I have bumped this mix out like no other since he shot us the final. This is the first of many more to come. Hit the jump for the track list. & Jedi respecognition to R-Cade & the entire BevMo posse extraordinaire! BLIND I [...]
Darondo - Didn't I I've always wanted to be one of those bearded guys that wear fedoras and have encyclopedic knowledge of soul and funk. You know, the guys that can name everyone who recorded for Stax in 1962 and have a room devoted to the thousands of long-lost soul LPs they've found after spending countless hours in dank record stores searching through those dusty stacks that pile up underneath the nicely organized vinyl. That's what I want to be when I grow up. Fuck astronauts. Reality is, though, that [...]

A couple of songs for you. I've chosen Darondo's Didn't I because it fits the bill with its relaxed guitar strumming and soulful vocals. Darondo is an interesting if mysterious chap and is well worth a fuller listen. My second choice was (largely) an excuse to put in a Gif file of a dancing Jeff Bridges but it's a great song and works perfectly within the film (something the Coen brothers are brilliant at; O Brother, Where Art Thou? being a perfect example). Darondo - Didn't I [...]
"They said he could have been the next Sly Stone or Al Green. But after recording only six tracks in the 70s (and, as legend has it, after opening for James Brown), William "Darondo" Pulliam decided to throw in the towel on his burgeoning music career." Thanks to Anna for pointing out this little known festival in San Jose! The crowd was really small but San Jose's The Mumlers wowed 'em with a sweet Memphis soul sound. What is Yo La Tengo doing here? Excellent versions of "Autumn Sweater" and part of "Little Eyes". Darondo killed it with a Screamin' Jay Hawkins meets Al Green smash. Don't miss him at Stern Grove on August 15th. Gimme [...]

J*Davey, Sonnymoon, Cutso, Honor Roll, Hawthorne Headhunters, Kero One, The Park, Panthelion, Darondo, Sake One, That Girl and many more tonight and tomorrow in the Future Soul Sessions at Left Coast Live ! William Pulliam, who performed in the 1970s under the name Darondo , was a funk and soul singer that often drew comparisons to Al Green and Sly Stone. He wasn't well known by anyone except serious soul enthusiasts and he was rumored to be a pimp. However, he denies this claim. A native of the Bay Area, Darondo released three singles in the early 70s that were a perfect mix of low-rider soul with blues and r'n'b. Music had always been a hobby for Darondo, soon after the release of his three 45s he stopped recording. Darondo [...]

Check out the above video to Darondo's track Listen To My Song from his 2006 LP, on Ubiquity, Let My People Go. Darondo is looking as classy as ever and it's good to finally see an official video released from Let My People Go, which was one of 2006's finest delights. For those not in the [...] Related posts: VIDEO: Talib Kweli - The Perfect Beat Exclusive VIDEO: Mr. Scruff - Music Takes Me Up Last week [...]
Some new soul from a Bay Area legend. Maybe he was a pimp, maybe he wasn't. Even if the best part of "Listen to My Song" is when there's a close up of Darondo's feet dancing on some indoor/outdoor carpet, "Didn't I" is still classic.

Those highlighted in yellow-orange-ish will be invading this years already jam-packed Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco. It seems as though the country/folk lovers got their wish with Conor Oberst, Lucinda Williams, Avett Brothers , and Tea Leaf Green . I was pretty psyched to see Bat For Lashes up their despite that fact that I'm seeing her next month at the Great American Music Hall. Los Campesinos! fits perfectly in this line-up and hopefully I won't have any scheduling conflicts that causes me to miss their set. But this addition to [...]
New artists featured in orange. Especially stoked for Groundation, Bat for Lashes and Darondo! What...

San Francisco's second annual Outside Lands festival, to be held at legendary Golden Gate Park, has just added some big names to their already-impressive line up. Weekend and VIP passes still available on the festival website . Official lineup: [...]

It was one of those perfect autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life. - P.D. James Nat Townsley - So Sweet (I Fell in Love with God, ABC Records, 1975) Darondo - Didn't I (Let my People go, Music City, 1972) Benny Sings - Coconut (Benny at Home, Sonar Kollektiv, 2006) The Moments - To you with love (Moments to Remember, Stang, 1974) Pilooski - Love is Wet (Love [...]

(originally written for Side Dishes ) Don't say I'm not romantic or anything but as we're about to get buried underneath an avalanche of saccharin lovey-dovey-ness because of Valentine's Day, I thought it was fair to point out that, really, the best love songs are about falling out of love, not into it. New love is great and blah blah blah but nothing says passion and desperation like heartache does. That's why, for V-Day, I threw together a special Tears On Your Pillow set of songs for those who know that no love is so sweet as [...]
