Bumbershoot 2011 Day Three (September 5th, 2011 - Seattle, Washington) ** There may not be a better way to begin a day of musical carousing than by watching Charles Bradley, otherwise known as "The Screaming Eagle of Soul," and "The Black Swan," take the stage for an intimate, live KEXP performance. The Gainesville, Florida born funk-star and soul-singer is a true legend, and it's easy to see why. Draped in a royal-red, sequined blazer, and offering a reverential bow, Bradley held the audience in a state of excited bliss [...]

This mix is a combination of the original 12″ inch version by Hall and Oates with the new cover by The Bird And The Bee from 2010. Enjoy! I Cant Go For That (Cygnet Mix)
I am so sorry. I have been seriously delinquent in posting here at the blog. I wouldn't blame you if you thought I'd packed it in. I suppose I should put up some Christmas music to make up for it, shouldn't I? 'Tis the season and all that. I've actually had this non-traditional chrimbo mix made up for nearly two months. I made it for a friend who lost her sister last year right before the holiday. She told me she couldn't bear to listen to any traditional Christmas music this [...]
If it's December at You Ain't No Picasso then it's time for Mixmas. Every year I use the holiday season as an excuse to get some of my favorite musicians to contribute a mix centered around a theme of their choosing. They share some of their favorites and we get a little peak into their [...]

This is a megamix which has been brewing in my head ever since I first had the idea for it back in 1986. It is a challenge to even find 4 songs which have the exact same 89 BPM tempo in a 2-2 shuffle time signature ... that is, the same shuffle beat which is used in Hall and Oates' "Maneater", probably the best known of these four tracks. Yet, here it is, in all it's glory! The mix opens up with "Bad Boy" from Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine. [...]
I'm going to use this space from time to time to re-run some of my favorite mp3blog writing from the past six or seven years. There are, of course, about as many mp3blogs now as there are people with internet connections (exaggeration), but back in the crazy fucking days of the early 2000s, there were only, say, 400,000,000 mp3blogs that were essential reading, and of those, there were only about a dozen whose authors wrote with style, energy, and coherence. [Here's pt. 1 and pt. 2 , in case you missed them] [...]

I recently dug up my old copy of 1980's Voices by Daryl Hall and John Oates , sandwiched deep in the nether region of my record collection next to the E.T. soundtrack and some creepy, bizarro Pacman record . It was a birthday gift ... I think I got it the same year man discovered fire. I'd guess it's the first time I've listened to that record in 25 years-and damnit if it doesn't hold up. A little doo wop, some new wave, lotsa pop, not to mention [...]

Ok folks here's the last episode in our Christmas Party series, the Xmas eve edition, where we post some of the hill's favorite holiday songs - Canadian and otherwise. Christmas In Hollis, Boney M, Hall & Oates, a live Jenn Grant and Daniel Ledwell duet, and a new old favorite from our home province's favorite cowboy: Hank Snow. Hope you enjoy them. And we also hope you all have a fantastic Christmas or whatever holiday you'll be celebrating over the next few days. Things might be slow around the hill as we get into holiday/family [...]
da assaporare con: Hall & Oates - 09 I Can't Go for That (No Can Do) (1981)

I've been doing this as a live blend for years, and for some reason it never occurred to me to magic up an edit so I don't have to spend so much energy (gasp!) mixing this thing up every time. Big Up to MSPaint. Daryl Hall & John Oates - I Can't Go For That (DJ Apt One Drum Edit) Zshare | YSI | 320 kbps

Just a reminder for all you bad little kiddies doing bad little things , Time Festival happens tonight. Doors open at 8pm. I'm flippin ' excited to see Jeff Mills on the decks, Dj Mehdi ease Ed Banger goodness into my ear drums, Felix Cartal show the masses what he's about, San Francisco flare from Mark Farina's funk, and if there's time, why Crystal Castles makes people cream. Here's to hoping Crystal Castles drops some new material. Hall & Oates - Private Eye [...]

Well now, it's Christmas Eve, I find myself with a spare few minutes, so I thought I'd leave you fine folks with a couple musical treats before signing off for the year. The first is a version of Baby It's Cold Outside done by two of the Hill's favorite Halifax (by way of PEI) singer-songwriters, Jenn Grant and Daniel Ledwell. It's from Grant's performance during last year's In The Dead of Winter Festival, and it's really rather fun (coincidently, you can find the schedule for IDOW 09 right here if you're interested). Why [...]

Mike Rogers in Tokyo's Record Reviews Hey... I've been here for 25 years... Nothing here seems strange to me anymore. It's hard to write about that sort of stuff. I've begun to think that Japan is normal and the west is all fucked up. I work at a shitty radio station. I know that might seem redundant as all radio stations are shitty, but the station I work at is particularly shitty. You know, you have shit, shitty, shittiest, and shitterer. [...]

I'm flying west to Nanaimo for a family vacation so I thought I'd leave you with some Hall & Oates 12" Extended Mixes. I think it's good flying music. I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) (Extended Club Mix) Kiss On My List (Unreleased Dance Mix) Say It Isn't So (Special Extended Dance Mix) Family Man (Extended Dance Mix) Maneater (Extended Club [...]

Ray Charles: Come Rain or Come Shine Doris Troy: Just One Look The Sweet Inspirations: A Brand New Lover, Part 1 Howard Tate: She's a Burgler Daryl Hall and John Oates: She's Gone All from Atlantic Soul (Rhino Handmade, 2007) When I first saw this boxset, my initial thought was, "isn't 'Atlantic Soul' redundant"? It's just that I've always associated Atlantic with soul and certainly, [...]
Below you will find mix number three out of five that you can expect to see in the next few days as a result of EAR FARM's Thanksgiving Mix Contest . The theme for this mix was decided upon by Matt (not me). As he put it: "as a sax player, I'd love to hear your favorite tracks that feature sax and/or horns". Perfect. But, as a one-time saxophone player myself, I was inclined to limit the below mix to songs where the sax really stands out. Not horns, SAX. [...]
