Never a critical darling, David Bazan has already tweeted some of the negative reaction to his newest album; I haven't heard the entire release, but based on the single that he made available at the end of last week, I can't possibly agree with the reactions I've read. It's certainly not deserving of the "truly...
We here at ATH love us some David Bazan so we tend to pay attention when the man drops new music our way. This new track called "Wolves at the Door" is the opening number to Bazan's latest album Strange Negotiations due out May 24th on Barsuk . It really is a great pop song that highlights one of the most underrated songwriters in the indie game. The guy's good. Download: David Bazan - Wolves At The Door [MP3]

Last month David Bazan stopped in at my house on a quiet weeknight, during his tour of shows in people's living rooms and gathering spaces. The former frontman for Pedro The Lion showed up sniffly in a red hooded sweatshirt, carrying his guitar case to my front step. I offered him some Gypsy Cold Care tea and we sat to chat as the (largely 20-something male) crowd began to make their way up the walk, assorted microbrews in hand. After the very first house show [...]
From his sophomore solo effort, Strange Negotiations , set for release on May 24, comes "Wolves at the Door," streaming above (click the arrow for a free MP3) pre - order

New David Bazan - "Wolves at the Door" Last fall, ex-Pedro the Lion leader David Bazan asked fans for help completing his sophomore solo effort, Strange Negotiations , by requesting donations to offset costs that might delay the release in exchange for a shout-out in the album liner notes and an "I Helped Bazan Make A Record" shirt. Now the 10-track LP is in the can, set for release on May 24, and ready to preview via "Wolves at the Door," a promising allegorical ode to financial crises, love, [...]
Northern Virginia's Filene Center at Wolf Trap With the majority of the Mason-Dixon Line above us, DC can and should be lumped with other large Southern metropolises. We know it's getting to be summer when the Republicans start breaking out their seersucker. As almost a two year resident of Washington, the heat of summer has become something I both long for and fear. Luckily, artists and concert promoters have put together a stacked summer schedule to get you through these sticky months. As always, after the jump are all the upcoming announced shows in [...]

[FORWARD »] David Bazan - Strange Negotiations Release Date: May 24, 2011 Label: Barsuk
Welcome to opening day of the Rounders softball season! Unrelated to that, here's a bunch of songs. Unrelated to any of these songs, I just caught the leak of Okkervil River 's Wake and Be Fine ... excellent, I think, it's definitely a throwback to his Black Sheep Boy or even earlier days, and I believe that learning the lyrics to these new songs will add to their glory. I'm very excited to keep listening, which is a good thing. But anyway, back to the songs... (and go Rounders!) [...]

I believe I ended up on the Bandito Design Co . website by way of their striking David Bazan Living Room Tour Poster (above). I must have seen it on the blogs or facebook somewhere. Bandito Design Co. is a design collective based out of Columbus Ohio and is made up of professional designers from multiple creative fields who wanted a healthy "side project". They love what they do so they do what they love often. Not only do they produce creative gig posters, there's a great collection of art prints and t-shirts in their [...]

New Wax Seattle's David Bazan is set to release Strange Negotiations via Barsuk on May 24th. Bazan took a cue from Kickstarter.com and took donations from fans to help fund the recording of the album. The now-completed and set-for-release album follows up 2009's Curse Your Branches , an unflinchingly introspective collection of songs centering around Bazan's struggles with Christianity. While Strange Negotiations plays like an extension to its predecessor, albeit with a more overreaching thematic arc, it hearkens back sonically to Bazan's days [...]

photo: Chadwick Gantes I went to the Dave Bazan house show at Habitat House last night, so this is where things get heavy. There's a density in a week like this, over exhaustion mixed with over stimulation is this hazy formula that makes me eyelids heavier and my speech a little slower. I'm headed to San Francisco right now where I'll meet my boyfriend and some good friends but I wanted to remember last night, and give it due consideration in the absense of any photo or video at my disposal. [...]

David Bazan - Wolves at the Door (KUT Radio Recording) I've been sick. I wake up in the middle of the night coughing and hitting my chest to spit out the mucus clogging my throat. At night, when I lie down, I think it's very possible I won't wake up. It's ok, I'm not too bummed out by the idea of dying; I feel miserable enough not to care too much. I almost died later this afternoon too. Walking to get a late diner (personal rule: put on clothes and leave [...]
Our friend, Eau Claire's S. Carey, is touring with our namesake, indie-rock icon Dave Bazan, at the end of June! They aren't anywhere near here, but the dates and venues are set. We also reveal some little-known and oft-pondered PeerValidated history.
Are you an art bitch? Please don't take offense. It's a title to a Cansei de Ser Sexy song. If you wear your art bitchiness with pride, you're not alone -- the members of CSS are art bitches, t... Continue reading "What's Poppin' Off: Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS), David Bazan, Fleet Foxes, more" >

There are precious few no-bullshit performers out there, but David Bazan is one of 'em - in his lyrics, interviews, and between-song Q&A sessions you'll get nothing but the unvarnished truth from the guy, truths I just happen to mostly agree with. Reviewers who have been following him since his Pedro The Lion days like to focus on his longtime struggle with (and eventual shunning of) a religious upbringing, but his songs deal with so much more - personal and romantic relationships, fatherhood, the music industry, and more recently the (sorry) cultural and political state this [...]
