Summertime, and the living is easy. The fish are jumping, and the cotton... well, you get the idea. Summer officially arrives this week, bringing with it afternoons in the park and rooftop parties and beaches. The thing is, though, every summer needs a soundtrack, and while every year there seems to be a rush to anoint a certain tune The Song of the Summer™, Flavorwire decided to go one better and choose a quintessential summer album for every one of the past 50 years, as something of a sequel to last month's list of the 50 albums you need [...]

This Week in Music rounds up the latest news, releases and concerts coming to Toronto. IN THE NEWS Riot Fest brings stacked lineup to Fort York Toronto's stacked summer music festival schedule continues to grow with perhaps one of the biggest announcements of the year. After a successful event in the city last summer, Riot Fest will take over Fort York on August 24-25. The first night will see performances from bands such as [...]
The Internet loves nothing more than cats, but it’s rare that we look beyond the cute photos and memes to more seriously consider their place in our world. Flavorwire’s Highbrow Cat Week is an attempt to remedy that, with a series of pieces devoted to analyzing their impact on the cultural realm. Throughout this week we've been analyzing the place of cats in popular culture, and why they're such an ongoing obsession for the Internet, along with various other fairly cerebral cat-related topics. But shit, it's Friday, so perhaps it's time to get a [...]

The former STP singer put on quite a performance — to the disappointment of many

David Bowie.
Adrian Belew's recent exit from Nine Inch Nails has allowed him to return to a solo experiment that's been years in the making: The appropriately named FLUX, an ever-changing interactive musical experience that taps into the long-time King Crimson guitarist's adventuresome muse. "FLUX is music that is never the same twice," Belew exclusively tells Something Else!, in his first in-depth [...]

It's no secret that Queen' s Freddie Mercury was rock 'n' roll's greatest vocalist. There's also no denying the enigma of Davie Bowie . These are known facts. Still, this knowledge doesn't make their power any less magical. Take, for example, their vocal tracks for their dynamite 1981 duet, "Under Pressure". As Open Culture points out, the anthem's birth wasn't an easy process. Tensions ran high recording the single, which took place over a 24-hour wine and cocaine-fueled recording session. In 2008, Queen guitarist Brian May discussed the collaboration, [...]

When my commentary on the lyrics of The Police's "Roxanne" in my previous post surprised a friend of mine -- she'd never even considered that Roxanne might have such a questionable night job -- it got me thinking: How much do we actually know about the songs we love? Sometimes we miss their meanings completely, either intentionally or unintentionally flubbing the lyrics (I still insist that the line in Lauryn Hill's "Lost Ones" should be "Hypocrites always want to play in quicksand"), assuming they're about something they're not, or ignoring them completely. Which brings us to these 10 possibly misunderstood [...]

Over the weekend, Stone Temple Pilots performed at MusiCares' annual benefit concert in Los Angeles. Adding insult to injury for Scott Weiland, not only was STP fronted by new singer Chester Bennington , but Slash and Duff McKagan also sat in for a performance of David Bowie's "All The Young Dudes". Slash and McKagan were of course members of Velvet Revolver , another band Weiland was unceremoniously fired from. Scott, your reaction, please?

So I want to focus a little more on these Alternative Album Grammy Winners that I'm playing for bonus songs on the Countdown. So I think, on the first Monday of every month, I'm going to do a little retrospective poll related to the album from the proceeding month. May's album was Radiohead's Ok Computer. Please answer the following questions in the comments section. (If you don't have an answer, feel free to skip the question) 1. What is your favorite track on Ok Computer? [...]
The celestial tones of “Emerald and Lime," the opening track on Brian Eno's Small Craft on a Milk Sea, would fit snugly on Music for Films or Another Green World. It feels like familiar ground, but a closer listen reveals that ground is made of shifting sands. While the best moments on Small Craft echo Eno's back catalog in beautiful [...]
