It's that time once again... Wednesday night at 7:00 (Eastern), WDVX and wdvx.com will broadcast this month's edition of Tennessee Shines live from the Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville. This month's lineup is a pretty solid one featuring Americana stalwart Dave Alvin, former Nickel Creek fiddler Sara Watkins, Band of Horses guitarist Tyler Ramsey, and up and coming Oklahoma songwriter Samantha Crain. Obviously, the biggest name on this month's bill is Dave [...]

Alright, y'all. It's Indian summer here in paradise, and that means festivals. This week I'll be waxing rhapsodic on the sublime Hardly Strictly Bluegrass , and next week I'll preview Treasure Island Music Festival . [find all of my pictures on my Flickr ] You know you've found a home when within sixty seconds of walking (or rolling) onto the festival grounds you hear Emmylou Harris singing. Emmylou had joined her guitarist Buddy Miller onstage to sing a little backup. (Children in the audience should be aware that Emmylou is the greatest backup [...]

Is there anything lovelier than a beautifully sung folk hymn? I think not. Here is an absolutely gorgeous one off of the new album from legendary blues rocker Dave Alvin. The record is 'Dave Alvin And The Guilty Women.' Guilty Woman Christy McWilson is the one responsible for these gorgeous vocals. * 'Potters Field' MP3

Alvin kicks up new sparks with guilty women Having debuted this all-female backing lineup at San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in 2008, Dave Alvin and his estrogen-packing band have waxed a gem. Christy McWilson and Amy Farris' harmonies and duets prove compelling partners to Alvin's baritone on an album of blues, rock, folk and a few surprises. Chief among the surprises is the Cajun fiddle and pedal steel arrangement of Alvin's "Marie Marie," rendered so convincingly that it will take you a second to remember the Blasters signature original. From there [...]

The problem I have this week is plenty of great new music but not enough time to give it justice. One of the interesting new releases is a record from Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men. Dave Alvin recently lost friend and bandmate Chris Gaffney, seeing as it was too early to go on with his old band The Guilty Men he hooked up with a bunch of women instead and altered the name somewhat. I think it altered his sound a bit too. Dave Alvin once said, "There are two types of folk music: [...]
1. Dave Alvin - Fourth of July - Romeo's Escape This is one of my all-time favorite songs, but my preference is for Alvin's heartache-laced, stripped-down recording from 1994's King of California. On Romeo's Escape it's a straight-ahead rock song, similar to the John Doe sung version on X's See How We Are, also released in 1987. The soaring chorus (Hey Baby, it's the Fourth of July) and the
