Every week we will be featuring The Sweet Five! What's The Sweet Five you may ask? Well I'll drop you five sweet songs that you should listen to once a week, that will help you get over your mid-week slump and set sail towards the ever-nearing weekend! Ready? Okay! This week is a little different. The other night I was lying in bed when it came to me. What's the way to be ultimately lazy? I could get my girlfriend to write The Sweet Five for this week! Not entirely true, but yes this [...]
Pretty much everybody has that one local speakeasy they frequent, feel one with, feel right-at-home at. Mine's a dive called The Ghetto in Mahalaxmi, and it's been my go-to place for drinks, social stuff and serious alone-time since I was about 15-years-old, since the days of them having a DJ (#someremember). Now when I say dive, I’m saying it looks and feels like a dive bar, but their prices are more in line with say a dive in uptown Chicago. That wasn't always the case, though. Blame taxes. I also met my first girlfriend there, had my first real drunk [...]

Despite how easy it is to go online and quickly download an entire album in just a few seconds (which we are paying for, of course), there's nothing particularly special in purchasing music from the ether. Gone are the days of driving to the mall to browse through the racks of CDs at Camelot Music and Sam Goody; no longer can we fill out multiple Columbia House order forms for seemingly free albums. CDs were the last physical music objects, and our first purchases say a lot about us as much and the time in which we grew up. (For [...]

"Since when did it become cool to become part of the establishment?" This question was posed to me by a friend walking across our university alma mater's campus during the 2004 presidential election. The wash of Bush/Cheney signs from dorm room windows was simply soul crushing. However, by 2004 this wave of late teen/early twenties [...] The post The Dave Grohl Meme About The Kids appeared first on Your Music Is Awful.com .

The Internet's constant rush of new music is great. But time and time again, audiences come back to the old stuff. As of last year, catalog sales outpace new music sales . People who lived in the era of whatever that "old stuff" is seek it out for nostalgia and young people who never lived in that music's era long for a time in music history they never lived in. But how does the constant rush of quality new music get winnowed down and become “old stuff” or canon? Converting the varied ages at New Orleans Jazz & [...]

The legendary Mavis Staples returns with a new album on June 25th called One True Vine on Anti- . The album was produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, who played all the instruments on the record except for drums, which were handled by Tweedy's 17 year old son, Spencer. Stavis makes a stop in Philly at the end of May to take part in WXPN's Non-Comm music conference, and she'll be opening for Dave Matthews Band on June 28 and June 29 at the Susquehanna Bank Center. Now that we’ve all had time to recover from a week’s worth of sun damage, get our voices back, and forget about the hours spent driving through the lonely west Texas desert, it’s time to reflect upon another year of SXSW. While everyone’s experience is different under the Austin sun, these are my recollections as [...] The post SXSW Review: The Best & Worst of SXSW 2013 appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Well, for some reason Bonaroo decided to announce their lineup this year via a livestreaming video hosted by Weird Al . On top of this, two of the major headliners announced so far are Mumford and Sons and Dave Matthews Band, two notoriously hated/loved bands that are arguably past their prime. While Bonnaroo has been a consistent bright spot on the festival circuit in the past, this year's lineup is bound to be one of the most polarizing. We'll be back with updates, including official posters if they are ever released, but here are some more of [...]

Over the last handful of years musicians have turned to the power of crowd-sourcing as a means to raise additional funds to help offset the costs of recording, touring and marketing an album. You can now add Josh Rouse to the list of musicians who have successfully reached and exceeded their goal, by offering his fans a variety of perks, which included everything from a signed poster all the way up to a private house concert for those contributing to his Pledge Music campaign . On March 19 the singer-songwriter will release his tenth studio [...]
