Cheers kids. My 24-hour bug seems to have subsided. I'm sure you were all waiting on pins and needles for an update on my health, right? No? Oh. Well, in any event, here's the mix tape I should have posted last night. I hope you enjoy it. RULES for uninitiated noobs: I give birth to [...]
For some reason today I awoke two and a half hours before my alarm was set to awaken me, and could not fall back asleep. Do you have any idea how frustrating that is!? Well…actually…you probably do. I think that happens to everybody. Sorry for the momentary lapse in logic. I'm usually a bit more…with [...]
Five decades can contain a lot of history, especially in the world of folk music. Thankfully, Gene Shay has an incredible memory. With the 51st Philadelphia Folk Festival descending on Schwenksville this weekend, we sat down with Shay and a collection of photos from the Folksong Society archives to get a picture of where the ... The Grizzly Bear frontman covers a folk standard.
I've played this song by several different singers. It is one of my favorite songs though I can't explain why. This particular cover comes from the 1971 album Van Ronk.
This is from his album The Folkways Years, 1959-1961. The link to Smithsonian-Folkways is in the right side column. Drop by to check out their amazing catalogue.

Things have been going very, very well for Carey Mulligan over the past couple of years. And the good news for her is that things look like they're going to get even better. 26 year old, Mulligan , currently stars in Nic olas Winding Refn's ultra cool stunt driver flick, Drive with Ryan Gosling and has starred in a string of successful films over the past [...]
Filed under: News , Movies Douglas R. Gilbert Dave Van Ronk was a pivotal figure in the early folk explosion of the '60s in New York's Greenwich Village, and his rise to fame is precisely the kind of stuff the Coen Brothers want to write about. Rolling Stone reports that Joel and Ethan Coen's newest project, 'Inside Llewyn Davis,' will be loosely based on the life of Van Ronk. [...]
After months and months of scrolling through the muddle that is my RSS feed, I finally weeded out a bunch of blogs that I realize I'm just never interested in, and I also created a new sub-category for "trustworthy sources," which are the six or so blogs that, for me, consistently display solid taste. Now it's a lot easier for me to make sure I don't scroll past those posts that have a high chance of scratching my itch. For most of the tracks below, I've included my source; if you like what you hear, check those links for more [...]

The Hudson Dusters was a band put together by legendary folksinger Dave Van Ronk in a short-lived attempt to buy into the folk-rock craze that hit the States in the mid-sixties. Though Van Ronk was one of the founding fathers of the original Greenwich Village revival, he had never really conformed to any of the stereotypes which were so quick to develop among his contemporaries. Thus, the music which developed out his “going electric” was far more eccentric than most people's. This was no attempt to simply copycat (and thus capitalize on) Dylan's new aesthetics, this was an artist expanding [...]
This is from his 1971 album Van Ronk. I went looking for it for you but found it currently unavailable on Amazon. This was the sole song on the album arranged by Dave.

"Uncle Sam needs you, Boy I'm a gonna cut your hair off Take this rifle, Kid Gimme that gui-tar Yea-ah..." Today, on the 4th of July, when we Americans do what we do to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence (eat meat, drink beer, and blow shit up), let us pause and reflect on the glory that is "The All American Boy." In 1958, when Bobby Bare was about be inducted into the Army and [...]
The Coen Brothers have been mostly off the radar after last year's triumph with True Grit, but details are beginning to trickle out about the pair's next project. The two had said that they were doing a film about music, but offered no other information. Now the L.A. Times is reporting that the film will be based on The Mayor of MacDougal Street , a posthumously published memoir of Greenwich Village folk icon Dave Van Ronk, who died in 2002. There are few other details other than the source, but those familiar with Van Ronk's [...]

In a Q&A with Noah Baumbach earlier this month, Joel and Ethan Coen revealed that they’ve been working on a new script for a music-related film featuring songs “pretty much all performed live” on a “single instrument.” The pair kept further details a bit cryptic in that discussion, but now the L.A. Times have been tipped off with an intriguing update on the project: The Mayor of MacDougal Street , a posthumously published memoir by legendary folk singer Dave Van Ronk that revisits the historic 1960s Greenwich Village scene he helped [...]

Happy Super Bowl Sunday, you super people! I hope your team won, if you're a sports guy who likes a certain sports team. Otherwise, as we say in New York (about the Mets) better luck next year!
