Hi! Hello! How are you? Do you remember me? Do you remember this website? Do you remember a time when people visited websites that weren't owned by some social conglomerate or were simply collections of content originally posted by other websites that also posted collections of content? Do you remember accessing these websites on actual computers, instead of sentient telephones? Well, anyway, I'm here now again, and I'm really glad you are too. I started doing this show over 11 years ago, before podcasting was even a thing. It's been six months since my last show, which is [...]

I don't know if it's because of Internet information overload, or just because I'm getting older, but I'm finding it harder to get into new bands than I used to. New bands used to be my favorite part of doing my radio show, but now I look at a blog page full of new bands to check out, and I feel that same pang of pre-exhaustion I get when I see three baskets full of laundry to fold. So it's always a relief to see new music come along from artists I've loved in the past, especially if [...]

A couple weeks ago, the Olympic Flame passed by my house. I didn't even know it was going to, but all of a sudden, hundreds of people were lining the streets. Until that point, I had actually been rather cynical about the Olympics taking place in the Vancouver area. "As if there aren't five times too many people here already." When the flame passed, I started warming up to the idea. (Pun intended? Maybe.) While my Olympic Fever didn't register on the mercury until midway through the opening ceremonies, Canadians have been excited for a long time. And [...]
As I see the written words "Best of 2009," I have a gut reaction to dismiss the very idea as an oxymoron. Like when someone who would rather not be awake responds with "What's good about it?" when greeted by "Good morning." As writer Marc Kevin Hall recently observed , 2009 can be summed up by one word: loss. This was certainly true for me; I lost my job to the recession, and, worse, a longtime friend to death. The music community also suffered losses: Michael Jackson, Jeff Hanson, Vic Chestnutt to name a few. So far, [...]
This is probably the last show of new, non-seasonal music I'll be doing until after the new year. Because of that, I've included a lot of forthcoming releases. Still to come this month, we'll have Christmas music, as well as best of both 2009, and the entire decade. Just saw Where the Wild Things Are today. I think I'll have to see it again. Not because I loved it that much (though I did enjoy it), but because I think I might enjoy it more a second time. It dawned on me a couple hours later that it's almost more a dream than a story, and that I should watch it that way. Did you see it? What did you think? Here it is, the second of three hours recapping music released during this show's six month hiatus. (Ed: After recording this podcast and claiming there were only three months left to do Christmas shopping, I consulted with experts in the field of timekeeping, and was informed that the amount of time remaining is more like four months. That kind of thing isn't my strong suit.) (artist - song - album purchase link :: extra info) The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Come Saturday [...]

I took close to six months off of doing my podcast. Since then, SO MUCH good music has come out, that before I can do a show comprised of new music, I have to catch up on that period of time. This is the first of three shows recapping from February until now. If this show is pretty much your only new music source, you're in for a BIG treat, this is the best of the best. If you twitter the e-blogs, you'll know most of this, it'll be like the Greatest Hits of 2009 (thus far). Word! [...]

I hope you had a great holidays and New Year! I did. January is actually one of my favorite times of year. The weather still isn't great, but the days are starting getting longer, my body's circadian rhythms tell me to start going places, doing things, and seeing people again. Six hours of daylight makes me hibernate, and now it's time to go find some honey. Here's this week's honey: artist - song - album :: extra info Faded Paper Figures - North by North [...]
Well, better late than never. My life's been turned on its head the last few months (and not necessarily, entirely, or permanently in a bad way), but it's meant that I've been doing fewer new shows, and sometimes taking a while to post them. I'm posting this one from a few weeks ago now, and will have another brand new one up in a couple of days. Also, I'll be doing my Christmas Special next week! Good times. artist - song - album :: extra info A.C. Newman - [...]
So, just in time for Halloween, there's a compilation album about people who've died and are buried in the Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, by all Portland artists! It's called (D)early Departed , and the proceeds go to maintaining and improving an important piece of our history: a graveyard in the heart of our city, which started in the 1850's and final resting place of many of our founders, as well as some of lower estate. ( Buy it here .) artist - song - album :: extra info [...]
So, it's been a while. How are you? I've been busy, at my new digs and otherwise. But I should be back into the groove around these parts again for the forseeable future.
