If I have to attend one more holiday party, I may burst. I might have a touch of "These Are A Few Too Much of My Favorite Things" syndrome...which can lead in only one direction, likely GOUT. I will though anoint thee with an invite to attend the... visit for more mp3's & random revelations
In last month's Economist, a wonderful article was published about how apes exhibit more patience than humans, but humans exhibit a sense of fairness. It's suggested at the end that a sense of fairness is genetically coded in humans, and that it was critical in the creation of societies. Chimpanzees were nearly four times more likely to wait for the big reward than humans were. This suggests not only that the trait of patience predates the split between humans and chimpanzees, some 4m years ago, but that the trait seems more characteristic of chimps than people. [...]

For the record, Jack is Jack Penate, Jamie is Jamie T, and let's say the over-enthusiastic blogger is me. Just for example. This story starts a month or so ago with an interesting piece in February's Observer Music Monthly by ubiquitous commentator Paul Morley, in which he went on about the disappointment that can so often occur when a much-hyped band turns out to be a lot less good than first appeared. Here's a sample: "A new album or group is talked about in a certain tantalising way, but it turns out [...]
Darondo -- Let My People Go I love the DIY attitude behind Darondo's music; the audio's a bit muddy; his singing is not highly trained; this song finds a groove and rides it for all it's worth. Still, there's something refreshing about gritty soul, or any music that's not overproduced and autotuned. "Let My People Go" is a simmering political funk which I'd thought of posting on MLK day but decided not to (perhaps in a bit of unChristian judgment which would shame the reverend's memory--Darondo was a pimp. No, not metaphorically). [...]
I was completely oblivious to the greatness of Darondo before I read this post on Aquarium Drunkard . He released three 45 singles in the 70s, then stopped recording and disappeared. His rationale? " It was mostly me, just having a good time with a real good hobby...Maybe your dream is to be a James Brown or Frank Sinatra but those were just mostly dreams to me ." Fair enough. But luckily for us, Ubiquity Records released a compilation of all his tracks onto one CD last year, entitled Let My People [...]

In 2006 the Luv N' Haight folks released this nine track career spanning co llection of Darondo's music (including three previously unreleased demo tracks) and my ears have never been the same. Once referred to as a street-wise Al Green, Darondo is the real deal. As music gets more and more sterilized through technology and the like - it is shit like Darondo's rawness that brings everything into focus and perspective. I have never cared about genre and recently while prepping for a radio show and queuing up Darondo's "Let My [...]

16 ALBUMS FOR 2006 PART ONE: SIXTEEN to NINE SIXTEEN. Spank Rock / Yoyoyoyoyo [Big Dada Records] [ Buy It Here ] This album is built for the dancefloor. It's been a while since I heard beats and music with this energy, with this unabashed exuberance and sheer flair. Full of blatant sex, ass-shakin' sound and fun, and for once, you won't feel ashamed to embrace it. I vaguely remember the days when hip-hop was a strong advocate of these things. [...]

It's official. The creme stand in Montpelier is closing for the season. Sunday is the last day. For me, that signals the end of the summer. Going down there after dinner with the kids is a fun trip during the summer. I know we can always go Ben & Jerry's in town but it isn't the same. The creme stand has that old time throwback feel to it and since it's so popular, you always run into somebody you know. That never happens at Ben & Jerry's for [...]
