio in Sydney to film a video for current single Fire Fire Fire. The video is done now and it's a cool little clip...so cool it's coming DAMN close to being [...]
Dappled Cities Fly or is it just Dapples Cities now? I have no idea, but i've been kinda hooked on this Aussie indie-pop quartet for a couple of weeks now. This came from listening to "Fire Fire Fire", one of the first singles on their sophomore album Granddance that was released last year in Australia only. Don't fret though as the album will be making it's US debut sometime in June. So expect to hear a lot more about these guys as they also raised some awareness by performing at SXSW as well. [...]

Besides being the #1 day for heart attacks (which at my age matters), Mondays just suck in my opinion. First in line is Sunday and then Monday, two sucky days in a row. It's especially bad when you are in the situation I'm in these days. Well, I really should try to write an album review but I am stuck in a swirling haze of mixtapes. I love putting together a compilation of new and old songs based on a theme or a sound. It's also good exposure to new or old bands that you [...]

Due to recent time constraints and the lack of a strong internet connection, I've been noticeably unable to update lately. Even worse, when I finally got my shit together to update last night... I had a fight with those pesky signal bars at the top of my screen who were taunting me with their little jumping dance. Needless to say, they won, and here I am scrambling to get this done beyond the last minute at work. So please forgive me for these brief descriptions today ( not that most of you read this, we all know you're here for [...]
Pitchfork published a lengthy and well-written article on the Laneway Festivals in both Melbourne and Sydney. It's well worth a read for an outsider's perspective on the Australian music scene (in addition to his reviews of the shows). Something I should do more of. I wasn't introduced to the writer, though I saw him at the Dappled private show , Peter Bjorn and John and Laneway ...so he certainly crammed a lot in to his visit. I almost let March slide by without posting our monthly windfall of totally legal and usually super-hip mp3 downloads. Have at 'em: CocoRosie - "Rainbowarriors" mp3 buy Celestial - "Dream On" mp3 buy Dinosaur Jr. - "Almost Ready" mp3 buy Dappled Cities - "Fire, Fire, Fire (DFA Remix)" mp3 buy Kaiser Chiefs - "Ruby" [...]

The five members of Dappled Cities comfortably define themselves as a band who creates "oddball pop". Oddball pop? Well, the particular specification seems to be getting more common by the day with bands like Danielson, Sunset Rubdown, and Islands all making popular entries into the contemporary music setting. With non-traditional song structures accompanied by instruments originally only found in the closets of gypsies and priests, such artists are rapidly finding new and creative ways to express themselves. Ten years ago, one would have probably looked at you quite strangely if you told them that adding accordions, xylophones, musettes, [...]

I've always had a thing for Australian music and I think it's a proven fact that bands from Australia are always more happy than American bands (at least their press photos would suggest this). Dappled Cities Fly are the latest entry into the Aussies-that-I-think-are-desti ned-to-take-the-States-by-stor m category. They already have some opening dates with Modest Mouse under their belt and they just finished up a run of shows at SXSW. I received their album last week and it has barely left my CD player since (side note: my iPod player broke so I'm back to using CD's). Their [...]
So, Augie March won the Australian Music Prize last night for Moo, You Bloody Choir. I found the album a bit dull and about 15 minutes too long, so I'm a bit pissed Gotye didn't win the 25 grand. That said, Mr. Wally de Backer did win $15,000 in a secondary prize of sorts. Congratulations to both. *** Shows shows shows. The Playground Weekender kicks off tomorrow night with some damn cool DJs (Mad Professor!). I'm not going but I am interested [...]

Beck, New York Dolls (wtf?), The Valentinos, The Ghosts, Nouvelle Vague and New Young Pony Club have all been added to the V Festival lineup. While playing times are not posted yet, by the looks of this page I'm going to have to choose between The Rapture and Phoenix (and I'll be missing Gnarls Barkley because I'm NOT missing Jarvis Cocker). The addition of Beck (while long rumoured) was a nice surprise as I figured the lineup was already done. So yay! Saw Peter Bjorn and John last night at the Metro. [...]
In the months since we've checked in with Aussie Band To Watch Dappled Cities Fly, they've apparently dropped the "Fly." We wholeheartedly approve. So, the new look Dappled Cities are finally ready to try their hand with American audiences with...
