Best known as the former frontman of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant's recent delvings into country and folk may seem an odd choice for the seminal rocker. However, Plant's genre-crossing experiments will come as no surprise to those familiar with Zep's affinity for folk-blues - particularly their cover of the traditional "Gallow's Pole." Following his successful Raising Sand collaboration with bluegrass darling Allison Krauss, Plant teemed up with folk star turned producer Buddy Miller for his new solo album, Band of Joy . An almost perfect [...]
Last night the "Golden God" and the latest version of his Band of Joy stopped by the Jimmy Fallon show to play their latest single, "Angel Dance". I really liked this song when I first heard it, but after watching them rock it live I am an even bigger fan. Plant's voice was strong and full of energy, and the band sounded great - especially Darrell Scott's ridiculous mandolin playing. It's no Led Zeppelin reunion, but we'll take it for the time being. Check out the performance below.
We live in complicated times, in a complicated country. Oil gushes into our waters, and each day, I watch the hurricane news, waiting for the perfect storm that will lead to the destruction of the East Coast beaches in whose warm waves and on whose clinging sand I have spent so many summers. The New Orleans project which won our hearts in the months following Katrina is out of money, though it shimmers with hope on the new series from the folks who brought you The Wire . My inner city [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News It may be stating the obvious, but Led Zeppelin will not reunite and tour this summer. Not that they ever planned to, but the rumors have been persistent for the last, oh, 30 years or so. The good news is that fans will still get a chance to see Robert Plant perform this summer, as the iconic frontman leads a new band of gypsies -- actual name: the Band of Joy -- across America for a 12-city tour. Here's a quick Mixtape for your 4th of July. These tunes just seem to evoke that American spirit, whether it be love for the open country, old-time values, or just simple patriotism. Side A: 1. Joni Mitchell 's early influence on her peers is part of the mythos of her era, and their support a major factor in her future success; it's telling that David Crosby, Fairport Convention, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Buffy St. Marie, and Judy Collins all thought enough of Joni's songwriting to cover her work long before she won the Grammy for Best Folk Performance in 1970 - or indeed, in many cases, before she had a chance to record those songs herself. But though Joni Mitchell's emergence is often lumped in with the transformation of [...]
The Americana Music Honors and Awards show is this Thursday night in Nashville at the historic Ryman Auditorium. I have gone through most of the nominees and honorees at this year's event in this space over the last month or so. As we lead up to the event this week, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the previous winners. Today... song of the year. 2002: Jim Lauderdale & Ralph Stanley: She's Looking at Me [...]
We're in an indiefolk mood today, thanks to an increasingly large pile of new material flowing in from fan recommendations, the labels, and the blogosphere at large. As such, there's nothing particularly rare here today, just a bunch of great web-scavenged covers, most of which had their coming out party long after we originally featured the songwriters that first made them famous -- making them a perfect fit for yet another long-awaited edition of our longstanding (Re)Covered series here on Cover Lay Down. At [...]
Darrell Scott: Long Ride Home
There's a drunken fight, a couple grappling in the back seat of a car and other typical Saturday night scenes found outside a bar, but the lyrics give the participants a sense of dignity. Darrell Scott enjoys a reputation as one of country music's most talent guitar and steel players, so it was no surprise when Led Zep's Robert Plant asked Scott to join Plant's Band of Joy. Scott's backed up such talents as Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris and Patty Loveless on their recordings. But Scott is also a wonderful songwriter, which is evident here on his seventh studio [...]
Q&A: Darrell Scott Talks Robert Plant, What Americana Means and More
While the demo tape-carrying waiters and baristas of Nashville fantasize about hitting it big as a session player, songwriter or performer, Darrell Scott has been a key figure in each of those re... Continue reading "Q&A: Darrell Scott Talks Robert Plant, What Americana Means and More" >

Robert Plant & Band Of Joy: Tour Dates
Earlier this fall Robert Plant released his latest foray into the world of roots-rock with Band Of Joy via Round Records. The album, named in honor of the experimental blues band he played in with John Bonham prior to forming Led Zeppelin, features Plant backed by an impressive band of top-notch roots musicians including Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Darrell Scott, Byron House and Marco Giovino. Plant & Co., who played a brief summer tour, have confirmed that they will [...]

Pullin' 'Tubes: Plant Dances With Angels
Despite being known as the front man for Godfathers of Hard Rock Led Zeppelin, in recent years Robert Plant has shown his affinity towards the subtle sounds of folk, bluegrass and Americana. In 2007, Plant achieved unexpected runaway success with the release of Raising Sand, his unconventional pairing with Alison Krauss, which netted the pair a slew of Grammys including Album Of The Year. While the duo are rumored to be plotting a follow up, Plant has decided to go all the way back to his pre-Zep days for the inspiration for his [...]

New Robert Plant solo album coming soon
2010 is a busy year for surviving Led Zeppelin members. Guitarist Jimmy Page will be taking new material on tour , bassist John Paul Jones is playing big festivals and performing on TV with Them Crooked Vultures, and, as we have just learned, vocalist Robert Plant has announced an upcoming solo album (via Rock it Out! ). Unfortunately, a reunion still isn't happening . The followup to his 2005 solo album Mighty ReArranger and his Grammy-winning 2007 collaboration with Alison Krauss entitled Raising Sand , the new LP [...]
