Let's meet the neighbors, the Darling New Neighbors ! This Texas-trio has just released their second album, "Rocket" , on their own label. The music is a strange combination of rough rock with sharp guitars, folk, country and indiepop, and sometimes they take a step into the 60-girlgroup territory with sha-la-la's and shubidu's. The press-release kind of takes the words out of my mouth when they write that they hear bits and pieces of stray influence in the Darling New Neighbors: "the soft-hard derby crash of the Pixies , new [...]

this arrived in my inbox with a pixies comparison which usually results in the delete button being desperately jabbed ferocious hard with the nearest blunt object. not a huge fan of frank black. and by not a huge fan i mean i'd like him to just. stop. being. a more accurate aural likening would have been the skewed charm and stumbling ramshackle poppery of the raincoats or beat happening. or maybe even the breeders. essentially the good part of the pixies excised from frank blacks sausage fingers and allowed to wander free. anyway enough overrated rock hate... darling new [...]

All this week, I'm (finally) going through my overstuffed inbox and sorting out the best bands that sent music my way . Though this will certainly showcase several bands who deserve greater exposure, this will mainly serve as proof that I'm pretty awful at writing music reviews. If you read these and feel that – somehow – you'd like me to check out your band for possible review, head over to the Submissions section, give it a quick read, then send a shout-out to carl@theopeningacts.com . Darling New Neighbors Genre: Rock / Indie / Soul From: Austin, Texas, United States [...]

The Darling New Neighbors from Austin, TX, bring accordion and violin to the self-released indie niche market. Rocket is an album that blows up inside your skull with musical genres jumping over each other, sometimes quite a few times within a single track. They could be the missing link between the Pixies and Belly, but with a classical twist and a penchant for old time dance music. Founded by Elizabeth Jackson and Amy Moreland in 2004, the Darling New Neighbors went through quite a few drummers, before settling down wiht the [...]

How does this work: Elizabeth Jackson's voice sounds kinda off tune but it sounds perfect. It's almost what makes the music of Austin band Darling New Neighbors so beautiful. Explain THIS. Darling New Neighbors - Lilliput Darling New Neighbors - Indian Mounds These two tracks are from their upcoming album Rocket which will be available October 15 for sale online and in record stores. I love it, it's kinda Dido (ie Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O'Malley Armstrong) crossed with Camera Obscura [...]

Sunday, August 30, 2009 Hi friends! No introduction today (except RIP DJ AM and Ted Kennedy), it's all music for us: The Black And White Years - Nursery Myths It's been nearly a year and a half since the Black and White Years' eponymous debut broke to rave reviews (all noting producer Jerry Harrison - of the Talking Heads, duh) and, earlier this year, to a number of high honors at the Austin Music Awards. And then there was the hit single Power to Change, [...]

THIS WEEK'S FINDS week of Sept. 3-9 "Like a Lily" - Out of Clouds Unlike the other three seasons, which fade into their successors, summer ends with the sense of a door slamming. Everyone seems to hate it, but truly we are co-conspirators: against the reality of the Earth's steady revolution, we insist on seeing a sudden end where there is none. So okay, it may be cool and rainy, and school buses may be back on the streets, but me, I'm not going to lose the full seasonal experience, and offer a most [...]
http://www.myspace.com/darling newneighbors I think living here in the south my entire life has definitely had it's influence somewhat musically. It's sounds have molded my ear towards what I used to think i never truly enjoyed at all. Country and Folk music are something i'm really not a fan of in a general sense, but if it's used in an unique and interesting way then i'm all for it. Listening
