"Captain Awesome, Need Awesome Intro to Jazz 101!"

"Captain Awesome, Need Awesome Intro to Jazz 101!" Dear Captain Awesome, I'm writing you this email because my ears are exhausted from listening to new age music and I would like you to help me discover new genres of music (Well, new for me and I suppose, old for the world). As a child I've been exposed to Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong and I've been singing standard songs like 'Funny Valentine' and 'Summertime' ever since I could remember, but I haven't really taken the time to make jazz music my own. Actually, I haven't even taken the time to acquaint myself with [...]

The Dave Brubeck Quartet: Their Last Time Out

Dave Brubeck - Take The 'A' Train - 1966
Coming from one of the most consistent quartets in jazz, this final show is typically excellent, which is why it still manages to surprise you. With Dave Brubeck, it's all about the timing, and not just the strange tempos he played with in his music. 1967 was the year that saw us lose John Coltrane, and though Miles Davis was at the height of his powers with his second great quintet, their run would end shortly after '67 and Davis would wander away from jazz into fusion. It was a time when jazz as we knew it was in [...]

I think you'll recognize this song, but will you recognize the name of the artist? The man behind this Dave Brubeck cover is of course King Tubby, who is, in my opinion at least, criminally under-recognized. I'd consider his [...]

TO Jazz Review: Dave Brubeck Quartet, June 24, Koerner Hall

TO Jazz Review: Dave Brubeck Quartet, June 24, Koerner Hall Toronto - Dave Brubeck would probably appreciate a review of one of his shows that doesn't reference his age. Last night was the second time I've seen Brubeck and his quartet in concert, and both shows easily rank among the best jazz performances I've ever seen. The man is a master behind the piano keys, his solos are breathtaking, his absurdly long fingers just fly across his piano when he picks up the pace and are equally deft during his somber mood pieces. I can't even explain what he and his quartet do with time signatures. It's over my head. [...]

Blue Note Jazz Fest continues -- Brian Wilson, Dave Brubeck, Bootsy Collins, The Roots, Roberta Flack, Estelle & more

Chaka Khan (Ain't Nobody) rare 80's performance
Brian Wilson played the Highline Ballroom [Sunday] night as part of its sister club's month-long Blue Note Jazz Festival , and though the two-set show featured his entire current Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin album of Gershwin standards, it wasn't jazz, really, but no less demanding--and rewarding. The Beach Boys' beloved creative genius brought a 12-piece band of multi-instrumentalists/vocalis ts--and a local female string section--and all lived up to his contention that it's one of his best bands ever. The Gershwin album, which was conceived under the aegis of his hero George [...]

Brubeck's Signature: Signed with Time

By Kristen Bialik "I thought jazz was much too tame." -Dave Brubeck, 1961 Brubeck challenged jazz to take rhythmic risks and harmonic adventures. He reinvented the genre based on his signature style featuring polyrhythms, odd time signatures, and polytonality. It's difficult to say whether Brubeck was predicting an inevitable evolution or whether the future of jazz evolved because of his innovations, but one thing Dave Brubeck could not possibly have predicted is the extent he would be long intertwined with jazz's future. [...]

In Memoriam – March 2011

In Memoriam – March 2011 The Grim Reaper must be in need of a holiday after his brutally busy month. In fact, we're still finding his victims from last month. For example, the 20 February death of doo wop singer Willie Davis was announced only last week. Among this month's dead are Carl Bunch, a drummer who toured with Buddy Holly & the Crickets in early 1959. He was in hospital due to frostbite sustained on the unheated tourbus which Buddy, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper tried to rescape by taking the flight that killed them. [...]

Friday Mix Tape: Songs Written in 5/4

Friday Mix Tape: Songs Written in 5/4 Friday Mix Tape is supposed to be in general a shorter piece that doesn't require too much "thinking", but we're going to see if we can rhythmically stretch your mind a little bit today. Rather than get into the history of odd time signatures and writing tunes in 5, I am going to point you in the direction of this NPR piece titled Playing Five Beats To The Measure . A very well-written brief explanation of the history and many examples. Now count with me: One. Two. Three. Four. Five. [...]
