Dublin is known for a lot more than beer and cloudy skies. It has an amazing local music scene that is bustling right now with acts like Sweet Jane, the Brothers Movement, Hooray For Humans, and electro-pop four piece Dark Room Notes , who we recently chatted with via the interwebs. 1. Who have been your biggest influences both lyrically and musically? Lyrically we try to create ambiguous images in listeners' minds – we like to ensure that no-one is ever 100% sure that they have interpreted the [...]

Following the example of the main two Music blogs based in Ireland here and here I've decided to summarise 2009 with an mp3 mixtape. A big thanks to everyone visiting my little page and for the few comments I been getting. The hit counter seems to be increasing and the comments justify the pleasurable effort I put into the blog so again a big thanks for them! Just a little reminder that I won't be posting anything on this blog until Sunday 12th July. If you can make it to Boyles [...]

Another nod to CLuas.com for including the two JJ72 albums in their top 50. To me neither album was especially brilliant but each had some great tracks and Mark Greaney's voice is superb. They also released as b-sides some amazing covers such as Wicked Game and this one here: Pet Shop Boy's - It's A Sin! JJ72 - It's A Sin Concerto for Constantine is three Dubliners: singer and guitarist Mark Greaney (formerly JJ72's frontman and songwriter), bassist Gavin Fox (formerly of Turn, Idlewild and Vega4),and drummer Binzer (formerly [...]

Electro/Alternative Irish band Dark Room Notes released a strong album this year called 'We Love You Dark Matter' from which 'This Hot Heat' is taken from. Maybe it's the inclusion of the word Hot in the title but at times it reminds me of The Cure's classic Hot Hot Hot. That's not a bad thing! It was probably a better idea to post this track last weekend when the weather here was only glorious! This Hot Heat http://www.myspace.com/darkroo mnotesireland 11 Jun 2009 [...]

Past Ruby Tuesday band Van Cleef have confirmed supports for the album launch in The Village on Friday 29th May: The singin' and a strummin' songstress Sarah Gleeson and wild n' raucous garage rock Mighty Atomics. If that's not a reason to show up early, I don't know what is. A review of said album is due on the blog next week. When a band has made as much noise in the live arena as Dark Room Notes have, they inevitably face the age-old conundrum of how to recreate the live sound on record. Not an enviable task as most musicians would agree but We Love You Dark Matter comes pretty darn close. This highly anticipated debut from the Dublin-based newcomers comes after the success of well-known single 'Love Like Nicotine' and the EP Dead Star Program . The result of being holed up in London last summer recording, We Love You Dark Matter [...]
Having been impressed with the quality of the first two releases from Dark Room Notes over the last two years, I'm delighted to hear they have an album We Love You Dark Matter out on April 10th on Gonzo Records. 'Let's Light Fires' is a stabbing electro-pop tune, the kind this island doesn't produce nearly enough of. The chorus will penetrate your brainmush. For the album, they rerecorded versions of 'Love Like Nicotine' and 'Shake Shake My Ceiling', their previous lead singles. they play a launch gig for the album on April 9th in [...]

Dark Room Notes will release their debut album We Love You Dark Matter on April 10th on Gonzo Records. That follows two successful releases with Love Like Nicotine , and the Dead Start Program EP . We Love You Dark Matter was recorded in London in fourteen days straight in July of 2008, mixed in Dublin and mastered in New York. The band chose to work with producer Ciaran Bradshaw, who was at the helm for their earlier releases in 2007. Working with a collection of vintage analogue synths, mics and sound [...]

Todays Irish Times carried some more info about the upcoming Day In The Life festival which Kraftwerk will headline. Also on the bill for the one day fest in Wickow's Luggala estate are Soulwax , The Jimmy Cake , Boxcutter , Comtron , Dark Room Notes . The ad's headline reads Kraftwerk + Guests , so it's unclear as to whether there are more to come on the bill, but thusfar it's pretty damned good...

MP3: Mark Ronson feat. Amy Winehouse - "Valerie" MP3: Dark Room Notes - "Love Like Nicotine" MP3: Siouxsie Sioux - "Into A Swan" MP3: Babyshambles - "Delivery" MP3: Kent - "Ingenting" - Cecilia

Dark Room Notes - Love Like Nicotine DRN are heading out on an extensive national tour - including a launch for their new Dead Start Program EP, which I've been listening to a lot lately, as it's rather fine. They're also playing the Hard Working Class Heroes festival, which I'm considering going to, as the lineup is so darn excellent. Cathy Davey, Michael Knight, Leanbh , and also Queen Kong, who have this fantastic song available for stream on the site: Queen Kong - Approximation [...]
