Portraits - "D (Edit)" Portraits is a new Bay Area "supergroup" of likeminded drone, ambient, and noise artists, rounding up the talents of Jefre Cantu-Ledesma ( Root Strata , Tarentel ), Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras ( Barn Owl ), Gregg Kowalsky and Marielle Jakobsons ( Date Palms ), Maxwell Croy ( EN ) and others in one unstoppable ensemble. For their self-titled debut on Important , the collective channels its powers into two [...]

Happy Russian Wilds Day! That's right our own San Francisco Peninsula psychedelic rock outfit Howlin Rain has released their bluesy and directionless fifth album to the masses. I say directionless because if you listen to Phantom In The Valley , you'll find enough genres to keep you listening on repeat. Singer Ethan Miller rages with mystical power and lifting soulfulness as the band is shaken alive with razor sharp and ramblin' sonic venom and dead-on jazz-like surgery. Russian Wilds is sweet harmonies and dynamite wailing pulled from a fragile web into a adamantium-strong [...]
The Bold Italic linked recently to these videos of Barn Owl and Date Palms performing at the TBI/ San Francisco Zen Center event, "Meditations on San Francisco." The clips, shot by Christopher Musgrave , are both really great. The Date Palms one adds a hallucinatory visual layer to the mix, but both videos offer some ear-pleasing drones. Barn Owl is currently touring Europe - see all of their upcoming shows here . [...]
The San Francisco Zen Center isn't a place I'd normally expect to see a rock show, but the Center's upcoming "Meditations on San Francisco" event on October 8th (6pm, $12), co-presented with The Bold Italic , is set to feature performances by local drone-rockers Barn Owl , Date Palms , and Danny Paul Grody . Visual artist David Wilson will also be in attendance, showcasing "an interactive installation, which will allow guests to engage in a creative group activity, forming [...]

Date Palms - Honey Devash Oh, the sweet, sticky meditations. What is it about music like this that hits me to the core? Virbrational frequencies of only the deepest sunlight and mystical ocean waves. Going deep here. Get the full version of this blazed out track on the A-side of their upcoming Honey Davish LP release on Mexican Summer next week. Follow the band for news on Tumblr . Gorgeous Utah(?) desert album art by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma . Listen to more on Sndcld .

Aquarius Records , one of our favorite record stores and places to visit on Valencia street, is celebrating its 40th birthday party tonight with a show at Cafe Du Nord. he show includes Oakland based duo Date Palms , heavy metal act Dzjenghis Khan , fuzzed and extremely creative San Franciscan quartet Lumerians , our own favorite psych-pop group The Mantles , and super special guest, Best Coast . If you haven't already bought tickets, I hate to break it to you but it's currently sold out. You might be able to snag [...]

Gregg Kowalsky already has a pretty sterling reputation around these parts, putting out albums on Root Strata and Kranky in the past that teem with the haunted ambience of drone. On his new project Date Pams, the duo he's begun with Marielle Jakobsons, that same ambient specter looms large but it's also accompanied by delicate exotics and a pulse of bass that splits personalities between somber and sensual. The pair augments the skeletal template of cosmic psych with a smattering of violins, glass-tinged plucks, languorous synths and wavering drones; but still it's the all encompassing bass throb that makes the [...]
