These aren’t reviews, these are unedited testimonies and opinions about why we love what we love. I don't know why it never occurred to me not to post this sooner! "The Dark Night Of The Soul" is a short film commissioned by Courtney "you can't take the gutter out of the girl" Love. Michael Mouris has done a fantastic job of nailing Courtney's fashion evolution. It starts with Karl Lagerfeld counseling Courtney on the pitfalls of "The Kook" and continues into a dream where Courtney searches for the mystery of how she turned out so kooky. "Why can't I be dignified like Chris Martin from Coldplay?" she ponders. Self discovery and acceptance come [...]
These are in no particular order, and the only criteria that these albums satisfy are that I like them. I’m afraid that I’m not going to make any hyperbolic statements of greatness, but what I will do is run down some records that for me were memorable, got played a lot, and that I basically [...]

This year's Pop Montreal is lookin' like one for the books. The ever-so-good Said the Gramophone wrote up an excellent guide for this year's Pop Montreal. Basing this post off that and the POP MONTREAL site, I'm gonna go through what would be a pretty ideal long weekend of music and then we'll see how close I come to accomplishing it. Pop Montreal starts Wednesday, September 29th and the fun doesn't stop until Sunday, October 3rd. * Underlined shows/events are ones I will foreseeably be going to. Sometimes, there are overlaps (Thursday's a [...]

It's been a while since we gave away anything and a producer from Hoarders has been lurking outside the MOKB Mothership, peeking in windows. With that in mind, and to prevent any visits from the Health Department and/or Social Services in the very near future, we've decided to start the week by lobbing a sweet prize into the piranha pond. The saga accompanying the journey of the ambitious and staggeringly beautiful Dark Night Of The Soul to the crates has been well-documented elsewhere, and the triumph ultimately rendered bittersweet by the untimely passing of [...]

This has been on our radar for a while now, but due to complications with their record label, Dark Night of the Soul 's official release kept getting pushed back for years and thus, fell through the cracks. The story goes.... Danger Mouse (Half of both Broken Bells and Gnarls Barkley), Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, and director David Lynch got together at SXSW and conceived an idea for an album to be accompanied by a book of photos taken by Lynch. The album was created with a host of badass [...]

From the start, Dark Night of the Soul was different. See, when a group of well-established music-makers get together for those mightiest of collaborations known as 'supergroups', the result is usually either an unbaked mush of ideas (goddamn Chickenfoot ) or an affirmation of form - a reminder that, oh, yeah, this bunch of folks can still enjoy a jam (see: Monsters of Folk , Them Crooked Vultures ). A secretive project putting a gaggle of wonderful vocalists, high-strung alt-rocker Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse and subtly dark producer Brian Burton [...]

A good day for music, folks! Though probably a bit, er... past their prime, Norma Jean 's new one is probably the most significant release of note this week for Buzzgrinderers. Second up, Melvins and ISIS are doing a split single, assumedly for their current tour, which is also ISIS's last run. Another split single comes to us from Buzzgrinder faves Torche and Boris Dark Night of the Soul , the long-delayed Danger Mouse / Sparklehorse (RIP) collaboration [...]

I suppose we here at MFPP have had Danger Mouse on our minds as of late. Last week we threw the 170 track summer mix Mr. Burton compiled for NY Mag at you, and today we are bringing you a reminder about the Dark Night of the Soul project that almost didn't see daylight. After legal disputes with EMI, the project headed by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse will find its official release on July 13th.
