A jazz supergroup of sorts made its debut at Scullers this week. The Joe Lovano/Dave Douglas quintet, calling itself Soundprints, rolled into town for sets Tuesday and last night. Advance word was... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .
Yeah, he's sharing more Dave Douglas. Learn to love it. Facing West comes from Douglas's 1998 album Charms of the Night Sky and it's a duet for trumpet and Guy Klucevsek's accordion. It's amusing music, light on its feet but with a bit of oomph and a little bit of oompah. Admit it, that doesn't really make you want to listen to it though, does it? What if I told you there are moments when it sounds just like the theme music to the old Spider-Man cartoon? [...]

JAIR TAHAH Masada Alef DIW : 1994 John Zorn, alto; Dave Douglas, trumpet; Greg Cohen, bass; Joey Baron; drums. The first salvo in what would turn out to be a tremendous creative outlet for Zorn: the Masada songbook. Here, on the occasion of the Jewish new year, are a couple of tunes from that first Masada record. Recorded at a marathon session [...]
The Hot Club de France was the home of Django Reinhardt, and 13th St was that of Louis Armstrong. What they'd have to do with this, I have no idea. Hot Club of 13th Street is a racing piece of hard bop with strewn with sonic interruptions, usually electronic, although Marc Ribot's guitar also provides some ungodly racket as well. An excellent idea. Should some dreary killjoy carp and ask of you what it all means, you should explain that it means Dave Douglas likes random sounds bubbling up through the mix. You [...]
Spark of Being live, composition workshop, upcoming mobile release. Trumpeter Dave Douglas has been taking his progressive jazz combo Keystone all around the country lately, putting on the multi-media program Spark of Being which combines some forceful Douglas originals with Bill Morriso's film of the same title. Douglas took time out of his touring schedule one afternoon to address students of the Columbus Jazz Academy, just a few floors above where the performance would take place later that evening. "Compositional Concepts" was the name...
This is pretty intense. Black Rock Park is the opening track from trumpeter Dave Douglas' 2003 album Freak In . It's a blues/jazz scream, with Douglas going all bug-eyed and desperate, and Marc Ribot adding the sort of fractured guitar shredding he does so well. Never too comfortable, never settling down, this is tendon-taut music. This is srs bsns, ppl. Dave Douglas - Black Rock Park (alternate download)

Having the great privilege of rocking out with Roy Nathanson reminded me that I really should put on music from the erstwhile downtown scene more often. There's really no substitute for top shelf improvisers busting out, even when they've got it written out. Here's trumpeter Dave Douglas and accordionist Guy Klucevsek yukkin' it up. Dave Douglas - Mugshots: Decafinata

In the summer of 1803, Capt. Merriwether Lewis, having been tasked by President Thomas Jefferson to put together an expedition to the explore the recently acquired Louisiana Territory, sent a letter to his friend, William Clark, requesting his presence to join him in making the transcontinental journey. Without hesitation Clark accepted. The rest is, as they say, history. One of Jefferson's instructions to the Captains was to keep a journal to document the flora and fauna and , whenever possible, detailed accounts of their experiences. Thankfully, both men were prodigious journal writers [...]

CRY OUT Darius Jones Trio Man'ish Boy (A Raw and Beautiful Thing) AUM Fidelity : 2009 DJ, alto sax; Cooper-Moore, piano, Rakalam Bob Moses, drums. You know what you need? Another freakin top ten list, that's what. While we don't pretend toward comprehensiveness in our listening, we thought it might be of moderate interest to D:O's abnormally well-informed and good-looking readership to know of some discs [...]

We at D:O are incredibly honored to be able to present the following guest post from composer , trumpeter , blogger , label magnate , and all-around brass advocate Dave Douglas . If you like what you read and hear here, be sure to check [...]

Dave Douglas : Trumpet Donny McCaslin : Tenor saxophone Orin Evans : Fender rhodes Clarence Penn : Drums Scott Colley : Acoustic bass Thanks to the BBC for putting out this great show from one of the most important bands of the time. WELCOME TO NINETIES WEEK! 'Il faut etre moderne.' - Rimbaud Our main goal and real joy here at D:O is digging through jazz's past and shining a light on unjustly forgotten recordings. But sometimes the past starts to feel a bit musty. And sometimes the tributes we've posted to the late greats have made us feel more like cryptkeepers than champions of a living art form. We bitch about Wynton Marsalis being a backward-looking docent, [...]
